In collaboration with ILLINOIS INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY Chicago, U.S.A., PunjabUniversity established Department of Chemical Engineering and Technology (DCET) in theyear 1958. Prof. R. E. Peck from I.I.T. Chicago headed the Department in the beginning andlaid foundation of its enduring work culture that is prevailing today.Over these years, DCET has established itself as a premier institution engaged in impartingquality technical education and churning out quality research in the domain of ChemicalEngineering. To meet present challenges as well as emerging trends in this field, we havehighly qualified core faculties from universities of USA, Canada, Germany, Denmark, NewZealand and U.K. We have maintained world class curriculum, excellent laboratory facilityand support infrastructure. At any given time, the department has 450 students.We ensure that students at us get world class technical education so that they are ready towork in most sophisticated technical environment. The student body at University Campusis composed of people from diverse socio-economic, ethnical and racial background. Thediverse environment at University campus makes students tolerant to differences ofopinion and receptive to new ideas. The learning culture at university trains our studentsnot only in technical but also in soft skills so that they can deliver result in every situation.Our distinguished alumni are occupying coveted positions around the world. They are asource of pride and inspiration to us. This makes our student ready tomeet present as well as emerging challenges in this field.As we know the present economic downturn is lashing all institutions. The unprecedentednature of this circumstance requires fresh thinking and fresh perspective. We have cared toprepare our students to bring that freshness to the situation so that institutions canrebound with double force.We have celebrated Golden Jubilee of our Department in 2008. As part of Celebration, wehosted CHEMCON-2008 (61st Annual Session of the Indian Institute of ChemicalEngineers). This also included a joint US-India conference on energy. This gave a greatopportunity to our students to organize and participate in this conference. This opportunitymade our students aware of the present reality and armed them to handle it successfully.I appreciate the excellent support and enthusiastic co-operation received by us from all ofyou in placing all our students in the previous session 2008- 2009. The Panjab University was incorporated in 1882 in Lahore and wasthe fourth in United India. In 1956, university campus was relocatedin Chandigarh and its sandstone campus was designed by PierreJeanerette under the guidance of the legendary Le Corbusier.The main campus at Chandigarh is spread over 550 acres and is one

The university has been identified as one of the sixcenters in the country for super computer facilities to serve theentire north-western region. It is the only university in the country toproduce two noble laureates, Dr. Hargobind Khurana and Dr. AbdusSalam and our prime minister Dr Manmohan Singh.The Energy Research Centre was established in 1983 in Departmentof Chemical Engineering and Technology at Panjab University topromote R&D and Extension activities in the emerging field ofRenewable Energy. It has emerged as a major focal point of R&D andextension on energy and environment at national and internationallevel. Pioneering work in the area of solar thermal energy Storage,Solar Detoxification, Biomethanation of agricultural/industrial/forestwastes, Biomass combustion and gasification, Indoor Air Quality,Energy and Environmental Conservation and Management andHydrodynamics of Polymeric Solutions is being carried out at theCentre.

CHEMCON 2008, the 61st Annual Session of IIChE aims to provide aknowledge sharing platform and a forum for Indian chemical andallied industries, academia and research for continuous education,professional excellence and networking

CHEMCON 2008 saw various eminent scientists, professors andindustrialists from India and abroad come together to talk on thevarious ways in which green technology could be used and howimportant sustainable growth is for overcoming the energy crisis theworld may have to face in the coming future.

Based on the theme of Green Technology and SustainableDevelopment, the session will help to provide a forum forsubstantial discussion on the emerging technologies andmethodologies being developed to overcome the challenges thatexist in all the areas of chemical engineering.

US-India Joint Session: A joint US-India conference on energy wasorganized on 28th and 29th December, 2008.

Shri Dhirubhai Ambani Commemoration Day was celebrated on28th December 2008.
