Łukasz runs “ The Center” - art institution that is situ- ated in the allotment garden facilities in Szczecin. The institution’s capital consists of 66 gold bars made of cardboard. Every person that works on behalf of “The Center” - doing a lecture or creating an artpiece in the institution - is given in exchange one gold bar. The capital was placed on view in Neues Museum and Bode Museum in Berlin, for the duration of the exhi-bition “Common Affairs”(Deutsche Bank Kunsthalle, July - September 2016), in order to boost the value of this artificial gold. The installation presented at the DB Kunsthalle consisted of a video that documents the process of bringing the golden bars to the Muse-ums by the “Spirit of Conceptual Artist”, and parts of the construction that was used for the filming process, along with the costume of the Spirit.

“Mirage (The Film)” is an adaptation of a book, created by Sebastian Cichocki and Łukasz Jastrubczak in 2012. Two years after the book was published, a journey to the United States was realized, in order to inves-tigate material gathered while working on the book (that mostly involved fictious American conceptual art practices). On the road across the country, 35 people were asked to read parts of the text taken from the book. Accidentaly acquainted persons became actors of the film, performing in a real context of american landscape.

Operating the Sun

2014performance in Kraków-Nowa Huta

Łukasz (dressed as a ghost of conceptual artist) was playing on a flute in the centre of Nowa Huta in Kraków. There was an orange circle attached to his foot; it floated in the sky, maintained by he-lium filled balloons. Pitch of the tone played on the flute depended on the height of the floating circle. If the circle was close to the ground, the pitch was low, if the circle stretched the string to the maximum, the pitch was at its highest.

2014slides projection109 slides

Series of 109 slides entitled “Frames” is a reconstruc-tion of selected frames from scenes of the Alfred Hitch-cock’s film “Vertigo”. Both locations and cropping are consistent with the original. What differs the slides from the film frames is the absence of actors. “Frames” series is also a photographic report of Łukasz’s touristic trip to San Francisco. Slides are presented in a carou-sel projector whose design replicates the vortex theme from “Vertigo”.

The work refers to Joseph Kosuth’s “Square Clear Glass Leaning” from 1965. Jastrubczak evokes the relation-ship between the art of the 60s (particularly that which postulated to move away from the materiality of art-works) and the resignation from the gold standard by the American government.

Perspective of Failure

201316 mm4’28’’

ed. 3 + AP

“Perspective of Failure” is a film that was made specially for the Deutsche Bank “Views” contest and was the sec-ond film among those that were shown at the exhibi-tion. It is a hypnotic vision, full of mysterious symbols, of a conceptual artist being killed in Florence - the cap-ital of the Italian Renaissance. “Perspective of Failure” entwines the most important themes of Jastrubczak’s work: investigations, travel, art history, geometry and per-ception disorders. The film was realized in two historic sites: near the Basilica of San Miniato al Monte (known from the legend of St. Menas, who after his martyrdom wandered with his own severed head. It also appeared in the film “Obsession” by Brian de Palma in 1976, inspired by Hitchcock’s “Vertigo”) and the Palace Vecchio (where Leonardo da Vinci’s failed frescoes were found underneath the layers of paint).

201316 mm4’06’’

ed. 3 + AP

“In Search of Miraculous” is a film made in Kraków on the banks of the Vistula River. The slow motion camera captures typical phenomenon of this tourist town: a spirit, a walking mulch, a knight or the Wawel Dragon. The film was shown during the final of the most important Polish art competition - Deutsche Bank “Views” which Łukasz won in 2013.

Golden perspective

On a cardboard painted with golden spray Łukasz set a classical perspective. Using a scalpel he formed the lines converging towards the center. In an ideal world the half lines would aim to the infinity, never crossing eachother. In fact, the lines intersect and form a textural structure in the center.

Łukasz Jastrubczak

The material for this publication was collected between December 2011 and February 2012. It consists of email correspondence between Łukasz Jastrubczak and Sebastian Cichocki, in the form of a game or “duel” of image and text. Jastrubczak’s photographs arose during the artist’s journey around the United States, and Cichocki’s textual responses (treated as “curatorial guides and references”) were written in Poland and based, in part, on earlier essays by Robert Smithson. In response to photographs sent by email, texts arose that were guides for the taking of subsequent photos, and so on. The authors had 24 hours to respond.

Sleeping Cowboy

2011sculptureconcrete, black pigment183 x 40 x 30 cm

ed. 3

In May 2011 the sculpture depicting a sleeping cow-boy was made with black plastecine. A month later, it was laid down in a wooden crate and sent to the US by ship. On July 4th it was delivered to New York. It was a bit damaged. On July 9th it was transport-ed to the airport and sent back to Poland. This time, it shrunk while beating against the walls of the crate during the flight. The purposely deformed plasticine model was then cast in concrete in edition of 3. Perma-nently one of the cowboys sleeps on a railway station in Tarnów- Mościce.

Sculpture “Movement No. 4” is made of a black rod 183 cm long. The shape of the sculpture reflects the route of the main character of the film “Vertigo”, by Alfred Hitchcock, while driving a car through the streets of San Francisco. The sculpture was left in the desert in the south-western United States.

photo from ebay auction

Łukasz bought on ebay a mysterious picture in a frame. When he received the package, it turned out that what he considered to be a framed photo-graph were in fact legs from the table on which the seller rested a blank frame with passe partout. There was no photography. To fix this unpleasant surprise (expectations vs. reality) Jastrubczak com-pleted an empty frame with what was supposed to be this mysterious photograph (cropping it from the picture from ebay).

Animation

2010installationblack trampoline, 9 photographs (various dimentions), adhesive tape

Cinema inherently locks the viewer, as it gives him the illusion of movement. “Animation” is a work that reverses the generally accepted truth. In order to watch a short animation we have to jump on the trampo-line. Individual frames of the film are glued to the wall. Łukasz used the most popular image formats (pass-port, visa, diploma, 9x13, 10x15, 13x18, 15x21, 20x30, 25x38). Along with a reduction in size the fig-ure recedes away, and we ourselves become the screen for the projection of our own.

The figure dressed in black took a route along a quarter of New York streets. At the same time, a black car from 1966 circulated a route that was a mirror image of the first one. Both elements met every three minutes in the same exact location. This recurrent pattern took place about 20 times, exerting on the random viewers a sense of deja vu.

Imitating the credits and their movement Łukasz, during an action in Mysłowice, released a caption “The End” into the sky. Letters made of cardboard attached to the balloons with hellium, soared high and disappeared.

All “Songs About Triangles” made by Łukasz, are presented as a video installation. The sound of each composition overlaps. Each new song is longer than the previous one, so all compositions, when looped, never repeat the same configuration of sounds.

Rapid Vienna vs. Rapid Vienna

2008videoDVD6’19’’

ed. 5

Łukasz filmed a match of Rapid Vienna players playing against themselves. It was all controlled by the computer. In the first two versions of the video the score was 1-0. In the third, that ended with a draw, the computer frozed the camera for several seconds on the goalkeeper waiting alone for the attack. The work was made at a time Łukasz was particular-ly interested in the issue of psychoanalysis. No coin-cidence that he chose a football team from the city of Sigmund Freud.

Artist’s description: “I was walking in a complete-ly dark park, not seeing anything. I held the camera in one hand, which with the help of a flash illumi-nated the way. When I really didn’t know where to go and I felt fear, I pushed the camera shutter. The resulting 72 slides form “Sleepwalk” cycle, which is then presented as an installation. Slides are arranged on the projector (carousel) alternating with an empty frame. The projector changes the slides at high speed so that images of the forest are not clear, and the light from the empty frames leaves an alarming afterimage. The rhythmic sound of the changing slides sounds like a music to a thriller.”
