• Why use an e-portfolio to support learning?– Process (process of learning or transitional

process)– Product (evidence, presentation)But we mustn’t forget that in amongst all the talk about supporting learning, there is the issue of efficiency and cost-saving

Challenges arrive

• When the process itself straddles different processes and there is no acknowledgment of the ‘gap’ – this isn’t just a technical problem this is about value and audience (e.g. potential employers)

• When there is no recognition that there may be some efficiencies, but there is also new work to do – e.g. feedback on work shared either formatively or summatively

Two examples of challenges

• Innovative assessment• Staff CPD – (e.g. HEA UKPSF)

E-portfolios may be a solution but tension arises if this is at odds with:• the discipline• the institutional culture• learner expectations• or even who is funding the learning

Complexity

Challenges are even more acute when a champion of the e-portfolio changes jobsLook at what we lose!

Success 1

Will only be achieved if the e-portfolio approach: Has sustained & continuous senior management support, vocal endorsement, and ongoing scrutiny

Success 2Reliant on EP practitioner & software

The survival of the e-portfolio will depend on being able to demonstrate: • efficiencies on a large scale• results – retention, grades, graduate jobs• statistics - generated by software itself and

the wider online learning environment
