UK INDIA SKILLS DELEGATION – DELEGATE BIOGRAPHIES
Roy Newey Group Board Director A4e Roy has led A4e‟s international expansion from the UK into the EU,
Middle East, Africa, India and Australia. Roy is currently working
with policy makers in China, Zambia and Spain to address labour
market challenges.
Roy is an international thought leader and regular speaker on skills,
employment issues, education and entrepreneurship. Together with representatives of other
social enterprises and NGOs Roy is involved in the UN Disability agenda.
Roy has a real passion for the role skills can play in alleviating poverty in India and he was
delighted to be invited to join the UKIBC board in 2009. From this base he has led the
inception of the UK India Skills Forum and brought together more than 700 UK skills
organisations that wish to trade and participate in the India Skills Mission to provide vocational
training to 500 million people by 2022.
Clare Morley Director of Global Development Association of Accounting Technicians
AAT (Association of Accounting Technicians) is the UK‟s leading
qualification and membership body for accounting staff. It awards
around 90% of all vocational qualifications in accounting, and is
sponsored by the professional accounting bodies CIPFA, ICAEW, CIMA
and ICAS. The AAT has over 120,000 members in more than 90
countries worldwide.
Clare Morley is AAT‟s Director of Global Development. She has been in this role since June
2011, and has been with the AAT for the last 17 years. She was previously AAT‟s Director of
Education and Training, and prior to that she was Director of Professional Development. Before
working for AAT, Clare spent time as an in-house training advisor for a large Australian
insurance company.

John Bingham Chairman Association of Colleges
John Bingham was born in Yorkshire and attended Rotherham Grammar
School before becoming a Telecommunications Engineer, studying at
Sheffield University as well as at Further Education Colleges in
Rotherham (Rotherham Technical College) and Sheffield (Granville
College of FE, now part of The Sheffield College). His career has
developed from Telecommunications Engineering through Senior
Management to setting up and running a successful technical and managerial consultancy
practice, specialising in telecommunications and IT. Having worked in a professional capacity in
the telecommunications environment for some 38 years, John became Chairman of Thomas
Rotherham Sixth Form College at its incorporation and was elected to the AoC Board in 2001,
having been a founder member of AoC Yorkshire & Humberside during the mid-nineties. John
was elected Chairman of the AoC Board in January 2007.
Lesley Davies Deputy Chief Executive Association of Colleges
Lesley Davies joined the AoC, as Assistant Chief Executive and Director of
Policy, in January 2010, following three years at the Learning and Skills
Council as National Director of Framework for Excellence and Quality.
Lesley‟s early career was in corporate travel management, working for
blue chip companies, including British Aerospace, Roche Pharmaceuticals
and Coopers & Lybrand. During her time working within the travel
industry, she also held the position of Course Director for the Institute of Travel Management,
where she was responsible for the development of the UK‟s first corporate travel qualifications,
which are still the industry standard. Before moving into inspection and quality, Lesley held a
senior post and was a Higher Education Course Tutor in a College of Further and Higher
Education. She held the position of Assistant Director, Inspection and Reporting for the Adult
Learning Inspectorate and was a member of the organisation‟s set-up and merger team,
transferring from the Training Standards Council. In addition to being responsible for the
organisation‟s national inspection programme, Lesley also directed the ALI‟s groundbreaking
commercial business, and was highly successful in securing major contracts, both in the UK and
overseas. She became Area Director for Kent & Medway before taking up the role of National
Director for Framework for Excellence and Quality at LSC.

John Mountford International Director Association of Colleges
John Mountford is Association of Colleges‟ International Director,
representing and supporting Colleges as they develop their international
work. This includes leading on the AoC‟s International Charter, meeting
international stakeholders and policy makers and supporting a number of
groups focused on international education including: UKBA‟s Joint
Educational Taskforce, BIS‟ International Education Advisory Group,
British Council‟s Skills Advisory Forum, QAA‟s International advisory panel, UK India Business
Forum and UK International Skills forum and AoC‟s International Portfolio group. John is also a
board member or representative for EUproVET, World Federation of Colleges and Polytechnics,
TVET UK, UK, UKCISA and the Training Gateway. He has also represented Colleges in the
planning process for a number of key Government funded initiatives including; UKIERI 2, PMI2
and UKCPIE. John has twenty years of experience working with international students and
international partners. This has included time working as a teacher and teacher trainer in
Mexico, Czech Republic and Greece and in the private sector as a Director of Studies for a large
language school chain. Prior to taking up his post with AoC, John worked as Thames Valley
University‟s International Director. His experience of working in FE has included six years as
Sussex Downs Colleges‟ International Manager. In this period the College was awarded a
prestigious Beacon Award for its international work. He has presented at numerous
international conferences and has participated in overseas delegations promoting the UK to
senior international stakeholders.
John strongly believes in the important and valuable role international students and partnerships
play in enriching College life. He lives in Brighton with his family and enjoys travel, reading
good books and sport; with a particular love for cricket and Fulham FC.
Ann McManus Director Marketing & Business Development Ayr College
Ann McManus has more than 20 years teaching and management
experience in further and higher education. In her capacity as Director
of Marketing and Business Development she is responsible for the
development of the Ayr College brand locally, nationally and
internationally. As a member of the senior management team she is
actively involved in achieving the operational and strategic aims and
objectives of the college.
In her previous role of Director of student services Ann was instrumental in developing policy
and practice for the embedding of the equality agenda for both staff and students. She has led
the development and creation of the international department resulting in partnerships working
and international student recruitment.

During her previous managerial career in Social Work Ann gained a vast knowledge of both
theoretical and practical aspects of interaction with young people which has been invaluable in
her career with students. She is a graduate of the University of Newcastle and the University of
Strathclyde. Determine how attachments are handled.
Linda Pardoe Curriculum Manager Ayr College
Linda Pardoe has been a Curriculum Manager at Ayr College for the
past four years holding responsibility for Business, Accounting,
Administration and Tourism curriculum programmes. Her business
career started almost 20 years ago as a Director of a family business.
Linda went on to work for two local councils in East and North Ayrshire
in the field of quality assurance and auditing within the roads,
transportation and housing sectors. Linda has worked within Ayr College for over 11 years
designing, delivering and managing bespoke training programmes for a variety of business
including Prestwick Airport, HM Fire Service, SERCO, private hospitals and a host of small to
medium sized enterprises domestically and internationally including teacher training with CIIS
college in Chandigarh, India and Tourism and Marketing training for business and government
employees from a number of Nigerian organisations.
Geoff French Associate Director – International Development Birmingham Metropolitan College Geoff works for Birmingham Metropolitan College and has been in FE
for nearly 20 years. He has recently taken up the position of Associate
Director – International Development, before his new role Geoff was
Associate Director for ESOL/EFL for 6 years. Prior to this Geoff was
Head of School for Teacher Training and Modern & Foreign
Languages. He is also a member of the 157/British College
Consortium.
Paul Cornick Director of Corporate Strategy Birmingham Metropolitan College As Director for Corporate Strategy, Paul takes the lead responsibility for
college wide strategic development. With a background in skills policy
development and delivery, with the Learning and Skills Council and Skills

Funding Agency, he is tasked with taking the college in a new direction, including international
development.
Sue Sharkey Director of International Bournemouth & Poole College
A Fellow of the Institute of Learning, Sue has worked in Education for
over 20 years with experience in Curriculum design, International,
Vocational and Adult Education. Sue‟s main experience is in building
opportunities and developing business, forming partnerships, securing
external funding and maintaining quality along with experience and
understanding of international affairs/relations and international
development. A holder of a City & Guilds gold medal for innovation in teaching and learning,
Sue is well placed to advise on innovative approaches to teaching, learning and curriculum
design.
Mike Hyde Head of Product Development, Innovation and Income Generation Bournville College
Mike is Head of Innovation and New Product Development at Bournville
College, having previously worked in Advertising and the Automotive
sector. He has been at the forefront of many initiatives and projects over
the past nine years at the college. This includes dealing with large scale
redundancies and subsequent retraining for MGRover car workers.
He has developed new programmes such as the Diploma in Public Service Leadership, plus
programmes for major clients such as Cadburys and Tesco. Internationally, Mike works with
clients and partners in Brazil, China and Korea, and is now focusing on the needs and
opportunities presented by India.
Alan Sampson Deputy International Development Manager Bournville College
Alan Sampson Deputy has over 20 years experience in Further Education
as Lecturer, Curriculum Manager, Senior lecturer, Head of Department
and Faculty Head; with an emphasis on vocational education and skills
development. Co author of the "Leisure Environment", a textbook for
BTEC Leisure Studies students. Experience of working with two Awarding
Bodies - Chartered Management Institute, and Edexcel where I was
Progression & Recognition Manager in the international team developing international

progression links to UK institutions and gaining international recognition for Edexcel products.
Instigated the development of the World Heritage coastline along the south coast, and gained
an M.Phil from this work in public/private partnerships Experience as an international student!
Kathryn Oldale Vice Principal, Curriculum & Quality Bradford College
Kath Oldale is the Vice Principal: Curriculum & Quality at Bradford
College in West Yorkshire. Kath has responsibility for the higher and
further education curriculum as well as quality and standards. She
has 17 years educational management experience as well as 15
years teaching experience. Prior to becoming Vice Principal, she was
Director of Performance Management and prior to that had
responsibility for information services. Kath started her educational career in a college in
Derbyshire as a lecturer in Mathematics & Science and became Head of Faculty before leaving
to join Bradford College. Kath is a qualified metallurgist and prior to entering education worked
in the steelworks in Sheffield.
Ronald Todd Project Manager Bradford College
As Project Manager of Bradford College, I have responsibilities for sports
& leisure policy development, in line with our National Skills Academy
status. Additionally, I have been seconded to the Council working in
partnership on regeneration projects in this sector. Other duties include
International Partnership development for curricular and commercial
purposes.
Derek Mather Deputy Principal Brockenhurst College
The College is located in Hampshire in the south of England. We have
around 3,200 full time 16 – 18 year old students and 8,000 adult
learners. We have been recognised as „outstanding‟ by OFSTED, the
government‟s education inspectors since 2004. The College holds the
Training Quality Standard in recognition of its high quality and
responsive work with employers. The College is a major provider of
apprenticeship training and leads the Southampton Retail Skills Shop. Other sectors in which

we work include Hospitality, Care, Warehousing and Distribution and Construction and
Sustainable Technologies in addition to Training and Teaching and areas such as Customer
Service, Business Administration and Management. I am a Deputy Principal at the College with
responsibility for our work with employers, adult learners and the unemployed, as well as for our
international work. We currently have around 230 international students and also deliver in-
country work. We are one of the organisations involved in the Centum ATI Partnership.
Sarah Drew (BA Hons, Dip M, ACIM) Head of Partnerships & Planning Burton and South Derbyshire College
Over the last 15 years, Sarah has accumulated a wealth of
experience in partnership working & corporate relations, business
development and tendering, category and marketing management,
both internationally and in the UK across education, publishing and
technology sectors. Sarah has worked in Further Education since
2005, with significant responsibility for growing the employer and
work based learning divisions in Colleges, in particular through establishing corporate
partnerships.
At Burton and South Derbyshire College, Sarah is pivotal in the ongoing partnership with Toyota
Manufacturing UK, on initiatives which have included the delivery of over 10000 lean
automotive manufacturing and hybrid engineering qualifications, as well as the development of
the dedicated Technical Apprenticeship Academy in 2010 and currently the creation of an adult
apprenticeship centre focused on manufacturing and production.
Rajinder Kaur Mann OBE Executive Director Black Leadership Initiative® Network for Black Professionals
Rajinder Kaur Mann pioneered, and is Executive Director of, the award
winning Black Leadership Initiative®, which has become the training
and development service of the Network for Black Professionals (NBP).
In 2005 the BLI® was winner of the British Diversity Awards for
Education (Gold Standard) and has successfully delivered programmes
in other public sectors
She has over twenty eight years experience in adult, youth and community education. She was
Director of Community Education at Bilston Community College then moved on to developing
Lifelong Learning at the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames. She has worked in policy
development at NIACE, Birmingham City Council, Wolverhampton Borough Council and the
Wolverhampton Race Relations Council.

She holds a Master of Social Sciences Degree in Race and Education as well as a Bachelor of
Education from the University of Birmingham. The area of expertise in her Masters provides her
with the theoretical knowledge for understanding race equality issues particularly in the
education field.
She is passionately committed to the principles of social inclusion, community cohesion and
empowering people through education and training in order to augment economic and social
regeneration.
She has a track record in supporting black staff and promoting race equality in the sector and
her commitment to equalities and promoting social justice is demonstrated through her various
voluntary roles; Vice Chair of the Commission for Black Staff in FE, Chair and founding member
of the Network of Black Managers, General Teaching Council member, Women‟s Leadership
Network Board member, Commissioner on the Commission on 2020 Public Services, West
Midlands Governor‟s representative, Association of College‟s Governors‟ Council member and
Governor at Burton and South Derbyshire College.
She is an active member amongst the local Sikh community and is the proud mother of two
fabulous children.
Dawn Ward OBE Chief Executive and Principal Burton and South Derbyshire College Dawn has extensive experience in International, Private and Education
sectors and over 12 years experience in executive level posts. Dawn
recently lead her organisation to winning Investors in People Gold
where she was commended for her innovative and highly effective
leadership in cultural change.
Dawn graduated with an MBA from Oxford Brookes University in 2006 and in 2007 received an
Order of the British Empire (OBE) for her contribution to skills, education and training. She has
been central in establishing a National Apprenticeship Training Centre with Global Car
manufacturer Toyota and has had a major influence on Apprenticeship development in the UK
Car manufacturing industry and related supply chain.
As President of Burton and District Chamber of Commerce Dawn is now leading local
businesses to further enhance economic regeneration and prosperity through sustainable and
targeted job creation supported by 21st century skills and education training.

Joanne Patrickson Head of External Funding Calderdale College
Have worked in external funding for 18 years with a focus on education
and regeneration. More recently work at Calderdale College has involved
managing large ESF funded regional contracts across Yorkshire &
Humber to support workforce development and skills development.
Calderdale College is the largest provider of further education (post-16)
courses and work-based learning (Apprenticeships) and the sole provider of higher education
awards in Calderdale, a Metropolitan Borough in West Yorkshire
The College has a long history of international work and is a highly trusted sponsor with the UK
Border Agency delivering British Council accredited courses with a very high success rate.
Provision provides excellent progression routes to partner universities such as Bradford
University, Huddersfield University, Nottingham Trent University, Leeds Metropolitan University,
Lincoln University and Manchester Met.
Dr Amina Wakefield Head of International Office Cambridge Regional College Dr Amina Wakefield has over 20 years‟ experience in international
business development in different sectors of education. Her roles have
included designing curriculum, lecturing, managing, international
marketing and business development. She is currently Chairman of
Cambridge College Ltd, Head of the International Office at Cambridge
Regional College and Director of Cambridge Worldwide Consultancy.
Dr Wakefield has developed and managed dozens of education projects overseas. These
projects included establishing English language courses, vocational and academic programmes
in over 30 education institutions overseas.
Dr Wakefield works with both government agencies and private investors and supports them to
either establish new training facilities or upgrade existing ones. She is currently responsible for a
group of institutions in the Middle/ Far East and central Asia where she advises on the
implementation of British programmes and quality assurance of local and international
provisions. Some of Dr Wakefield‟s major consultancy work has a focus on international project
management and recruitment of teaching staff.

Gary Grieve Managing Director Capela Travel Training
Gary Grieve is Managing Director and owner of Capela Travel Training.
He is a languages graduate proficient in French, Italian and German with
over 20 years experience in marketing and management for the travel
industry. Gary has held senior positions at Saga Holidays, Jetlife and
Bridge Travel (part of the Airtours group, now Thomas Cook). He is a
Fellow of the Institute of Travel and Tourism (F Inst TT), member of the
Chartered Institute of Marketing and, since 2009, Chairman of CIMTIG (CIM Travel Industry
Group).
In 2003 Gary founded Capela, which has since become the leading trainer in marketing, sales
and business skills for the UK travel industry. Capela is accredited by the Chartered Institute of
Marketing to deliver their Marketing Diploma programmes, and by People First (the Sector Skills

Tony Howard Head of New Business Development CITB Construction Skills Tony Howard is the Head of New Business Development at CITB-
ConstructionSkills. He is currently responsible for two areas. Driving the
Overseas engagement of CITB-ConstructionSkills for all its operational
areas including our Sector Skills Council, Construction Industry Training
Board (CITB) and Awarding Body. As well as the creation of a portfolio
of courses that will help the construction industry to meet the demands
of emerging skills gaps for Sustainable Construction.
Prior to his current role, Tony was the Manager of the Building Engineering Services
Department within CITB-ConstructionSkills. This role included the creation of Solar Thermal
and Heat Pump Installation courses designed in conjunction with industry, taking into account
the requirements of Standard Assessment Procedure and emerging EU legislation.
Tony‟s career in the industry spans more than 20 years and includes working on leading edge
environmental technologies, developing energy efficient properties, and management
consultancy both in the UK and abroad.

Rajat Khawas Principal Consultant Manipal City & Guilds
Rajat Khawas is Principal Consultant for the Manipal-City & Guilds Joint
Policy Advisory Group. A post graduate of Indian Institute of
Management, Kozhikode and a Diploma in System Management, he has
over 14 years of experience in India and abroad in Learning and
Technology. Prior to this role he was heading the Corporate and
Government business in Manipal City and Guilds and played active role
in networking and consulting with key stakeholders in the skills domain. He took up his current
post, based in Delhi, in June 2011.
Chris Sims Director, India City & Guilds
Chris Sims is Director India at City & Guilds and Principal Consultant for
the Manipal-City & Guilds Joint Policy Advisory Group. A graduate of
Trinity College, Cambridge, Chris began his career with the UK
Diplomatic Service, serving in policy positions in London, Seoul and The
Hague. He subsequently joined the Centre for Skills Development (CSD)
- City & Guilds' research and development unit - as policy advisor in
2008, and joined CSD's senior management team in 2010. While with CSD he researched and
wrote a wide variety of papers on international skills policy, and led CSD's responses to a range
of government consultations. He took up his current post, based in Delhi, in June 2011.
Cindy Rampersaud Deputy Principal City & Islington College
Cindy Rampersaud is Deputy Principal at City & Islington College
responsible for the Corporate Service functions including the
International and Employer Engagement areas of business.
Cindy was appointed in February and prior to joining City & Islington
College she was Vice President, Finance for the UK division of the
global entertainment group, EMI Music.
City and Islington College is a leading London College judged as outstanding on all measures

Keith Cowell Principal City of Westminster College
Keith has worked in the Further Education sector for 24 years and has
been Principal of the City of Westminster College, a leading Further
Education College in Central London, since October 2009.
Prior to joining the City of Westminster College, Keith was Deputy
Principal at Croydon College leading major quality improvements across
the board to place the College comfortably within the top 25 per cent of Colleges nationally for
results.
Keith is Chair of the London Apprentice Company and currently sits on a number of other
committees including the Paddington Development Trust, Westminster Works, the West End
Skills Shop and Westminster‟s 14-19 Steering Group. He has forged close relationships with
Birkbeck College, University of London, Westminster and Middlesex Universities and employers
such as Carillion Construction and he is an active member of the Creative and Cultural Skills
Academy.
Vicky Petrie Director of Marketing and Recruitment Cleveland College of Art & Design
Vicky works as Director of Marketing and Recruitment for Cleveland
College of Art & Design (CCAD). CCAD is a Specialist Art & Design
College offering both FE and HE programmes at two campuses within
the Tees Valley. CCAD is rated as Outstanding by Ofsted, and is top
of the specialist colleges for student satisfaction within the 2011
National Student Survey. CCAD is also the top achieving college at
Level 3 in the North East of England. CCAD traditionally attracts students mainly from the

North East region, with a small number nationally or from Europe. CCAD now wishes to
expand this catchment area to include countries outside of Europe that are interested in taking

Rosy Banwait International Projects Manager Derby College Rosy started at Derby College in February 1999 and has worked on
various projects within the College from working in Student Services to
managing a team of mentors.
In July 2005 Rosy joined the International Office as International
Projects Manager. The objectives are to work towards the development
and implementation of the International Office‟s business plan in conjunction with the college‟s
over arching strategic vision.
Rosy has accountability for the delivery and management of both small and large scale projects
from the logistics to travelling and securing business for the college as well as building and
maintaining sound relationships with new and existing clients.
Having worked in this area for over six years, Rosy is more than aware of the importance of
cultural sensitivity and in demonstrating this has been able to build credibility amongst clients
and agents.
On a voluntary basis Rosy is on the Board of Directors for an Asian Women‟s Training
Association.
Sanjeev Ohri International Business Development Executive Dudley College
Sanjeev Ohri has been Dudley College‟s International Business
Development Executive since 2000. Having worked in the sector since
1987, he has previously worked for the Chamber of Commerce before
becoming Dudley College‟s Work Based Learning Manager, where he was
part of the management team overseeing the successful growth of
employer-based learning provision to over 1000 employers. Sanjeev has
previously been responsible for developing HR and training strategy for two private training
providers and for delivering training in leadership and management to over 500 individuals
employed in 300 different public and private institutions.

Sanjeev is also a qualified vocational assessor, internal verifier and qualified teacher,
responsible for a number of different vocational areas. Sanjeev is a qualified national and
international external verifier responsible for quality assurance and awarding centre
accreditations. Sanjeev was born in the United Kingdom and studied at Wolverhampton
University and has been based in Dudley for the last 11 years. His career has also included
establishing his own successful businesses in Hospitality and Catering and property
development. In recent years his management experience has encompassed quality assurance
systems, Internal and external audit, curriculum development, staff development, development
of national occupational standards, management information systems, developing employer
engagement strategies, designing bespoke employer partnerships around the world and
acquisitions and mergers.
More recently in India he hosted a UK college inward delegation to Andhra Pradesh with 65
Indian Engineering Colleges to focus on the needs of faculty development, staff development
and employer engagement strategies. In China, developing a vocational and „A‟ Level college
in collaboration with a national employer and vocational college. Working with British Council
on their Skills for Employability programmes in Bahrain, Yemen and Oman.
Currently involved in generating new local, national and international business leads
opportunities and presenting solutions to clients through a partnership approach. Sanjeev is
currently developing new opportunities in India, Nigeria, Bahrain, Oman, Yemen, Egypt,
Kazakhstan and China.
Patrick Casey International Director Edexcel
Patrick Casey is International Director of Edexcel, a wholly owned
subsidiary of Pearson Education, the largest education services company in
the world. He has 18 years management & leadership experience in

Preeti D‟mello is presently Regional Director – Indian Sub-continent for
Edexcel International. Her role involves leading the business for Edexcel in
7 countries of the Sub-continent. Edexcel is UK‟s largest awarding
organization, and a part of the Pearson Group.
Preeti has over 19 years of varied experience as an entrepreneur and
corporate professional in the sectors of retail, education, infrastructure development, project
consulting and international business.
During her entrepreneurial stint, Preeti established a successful retail lifestyle business with a
national footprint. Prior to that, she was Senior Specialist - Social Development & Education
Infrastructure, at IDFC (India‟s largest financial institution with a focus on infrastructure
development). At IDFC, Preeti developed models/operating structures for private educational
projects and established models for Public-Private Partnerships in education.
As founder of an independent education consultancy, Preeti focused on providing a gamut of

Iain is Assistant Principal for Exeter College responsible for all employer
engagement activity across the organisation. Iain joined Exeter College in
January 2010, having previously held both Senior Management and
College Management positions. Iain has developed Exeter College‟s range

My career in the IT industry where my successes lead to meeting Bill
Gates who I found inspirational; however as exciting as my role in the
industry was I just did not feel satisfied. I accidently fell into the
Education Sector and have now had 15 very enjoyable and just as
exhilarating years in Education. I have 15 years of experience in various
educational management roles in a variety of different areas:
Community Development, Employer Engagement, Business Development, Basic Skills for
Adults, Learner Services, Teaching and Learning Improvement and now managing Higher
Education and International Partnerships for Harrow College. When time allows I also work for
the Learning and Skills Improvement Service and also the Improvement Advisor Service –
working with these organisations keeps me at the cutting edge of quality improvement within
Education. I am very keen and excited to be able to bring these skills to partners in India.
Maria Thompson Deputy Principal, Employer Engagement and Skills Havering College of Further & Higher Education
Maria Thompson joined the college in July 2001 as Director of Studies for
Business & Management and was appointed as Vice Principal with
responsibility for the Curriculum, Quality and Student Achievement in
January 2003. She was then appointed to her current role as Deputy
Principal in June 2008.
Prior to this Maria worked at Hull College as Director of Customer Services and Head of the
Business Faculty. Before she entered education Maria had 10 years experience of working for
large blue chip international companies in the areas of Business Development and Marketing.
Maria‟s current role encompasses international provision, the college‟s work with employers and

Linda Nixon Business Development Manager Highbury College
Linda Nixon is the Business Development Manager at Highbury College,
Portsmouth. She joined the College in April 2011; her primary objective is
to build quality partnerships with overseas businesses and education
institutions to develop the college‟s international business.
She was previously Executive Sales Manager – Strategic Outsourcing, in a
number of Blue Chip Companies, one being IBM over the period of 10 years; she successfully
led the preparation of commercial tenders and award of many contracts over £10m within the
Financial Services Sector.
Linda had previously worked as an Operational Director with IBM with the responsibility of
£200m revenue portfolio in the Pharmaceutical Sector and prior to that worked as a
Management Accountant in IBM and various medium companies in the South of England for
over 18 years.
Linda is a qualified Chartered Management Accountant.
Jonathan Geale Head of International Operations Hull College
As a Chartered Mining Engineer Jon Geale worked for 17 years in the UK
coal mining industry. Excepting a few years seconded to a specialist
research and development team, the majority of this time was spent
working as an operational manager in the UK‟s deep mined coal sector.
In 1998 Jon became an Engineering Lecturer at Askham Bryan College
and moved to Hull College in 2002, becoming Head of School of
Engineering in 2003 and Head of International Operations in 2008. The Hull College Group
International Department is entering its 3rd year and successfully recruits international students
to Further Education, Higher Education and English language programmes. The Department
has developed international corporate business in Oil & Gas, Engineering, Ports & Logistics,
Retail, and Business Management and has been involved in collaborative vocational education
programmes in a number of countries.

John Cope Director Knowsley Community College
John Cope MEd MA taught in a 11-18 comprehensive school near
Liverpool for five years before becoming Head of History at the newly
opened Knowsley Central Tertiary College in 1984.
In the late 1980s he spent a year in the United States as a Fulbright
Exchange Teacher at Canton Senior High School, Illinois and travelled
widely across the USA.
After joining Knowsley Community College in 1990, he became a Senior Lecturer and
managed the Access to HE programme.
In the early 1990s John became Deputy Director for Adult and Community Education and was
responsible for managing over one hundred college outreach centres across Merseyside.
For three years he was a part-time Assistant Inspector for Ofsted and was involved in a number
of Area-Wide inspections across England.
In 2004, he was seconded to the Learning and Skills Council for three years as Knowsley‟s 14-
19 Strategy Manager working with a number of key partners.
John is currently a Curriculum and Quality Director with management responsibility for
construction, engineering, business, computing and professional studies. Last year he spent 10
days in India speaking at a conference in Khammam, near to Hyderabad, and visiting a
number of colleges and schools, including four rural primary schools where funds were raised by
Knowsley Community College staff and students to pay for school equipment.
William Doran Assistant Principal Knowsley Community College
Currently Assistant Principal with responsibility for Sixth Form Studies (
General Education, Art Design Creative Industries, Sport Public Services
and Performing Arts) I also have responsibility for Higher Education
Programmes namely Foundation Degrees and Teacher Education in

John Harrison Commercial Director and Executive Board Member Loughborough College
John Harrison is the Commercial Director and Executive Board Member at
Loughborough College, responsible for developing new and existing major
client relationships, as well as and leading on all UK & international
training & development solutions, for both the public and private sector.
Over last 12 months, John has personally led Loughborough‟s commercial
engagement strategy in Qatar, Dubai, and Kuwait, working with several
in-country ministerial departments, as well as Qatar University, Qatar Olympic Association,
Emirates NBD Bank and Mashreq Bank.
John had formally spent 25 years in executive positions with major international banks in US &
UK, leading on cross border transactions. John has also successfully established his own

Sunaina Mann NESCOT Sunaina is passionate about education and making a difference to
student lives. She became the first Female Asian Principal in the UK in
September 2005 at North East Surrey College of Technology (Nescot).
The college had been judged to be inadequate when inspected in
November 2004, with college performance below satisfactory in all
areas.
On taking up post, Sunaina embarked on a significant programme, addressed through the
„Journey 2 Outstanding‟ (J2O) change strategy that she introduced and implemented. This
aimed to modernise, improve and develop Nescot, with quality, teaching and learning at the
centre of the college‟s priorities.
When reinspected in December 2006, the overall assessment was that the achievements and
standards of the college were good, with leadership and management achieving a Grade 2; as
are five of the nine curriculum areas inspected. This was a vast improvement overall.
The most recent Ofsted inspection took place in October 2010 when Nescot was judged
outstanding for Leadership and Management, Capacity to Improve, Care and Support for
Students, Tutorials, Enrichment, Safeguarding and Financial Management. Ofsted noted that
Sunaina „has provided inspirational leadership which has changed the culture of the college,
ensuring that all staff take responsibilility for improving the quality of the experience for
students‟.
Sunaina has been an active member of the Network for Black Professionals, since inception in
1997. In June 2005, Sunaina was invited by the Department for Educartion and Skills to
become a member of the Advisory Group for race issues in the learning and skills sector
workforce. She is also a member of the Lloyds TSB Inspirational Women‟s Network, the
Women Leaders Network.

Jim has been in education for 20 years and most of this time has been with

qualified Secondary School teacher, Assessor and Internal Verifier. He also
has experience of industry and previously ran several micro-businesses in

organisations. Jim is a professional member of two UK management institutes: Chartered

Michelle Grimley Business Development Executive Scotland’s Colleges
Michelle Grimley was appointed Business Development Executive for
Scotland‟s Colleges in September 2008.
Michelle has worked extensively in the college sector since 2000 and
brought commercial, international, business development, partnership
working and vocational sector experience to this role having held the
post of International Development Manager for Clydebank College since February 2003 and
previously with Langside College.
Michelle has travelled to most countries worldwide and visits many of the priority sector markets

am currently Deputy Principal of South Staffordshire College, one of the
most successful Further Education Colleges in the Midlands of England.

learner services. I believe passionately in the power of education to

John Gary Hindmarch Director of Business Development South Tyneside College
Gary Hindmarch is Director of Business Development at South Tyneside
College in South Shields, Tyne and Wear. He is a Chartered Engineer,
who has worked with the educational sector for 20 years. We are
primarily a Further Education college, but deliver Higher Education
programmes to over 1200 full time students per year. The majority of
our overseas learners are from India, and we have developed a number
of joint partnerships to expand our provison in our specialist provision.
Dr Sujinder Sangha OBE Principal Stockton Riverside College
Dr Sujinder Singh Sangha OBE is the Principal of Stockton Riverside
College. Previously, he was the Deputy Principal of City College,
Birmingham and Vice Principal at Handsworth College. Sujinder‟s career
developed from the Black Country‟s engineering industry and industrial
relations work in the 1970s. He wrote and published two books,
established a publishing company and edited a bi-lingual fortnightly
journal between 1987 and 1994. Sujinder gained his BA (Hons) Degree from the Open
University, did an RSA Diploma in Teaching and completed his MSocSc Degree with the
University of Birmingham. He completed his PG Certificate RM qualification and has a
Doctorate research degree in Leaders and Leadership in Education from the University of
Birmingham. Sujinder was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in the New
Year 2010 Honours List by Her Majesty The Queen in recognition of his 40 years‟ contribution
to national and local FE.

Sian Harris Director, English Language Sol Tribal
Sian has 20 years of wide-ranging experience in leading innovative
English language education and training initiatives both in the UK and
overseas, and in strategic development at a national level. Sian has
designed, taught and led English language provision extensively across
both the public and private sector, and initiated successful and flexible
programmes and delivery models for learners in post-compulsory
settings, supporting their English language requirements within specific contexts; whether work-
based or academic. Her expertise in designing tailored and effective learning solutions,
harnessing the best of language learning methodologies and new technologies, alongside her
track-record in working at a strategic level with a range of national organisations and senior
stakeholders, has been reflected in previous roles as an English language adviser to the UK
government, and Manager of the BBC World Service‟s English language training unit, which she
initiated in 2000.
Stuart Muir International Trade Adviser UK Trade & Investment He left University with a degree in Electronics, working in the IT sector on
repairs and customer service. He found his way to Megazone Technology
Ltd, a laser game and visitor attraction manufacturer, where he lead their
technical department, covering Europe, North Africa, Middle East, and
India.
He started his own IT support business that provided support to SME businesses primarily
around Leicester and Nottingham but included work in Scandinavia, Poland and Dubai.
Designing, supporting and advising on systems, networks and hardware across many sectors.

This was sold in 2006 and after a project in real ale came to its conclusion, he joined EMB Ltd,
working on the Business Link contract as a business adviser.
Finally coming to UK Trade and Investment this year as an International Trade Adviser, Stuart is

Steve Rhodes International Director Wakefield College
Steve Rhodes, International Director: Wakefield College with
responsibility for International student recruitment and international
business. Steve is the current Chair of the Yorkshire and Humber TVET
Consortium and within the consortium, led of the UK China Skills
Challenge. Steve‟s other role is as Academic Director at Wakefield
College with responsibility for Culture, Media and Sport.
Dr Sarah Yan Liu International Business Manager Warwickshire College
Dr. Sarah Yan Liu, born and raised in Shanghai, China, graduated in
1992 from the elite Fudan University. A Presidential scholar, she
moved to the UK to complete her MBA and later on her PhD at
University of Nottingham. She spent 6 years as a lecturer in the UK
universities and colleges before making the life-changing decision
that she could make a larger and more positive impact if she moved
into wider international education field. Sarah has held a number of international management
positions in education sectors. Sarah‟ interest in promoting education is evidenced by her over
14 years‟ work at an international level which includes business development, partnership and
direct recruitment. Her expertise lies in the ability to identify opportunities to generate revenue

Nicole Barber Assistant Principal Westminster Kingsway College
Nicole Barber joined Westminster Kingsway College (WKC) in August
2001. Prior to this Nicole worked in the vocational education and
training sector as a teacher of computer applications and business
studies before moving into management with responsibilities for
designing and marketing programmes for adults. From 2001 up to
April 2010 her main responsibilities were for leading WKC‟s employer
engagement activities; identifying and meeting workforce development needs for private
companies and public institutions in London and the Home Counties and large international
corporations. In April 2010 Nicole was appointed as WKC‟s Assistant Principal for International
Partnerships and Enterprise – a post created to respond to the changing landscape of
vocational education and training. Her focus now is on working with international partners for
the design of customised projects for delivery on and off-shore and for promoting vocational
education and training globally. Nicole has successfully written and delivered bids for
international consortia projects funded through the UK‟s Prime Minister Initiatives (PMI2).
Nicole represents the college on the Association of Colleges International Group for Principals
and works closely with the British Council, Sector Skill Councils and other strategic bodies for
the promotion of UK VET.
Ijeoma Akigwe Head of Marketing Westminster Kingsway College
Ijeoma Akigwe, Head of Marketing and Learner Experience for
Westminster Kingsway College, has over 20 years experience in education
marketing and has been a valued member of the College management
board for 11 years. Her role is to achieve the College‟s mission and
strategic objectives by ensuring the delivery of an effective and productive
marketing, sales and promotional plan, which widens participation both
nationally and internationally. She also leads on the provision of customer services and support
for our learners, supporting their aspirations and achievements outside the classroom. A former
merit award winner for the HEIST Young Education Marketer of the year in 2000, Ijeoma has
been consistently successful in her leadership of the marketing and learner experience team
and has won over 22 FE First and HEIST education marketing awards. Ijeoma holds a BA hons
degree, a Postgraduate Diploma in Marketing, an MBA and is a member of the Charted
Institute of Marketing.

Anthony Pimm International Marketing Manager Wiltshire College
Tony Pimm currently works for Wiltshire College as the International
Marketing Officer responsible for overseas sales and marketing activity.
This includes setting up agent networks as well as student recruitment
and new business opportunity development. He has worked for Wiltshire
College for 9 months and enjoys both the opportunity to establish new
opportunities and the chance to meet people from all geographies.
Prior to working at Wiltshire College he worked for IBM for 15 years as an International
Marketing Manager responsible for sales and services in the SEA region. He has also worked
closely with the board of an IBM spin off company to establish and grow the new business and
develop new product streams.In his spare time, he is still trying to make his 3 children leave
home. He is hopeful that this year he will be successful as they have all accepted places at UK
Universities. He is also married and has a dog.
