Welcome to Kinetic’s fifth annual digital Out of Home handbook, produced in conjunction with digital production company Grand Visual.

The aim of the handbook is to provide useful insight and reference to all parties involved in the planning, creation and execution of advertising on screens across all environments in the UK’s digital OOH (DOOH) market. Media owner investment in DOOH continues to grow apace and the sector is driving the majority of growth in the OOH medium as a whole.

This handbook will guide you through the variety of opportunities from a media, creative and technical perspective. It provides insight into every category from iconic landmarks to national networks and niche targeting. Information provided on each format includes costs, technical specifications and a Kinetic View – our opinion of how this medium can be best utilised for effective brand communication.

As the sector evolves and matures so does the creative use of the medium. We have seen a promising increase in near live and dynamic campaigns recently, with more brands choosing to deliver contextually relevant content to audiences on a national scale. We’ve also seen a departure from the traditional two week campaign duration, as brands capitalise on the inherent flexibilities and capacity for time-sensitive and tactical delivery of DOOH. To reflect this shift, this year’s handbook features both two week and one day pricing to provide you with a broader feel for the medium’s entry level costs.

Grand Visual is a production and creative technology company offering platforms and services that unlock the communication potential of digital Out of Home media – where digital experiences intersect with the real, physical world.

We combine creative thinking, technology, expertise and production techniques to help brands and agencies target Out of Home audiences across the emerging range of digital media opportunities in the UK and abroad. Our clients are made up of brand teams, creative and media agencies as well as businesses that own or operate public facing environments.

Digital inventory has invigorated the OOH advertising channel. The medium has expanded quickly as new inventory and technologies have come into play. This flux has created a medium rich with creative opportunity but one which is still in the early stages of having mature processes, platforms and standards in place. It’s a fantastic space for creativity and innovation but requires specialist support for brands and agencies. Grand Visual has been operating in and helping define this exciting channel since 2005.

The past year has seen the continuing trend towards more interactive and dynamic ideas. Social media is now a regular partner to digital OOH and the growth in interactive and digital experiential activations is striking.

Our growing body of work and expertise has received considerable recognition in the last year. Accolades have included induction to the Outdoor Hall of Fame, the Outdoor Grand Prix at the Epica Awards, Gold at the Kinsale Sharks, Best Use of Innovation at the Outdoor Planning Awards, silvers from the Creative Circle and various bronzes at the London International Awards.

The Grand Visual team is led by founder, Neil Morris and Director of Creative and Technology, Dan Dawson and is based in central London.

Our research shows the future looks pretty rosy for brands who use digital OOH as consumers are quickly embracing a more technology-led version of our future - two thirds of us expect to see digital screens in most city centres in the future and a similar number want to be able to access the internet via digital screens out of the home.

“60% of us agree that digital OOH screens are beneficial anywhere where people have to wait”

“40% of us believe interacting with digital OOH is a great way to pass the time whilst travelling”A third even expect digital screens will soon show ads directly targeting them - relevant to them and what they are doing. A quarter expect they will be able to interact with most advertising wherever they see it and even buy a product or service via a digital OOH screen - instant gratification for consumers and instant ROI for brands.

Don’t forget the importance of context and location - over half would be more likely to react to digital ads communicating a special offer that is immediately available in a retailer close by and 44% think more favourably about brands that offer something relevant to their location.

The proliferation of smartphones and apps is translating into growing confidence amongst consumers and we are seeing more virtual shopping experiences, with advertisers like Argos, Tesco and Ocado all adopting the creation of virtual stores to drive brand activation and purchase.

“Over half of consumers believe direct interaction through screens out of the home has a huge potential for shopping and 70% appreciate the usefulness and convenience of such virtual stores”The popularity of location-based services (LBS) has seen significant growth in the last year; it is estimated that the number of active users of location-based services and apps grew 80% in 2012. We are seeing brands and agencies produce increasingly imaginative campaigns that harness the ability to deliver relevant and useful content to a precisely targeted audience and we envisage bespoke location-based campaigns to eventually dominate the digital OOH arena.

The drive towards NFC ActivationIt is likely that NFC will play a significant role in the future and some key insights from our NFC study with JCDecaux are that whilst NFC delivers strong interaction preferences, results and a valued experience, we still need to see advancements in consumer education and NFC-enabled smartphone penetration before this type of activation enjoys critical engagement.

The brands that elicit the most positive interactions do so through a combination of relevance, dynamic content and a strong call to action. QR Codes are a rational interim method of accessing content, but NFC is most likely to prevail in the long term and should

Digital OOH insights not be discounted. There is immediate demand for mobile coupons and overwhelming consumer positivity about the experience (78% of consumers are positive, 44% rate it as excellent) but education is still an important factor. Various brand and test research has also identified a strong halo effect around the use of digital and technology experiences in OOH.

Touch, gesture and activation choicesIn conjunction with Clear Channel we conducted a study to measure consumer sentiment around a range of interactive technologies and the study found high levels of engagement, long dwell times and an appetite for further interaction. People found interacting with an OOH poster positive and fun with 92% of participants agreeing interaction makes an advert stand out more. 82% also say interactivity makes an ad more engaging. The touchscreen mechanism was the most appealing method to initially interact with 78% more likely to choose touchscreen over, in this example, body motion.

ConclusionsConsumers are positive about brands that encourage interaction and there is a strong willingness amongst mobile users to interact with brands across content, voucher/deals, information and data capture. Interactivity and DOOH have the potential to drive the conversion and retention of customers - compelling content is the main driver of interaction for existing customers; deals will help attract new customers. High dwell time locations – including city centres and malls – and proximity to the purchase environment are key drivers for consumer interaction and activation.

Digital OOH has had an exciting year and is now a market that has scale across the country and also one that strongly embraces content, social media, real-time messaging, technology and activation.

Significant media owner investment and genuine attempts to be more accountable, measureable and flexible have drawn new brands to the medium and we have seen many dynamic campaigns using touch and smartphone interactivity, gesture recognition, live content, data streams and social media content.

In London the market is close to maturity, but we are seeing considerable expansion in roadside opportunities in the key regional cities and we expect this area to grow rapidly within the next year. Mall and rail have been key areas of investment in recent years - new installations at the recently modernised King’s Cross station in London, the digitisation of the Eurostar terminals at St. Pancras, and the forthcoming digital opportunity at Waterloo have been welcome developments, as is the continued expansion of the D6s format across stations nationwide.

Low level growth of large format, iconic sites is also expected, with media owners such as Ocean, Outdoor Plus and JCDecaux widening their distribution across London, and others, including Ocean, MediaCo and Signature filling gaps in major regional cities across the country.

Primesight have introduced a national network of digital screens in cinemas all with interactive technologies permanently installed. We also expect JCDecaux, Clear Channel, CBS and others to substantially increase the interactive functionality of their small format, mall and transport networks.

Digital technology is significantly reshaping the nature of OOH here are some trends that are making an impact:

Interactive 6 sheetsWe expect to see a growth in the use of interactive 6 sheets in more environments. A number of brands have embraced interactive campaigns creating real engagement, social media tie-ins and data capture while promoting brand advocacy. We expect touch to prevail as the key interaction technique, but camera-based technology is also possible. NFC or QR integration will facilitate content download and brand activation.

LLOYDS TSB Play Sidecar Grand Prix - This interactive touch screen featured on 34 sites nationally and challenged players to collect different icons in the fastest time. Each icon represented a key smart feature of the current account. The game was fully integrated and could also be played across mobile and online platforms.

A Digital Future People-powered campaignsUser generated content (UGC) will become more ubiquitous making consumer engagement with OOH authentic and real through live brand experiences and smartphone interaction. Content generated can be leveraged to connect through to other media platforms including other OOH formats, social media and digital. UGC streamed to digital OOH puts consumers at the heart of any campaign and creates a platform for sharing experiences and social media commentary on a broadcast scale. Grand Visual’s OpenLoop technology allows brands to directly update live content to multiple digital formats at the touch of a button.

MARMITE XMAS LIGHTSPull your ‘Love It’ or ‘Hate It’ face - The campaign encouraged participants to tell the world what they think of Marmite by uploading their pictures via Marmite’s Facebook page or by using an interactive bus shelter screen. Those taking part were given an allotted time slot to see themselves up in lights. Those who couldn’t make it down to the Capital could still see their ‘face in lights’ via a live webcam and an online gallery on Facebook.

Mobile InteractivitySmartphones will infiltrate all aspects of OOH interactivity and activation. You can expect to see growth in mobile interactive campaigns via QR and NFC as NFC-enabled phone penetration, contactless payments and m-commerce grows. The increased availability and demand for campaign activation is becoming an increasing feature of the UK market. Kinetic has conducted two major insight projects with partners JCDecaux and Clear Channel to understand how interaction and activation works (from Touchscreen to NFC) and has a fuller understanding of how campaigns can activate consumers in the right way. Use of mobile Augmented Reality techniques such as BlippAR and Aurasma is also increasing.

DESPICABLE ME 2 Command the Minions - This mobile controlled campaign delivered an interactive, personalised, geo-specific experience. Mall screens invited consumers to control and personalise the on-screen creative via their mobile phone. Users text any command along with their name to a shortcode and seconds later the minions act out the instruction accordingly with an on-screen thanks to the named participant. A return text links to a copy of the personalised minion film which can be shared socially.

A Digital Future Multi-sensory experiencesMulti-sensory creations are gaining popularity as OOH experiences are being made more immersive through the addition of touch, sound and other stimuli. Technology advancements offer strong connections to social media as consumers are keen to share their experiences. 4D projections with sound/smell, lift wraps with smell, sound showers and touchscreens all provide opportunities to enhance the human brand experience.

3 PONY MIXER #DancePonyDance - This socially enabled, dynamic digital OOH campaign was both geo-targeted and sound enabled. Via the mobile app, users could make their own Pony Mashup and share their videos via Twitter, hashtagging their local digital OOH site for a chance to feature on the big screen complete with the participant’s twitter handle and dedication.

Urban installationsThe emergence of smarter cities to galvanise our immediate surroundings has created the landscape and opportunity to communicate directly to the urban, mobile and connected consumer. Urban dwellers expect more from their surroundings and actively adopt brands that enrich their environment. And there is no better way to do this than through OOH. Despite having global connections, people’s identity is still heavily anchored to the city they live in and through OOH, brands have the opportunity to start conversations amongst these urban communities and become part of the cultural and social landscape. From living art to graffiti walls expect to see an increase in examples of brands creating artistic installations in unexpected places.

LYNX APOLLOAstronauts are the top heroes, become one - The interactive installation allowed boys (and girls) to be the hero astronaut accompanied by two Lynx girls. All the pictures generated by the interactive bus shelters and mall screens were posted to Lynx UK’s Facebook gallery where users tagged themselves and shared. As well as the interactive units Lynx hung a 40 foot astronaut in Westfield London. Users could upload their picture by email or text and see their face displayed in the visor of the giant astronaut moments later.

A Digital Future The futureAll in all it is an exciting time for digital OOH. Animation allows creative story-telling in a way not possible on static OOH as well as the ability to use and bring dynamic content to life. Brands have the opportunity to be more flexible and real-time in their messaging, with day-part, reactive, contextual and time-sensitive tactical campaigns all possible.

Immediacy makes OOH much more relevant to consumers. We’ve seen live reaction to sporting events, betting odds, live tweets and other shared social commentary. And as a consumer, becoming part of the campaign yourself via user-generated copy, sharing photos and experiences to a wider public audience, seems to be gathering momentum as a trend. There were some great examples of this across 2012 with Nike’s user campaign, The Sun’s news campaign and many reactions to the Olympics with dynamic content. Everything Everywhere launched its 4G marketing campaign with a concerted digital OOH campaign reflecting different content according to location and environment.

Interactivity is likely to continue to develop. Firstly, touchscreen technology as a natural form of screen interaction is particularly popular and we expect this to continue. We have seen this type of activity move from one-off executions to more national and multi-environment, for example Lloyds TSB activity across roadside and mall locations.

We expect this to be combined with mobile interaction to create a “digital take-away” extending the campaign beyond the poster or screen. Mobile interactivity is here to stay as the smartphone becomes more important to everyday lives. Our learnings from interactive and mobile projects show there is a real impetus for touchscreen interaction and the use of mobile to download content or offers.

Expect more national campaigns to reflect the media owner investment, the client learnings and consumer flexibility around smartphone use and the continued improvement in quality and dominance of environments to continue to shape the future of digital OOH.

OpenLoop

The extraordinary growth in digital OOH has delivered a medium rich with creative opportunity but still in the early stages in terms of having mature processes, platforms and standards. So while the medium is “digital” it has been hard to use it in a digital way. Creative and media agencies have been faced with the challenge of delivering on the promise of dynamic, relevant and timely digital creative running across multiple networks and diverse formats. OpenLoop solves this problem.

OpenLoop navigates the diversity and nuances of this fast growing media landscape. The dashboard adds the ability to integrate online social media technologies like Twitter and Instagram, universal feeds such as media RSS and RSS, as well as user-generated images and content. Since launching in July 2012, OpenLoop has already delivered dynamic, digital OOH campaigns in the UK for brands such as Nike, BP, News International and Heineken.

Accelerator

In 2010, Grand Visual and Kinetic Worldwide joined forces to launch Accelerator; a dedicated online workflow tool designed to facilitate copy production and distribution for digital OOH campaigns.

Accelerator simplifies the delivery process by handling the workflow and communicating with all stakeholders involved at each stage in the digital OOH ad cycle. It manages the initial communication of campaign copy specs and deadlines, the compliance process required by certain networks and the QA of final copy. If necessary, Accelerator is also capable of adjusting, reformatting and converting incorrectly submitted files. Finally, Accelerator distributes the approved copy to the relevant media owners complete with detailed play out instructions whilst providing a full audit trail for clients and agencies.

In 2012, Accelerator trafficked digital copy for over 150 separate campaigns, totalling 2,500 pieces of copy. We also helped deliver and manage tactical, outcome based campaigns for BP, Holiday Inn, Nike, Ford and Barclays.

For more information on trafficking copy for digital OOH networks please go to www.acceleratorww.com.

Types of DOOH

Types of DOOH Formats

• Updated throughout the day• Location specific• An idea that uses multiple slots in one loop• Delivered dynamically in an ‘as live’ manner over IP

In transit environments people are on the move, driving, walking or commuting. Consumers in transit environments are still very receptive to dynamic engagement through animation and entertainment.

In microdwell environments people have more time to consume and absorb screen content. This could be by interacting with a screen or simply slowing down as they pass.

The audience in a dwell environment has the time to consume more content and often have the chance to follow a more complex story or communication.

The Cromwell Road Digital Gateway reaches an affluent and influential audience travelling between Central and West London, out to Heathrow Airport and beyond, and can be offered with ultimate flexibility. This recent conversion from backlights to digital offers a fantastic opportunity to occupy a run of 9 screens targeting both inbound and outbound traffic along arguably one of the busiest arterial roads in the UK. Standard portrait poster size. Most common format in the UK, commonly seen on bus shelters and roadside.

Standard billboard size. Landscape, half the size (length) of a 96 sheet.

Standard billboard size. Largest of the standard landscape formats.

A type of virtual reality that aims to duplicate and enhance the world’s environment in a computer or mobile screen.

Traditional OOH media normally has fixed two week periods where advertising can be booked in specified packs. Buying flexibility identifies the ways the sales company allows the media to be bought, for example by time-of-day.

Digital Billboard. Nearly always large format LED billboards. They are roadside and tend not to be animated.

Digital Billboard Plus. The same as a Digital Billboard with the added benefit of allowing for full motion creative copy.

Dynamic Poster. An electronic poster, normally in portrait format, able to display full motion video. Primarily located where people are on the move.

Geo-fencing is a technology that allows an advertiser to select a geographic point using latitude and longitude information and then to create a virtual “fence” around that point of a given radius to deliver a digital communication to a particular audience.

Gesture recognition technology is an interactive technology allowing users to interact with content on screen using natural body movements such as pointing and waving.

The total number of people expected to pass the panel or network of panels in an average two week period.

Provides a resolution that is substantially higher than that of a standard screen.

Period during which an OOH campaign will be displayed. Also denotes the start date of a booked campaign.

LCD Liquid Crystal Display. Screens capable of displaying high quality images with sufficient brightness even with quite high levels of ambient light.

LEDLight Emitting Diode. In the digital OOH context the only technology currently capable of displaying high intensity images in direct daylight.

LoopMany networks run content that repeats itself at regular intervals. This is commonly called the loop length. Editorial content may change per loop, but ads will remain the same.

Multi-sensoryexperience

Sensory branding is a type of advertising that appeals to all the senses in relation to the brand. OOH campaigns have incorporated images, sound, touch, taste and even smell to appeal to audiences.

Multi-touchTouch sensitive surface able to recognise the presence of two or more points of contact on the same screen.

OOHOut of Home. Traditionally posters and billboards were generically called Outdoor. All media OOH is not Outdoors. Not all OOH sites are necessarily outdoors.

OOH TV Mimics TV screens and runs TV style ads, with the option of audio.

OTSOpportunity To See. An OOH media term used to identify the fact a person was within view of a panel on one occasion. Average OTS determines the average number of times people are exposed to the advertising during a campaign.

Out-of-charge Date at which a campaign will stop being displayed. Also a period when location is not available for advertising, in order to be refurbished, for example.

Portrait A digital screen in vertical orientation.

Primaryaudience The predominant audience to the format. Many networks attract different audiences depending on day and time of day or are applicable to a number of niche audiences.

Sales The company responsible for selling and delivering advertising campaigns on the screens or network. Usually the sales contract is exclusive to one company.

Standardcampaigncost

The cost of booking a standard campaign as summarised in the media section of the format listings. For other package costs, please consult your Kinetic account team.

User-generated content

User-generated content (UGC), also known as consumer generated media (CGM) or user-created content (UCC), refers to publicly available media content produced by audiences and end-users.
