Welcome Message from the Conference Chair
To celebrate the 40th anniversary of Korean-American Scientists and Engineers (KSEA), together with Korea Federation of Science and Technology Societies (KOFST) and Korea-US Science Cooperation Center (KUSCO), join us with your family and friends at the 13th US-Korea Conference on Science, Engineering and Entrepreneurship (UKC 2011) at the Canyons Resort in Park City, Utah, August 10-14, 2011. As we have reached the milestone of 40 years, the theme of UKC 2011 is the US-Korea Summit on Science and Engineering that showcases a culmination of successful US-Korea cooperative research efforts in all areas of science and engineering. Over a decade, the UKC has been a unique forum where prominent scientists, engineers, and policy makers come together to explore collaborative R&D opportunities between two great countries. Given a rapidly increasing level of cooperation between the US and Korea, the UKC 2011 is a great platform where innovative ideas across the Pacific will be openly exchanged and shared among participants for a new synergistic discovery. Over 1,000 people attended UKC 2011 from the US and Korea. UKC 2011 presents 18 broadly defined interdisciplinary sessions to discuss a new knowledge created at the interface of disciplines. All participants will be able to interact with colleagues in their specific disciplines ranging from Physics (A) to Industrial Engineering (M). Enprepreneurs can attend the KIAT industry forum to meet representatives from 21 companies from Korea. Many participants attended policy and business related forums such as national research policy, national research laboratories, intellectual properties, and KETEP energy forum. Dignitaries and distinguished speakers include Dr. Ju-Ho Lee, Minister of Education, Science and Technology of Korea, Prof. Mario Capecchi of University of Utah, 2007 Nobel Laureate in Medicine, Dr. Dae-Whan Chang, Chairman of MK newspaper and mbn TV, Mr. Philip Coyle, Associate Director of the White House OSTP, Prof. Sung Wan Kim of University of Utah, member of Institute of Medicine and National Academy of Engineering, Mr. Peter Appel, Administrator of RITA of USDOT, Prof. John Kim of UCLA, member of National Academy of Engineering, Mr. Robert Stoll, Commissioner for Patents of USPTO, Prof. Philip Kim of Columbia University, Prof. Sylvester "Jim" Gates of University of Maryland, member of PCAST, Dr. Sang-Kee Suh, Dr. Eun-Hee Bae and Dr. Young-ah Park, members of Congress for the National Assembly of Korea. I would like to record my indebtedness to President Sang-Dai Park of KOFST, Program Chairs, Steering Committee, Advisory Committee, Program Committee, Website Committee and Local Committee who guided me to the success of this conference. Finally, I would like to thank participants who convened in Park City, Utah to share their knowledge and experiences in science and engineering. I would like to give my sincere appreciation to the 70 sponsors and, without their support; this conference would not have been possible. A new era for KSEA has just begun! Let’s learn about cutting-edge technologies, renew bonding with your colleagues, make new friends, and, together with your family and friends, enjoy Utah’s stunning nature. When we depart, I would like to hear you say, “I had a blast!”
Hosin “David” Lee, Professor, Univ. of Iowa: Chair of UKC 2011 and President of KSEA

Welcome Message from the Conference Co-Chair
Dear President Lee, Hosin of the Korean-American Scientists and Engineers Association (KSEA), Distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen! It is my honor and pleasure to address the members of the Korean American science community at this significant US-Korea Conference on Science, Technology, and Entrepreneurship 2011. On behalf of the Korean Federation of Science and Technology Societies (KOFST), and as the co-chairperson of the UKC-2011 Conference, I express my sincere gratitude to all distinguished guests and participants who have graciously come to share your expertise and knowledge of science and technology. My fellow Korean Scientists and Engineers! This year marks the 40th anniversary of the KSEA. Founded in 1971 in Vienna, Virginia as the first official community of ethnic Korean scientists and engineers, the association has grown into a successful alliance. I applaud ethnic Korean residents, scientists and engineers for your hard work and perseverance. The success is yours, and you most certainly deserve the recognition and appreciation. The KSEA has made big contributions to the prosperity of the Korean-American society and the development of the science alliance between Korea and the USA. Significant events were held including the math competition for second generation Korean-Americans, scholarship opportunities for outstanding students, and local conferences, inspiring bright individuals and fortifying valuable relationships. Fellow Korean scientists and engineers! One of the important missions of the KOFST is to take a pivotal role in converging Korean's scientific intelligence and skills scattered all around the world. Today's conference, UKC-2011, held under the title of “US-Korea Summit on Science and Engineering" will allow an invaluable opportunity to promote the development of present and future scientific technologies, share information on current issues, and discuss ways of increased cooperation and exchange. In particular, heightened competitiveness of Korean science and technology has led to both quantitative and qualitative development in the UKC conference, calling for increased bilateral exchange and cooperation between the two parties. As the co-host of the UKC 2011, the KOFST will make its utmost efforts for further development in science and technology and for enhanced cooperation among the relevant parties. The festival for Korean and American scientists and engineers has now officially begun. The UKC 2011 is a momentous event, where Korean-American scientists and engineers with great capabilities gather and share their ideas and expertise. I sincerely hope that all distinguished guests and participants will have a memorable time at this conference. Let me conclude by thanking President Hosin Lee and members and staffs of the Korean-American Scientists and Engineers Association, for their dedication and hard work in organizing this event. To all the guests and participants, I wish you all a successful and rewarding conference. Thank you.
Sang-Dai Park, President, The Korean Federation of Science and Technology Societies

Welcome Message from the Conference Program Co-Chairs
Mun Y. Choi Tae Won Noh Joon Sik Lee Program Chair Program Co-Chair Program Co-Chair Univ. of Connecticut Seoul National University Seoul National University On behalf of the Technical Program Committee, we welcome you to beautiful Canyon Resorts. We are very excited to present the technical program for UKC 2011. In keeping with the tradition of collaboration, we sought advice and guidance from the scientific and engineering communities to identify the key themes of UKC 2011. As a result, the technical program for UKC 2011 was developed with significant input from members of KSEA and industry & government partners from US and Korea. This year, the technical program was arranged into three categories of 17 invited sessions, 13 technical discipline podium sessions and a combined poster session for the various technical disciplines.
• For the invited sessions, 80 leading experts were selected to present in three primary areas that define the innovative breakthroughs for the 21st Century in Science, Engineering and Health. The presentations will range in themes from bio-inspired robotics systems to carbon capture technologies to personalized genetic medicine. The contributions by the invited session chairs in developing the program and inviting the speakers are greatly appreciated.
• For the podium sessions in the 13 technical disciplines, 75 presentations were selected by the TG Councilors to reflect the important foundational and translational research.
• Due to the extensive number of high-quality submission that could not be accommodated for podium presentations, the poster session was expanded to include 150 presentations.
Please take every opportunity to imagine and explore during the next four days. It is our hope that the discussions at UKC 2011 will stimulate ideas that will lead to collaborations with colleagues and help inspire a new generation of scientists and engineers. We also want to acknowledge the tremendous guidance and support from President, Professor Hosin “David” Lee (U. Iowa), Professor Byungkyu “Brian” Park (U. Virginia), Dr. Benjamin Lee (Invia), and Professor Seri Park (Villanova U.) in developing and implementing the vision for the technical program.
