The study of how humans interact with computers, with the intent of improv‐ing computer application and hardware designs.

HCI was a major factor at the Xerox Park Research Project in the 1970s, even if the people involved weren't quite sure initially what HCI was or the monumental impact it would ultimately have. Those researchers made pioneering efforts studying how people interacted with technology. They then redesigned software and computers to improve the "computing experience" boosting productivity. Mouse technology and "desktops" with icons, primitive as they were compared to today's stan‐dards, made it easier for people to work with tech‐nology that was soon to change the computing landscape of our daily lives.

Systems Biology  This is a biology‐based interdiscipli‐nary study field that focuses on the systematic study of complex interac‐tions in biological systems, thus us‐ing a new perspective (holism in‐stead of reduction) to study them. Particularly from year 2000 on‐wards, the term is used widely in the biosciences, and in a variety of con‐texts. Because the scientific method has been used primarily toward re‐ductionism, one of the goals of sys‐tems biology is to discover new emergent properties that may arise from the systematic view used by this discipline in order to under‐stand better the entirety of proc‐esses that happen in a biological

A major application of systems biology is the ability to obtain, inte‐grate and analyze com‐plex data from multiple experimental sources using interdisciplinary tools, which might be in an area such as pro‐teomics (the study of proteins) as well as the analysis of complex can‐cer cells.

Common activities in bioinformatics  include mapping and analyzing DNA and protein se‐quences, aligning differ‐ent DNA and protein sequences to compare them and creating and viewing 3‐D models of protein structures

Nuclear Engineering is a discipline that's gone through a renaissance over the past decade. Because it does not create greenhouse gases in significant quanti‐ties, nuclear power has value as a "green" alterna‐tive to coal and oil. Nuclear applications in medicine are important, and in Homeland Security radia‐tion detection is important in deterrence of terrorist attacks.

Nuclear Engineering appli‐cations affect us all, espe‐cially in the realm of nu‐clear power, for our elec‐tricity, and increasingly in medicine. Medical applica‐tions include imaging, cxancer treatment, and diagnostic testing. Many of the medical isotopes used are created at the Chalk River reactor in Ontario, Canada.
