ANNUAL SITTING TIMES
he 2012 annual sittingoved to be inspirational
thin the first two hoursguest speaker Johnercow revealed hisrspective that sex andationship education andlitical education should made compulsory inizenship education. Hisance filled me withnfidence as I became
ware that his views one matter are closelygned with that of Torbay
outh Parliament. The
motivational speechescontinued with Peter
Tatchell encouraging usthat campaigns can besuccessful when put intoaction, as demonstrated byhis various human rightscampaigns. Finally, theother MYPs and myself leftthe conference centre withthe wise words of TimLoughton ringing in ourheads as he reminded usthat: young people makeup 20% of the populationbut 100% of the future.

THINGS CAN ONLY
GET BETTER!By Michaella PhilpotEssex
On the 1st night of the
itting there was anptional workshop to benvolved with the 'It getsetter campaign' and beart of a film. It was reallyood to see so many
MYP's passionate abouthe campaign even if they
were not part of the LGBTommunity. On the
Saturday morning we thenot to listen to the It getsetter song. It was reallyice to hear peopletanding up for themselvesnd helping deliver an
nspirational message.
a short film which hadpeople talking about their
own experiences and howbadly it has affected them, also showed some photosof people who suffered sobadly from LGBT bullyingthat they took their ownlives. To see so manyyoung people feel like theyhave no other way out wasone of the most upsettingthing from the weekend. However was also one ofthe biggest eye openers to
just how what can seemlike just a few words to oneperson can mean a greatdeal more to another.

he media are and havelways been unfriendly,
scared of young people.is a perception that Im
ure we can all agree isalse and inaccurate. Its aiew that is determined byhose who cant remember
what it is like to be youngerson; a reaction toifference and change. In009, a poll by Ipsos Morihowed that half of alltories about young people
were negative. Whats
more, a pathetic 8%ctually included a quote

from a young person. Thisis a poor show by British
press, but you wouldnthave expected any better.
I would encourage every oneof you to approach your localnewspaper and ask for acolumn to write about theissues affecting youngpeople where you live. Itdoesnt hurt to ask. As aMember of YouthParliament, it is a fantasticopportunity to get people
talking about the campaignswe care about.
A LONG WAY FROM HOM
Nottingham is a long way fromthe rolling green hills of Devon, seeing the cultural diversity at this
Annual Sitting is an excitingexperience and this is a greatthing to see compared with beingin Devon where 96% of thepopulation are White British
Devon not being very diverse isn'ta bad thing however it does haveits implications with not manypeople knowing about diversity of
religion and culture. This meansthat we may not be representingthe other 4 % of the Devonpopulation however this sitting ishelping us realise that we need tomake sure that we do representeveryone, this has made us thinkabout our local homophobiacampaign which has come about
from young people tellinhow homophobic bullying
b e i n g e f f e c t i v e l ysecondary schools. 51% population in Devon is fehowever only 24% ofDevon County Cocouncillors are female sothis mean that women arbeing fully represented? Iwe need to make everyone is representedwe will keep that fresh iminds when we are travback to our rolling hills.
Remembering that ypeople are 20% of population in the UK howwe are 100% of the futurtogether we will makemark and keep mchange!

IN MY OPINION...The UKYP AnnualSitting has trulybeen an event Iwont be forgettinganytime soon. Thedifferent activities onthe programmehave all beenphenomenal fromthe public speakingworkshop to theQuestion Time.
I enjoyed themotivationalspeeches from the
likes of Mr Speaker,Eric John and Franklyn. The question I wouldlike to ask is what arethe MPs and speakersdoing to help improvehow young people areportrayed in themedia?Venanda Madanhi,Wolverhampton
This year UKYPAnnual Sitting hasbeen amazing for me
as a newbie. Early firealarms, lots of laughter, remixes of classicChristmas tunes andmore glamrags in therooms than I thoughthumanly possible. Thisweekend has been anincredible learningcurve and I feel veryprivileged to meet allthe inspirational people
Ive come across.Jack MatthewsPoole
nnual Sitting is seen asne of the highlights of aYPs term in office. Apartom the prestige of annualtting, its also anpportunity for all MYPs toogress and develop their
kills, which they can utiliseoductively in their owncal and national
ampaigns to make theirark.
he purpose of Annualtting is not only to train
urselves to be betterYPs skillswise, but it isso the experience of livingn a University campus, omething that some MYPsad never experiencedefore. Sitting is also aboutocialising and makingends with like-minded
assionate young peoplehich occurred for myself
roughout the whole event.
