for student use.

Who can use UHS?

• Full-time students are assessed the health fee with their mandatory fees and tuition.

• Part-time students can voluntarily pay the health fee or be seen on a fee for service basis.

• Summer coverage available with optional health fee or on a fee for service basis.

What does the Health Fee Cover?

• Unlimited office visits for:– Injury or illness– Allergy injections

• Well-patient physical exams• Women’s care (gynecology)• Observation room care • Phone information nurse• On-call physician for

emergency after hours

• Limited medications • Behavioral Health office visits• Access to health education

resources • Health education and wellness

services:– Nutrition Counseling– Tobacco Treatment Counseling– Sexual Health Education Session

What is NOT Covered under the Health Fee?

The health fee is designed to cover primary care and preventive medicine. Items not covered by the health fee include:

• Diagnostic testing (X-rays, most lab tests)• Hospitalization• After hours care: Urgent Treatment, Emergency Room• Surgical procedures• Referrals to specialists• Prescriptions• Vaccines

Students are encouraged to have health insurance to cover these expenses.

copy of their immunization record that can be scanned in to the Electronic Medical Record

– Student ID card– Insurance card

– 3 observation beds are provided for close medical management of complicated conditions.

PAWS CenterPromoting & Achieving Wellness for Students

• The PAWS Center assists students in reducing their health risks through education, goal setting, lifestyle coaching, outreach events and support services. We value health and wellness for academic success and strive to promote a healthy lifestyle for students!

• The center is located on the first floor of UHS and offers the following:– Health education literature and resources including info about nutrition,

quitting tobacco and sexual health.– Health education models – Health education and wellness programs.– Student peer health educators.– Computer and internet access. – We can help students get connected to other campus resources!

UK is a Tobacco Free Campus

UHS offers tobacco cessation counseling by a certified tobacco treatment specialist.

Insurance

• The University sponsors a student health insurance plan through Academic Health Plans, Inc. and United Health Care.

• This plan offers illness and injury coverage, complementing the care provided through the health fee.

Health insurance is highly recommended.

UHS accepts the University-sponsored insurance as well as dependents with UKHMO.

Student can turn in charges for reimbursement to their private provider.

Other Available Services:Vaccines

University of Kentucky requires meningitis vaccine for all students living in campus housing.

The University of Kentucky strongly recommends that all incoming students be immunized before enrollment (either through vaccination or naturally acquired immunity) against the following illnesses:

Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Polio, Varicella, Tetanus/Tdap, Diphtheria, Pertussis, Hepatitis B,

Meningococcal Meningitis, and HPV.

•Some colleges, including Dentistry, Health Sciences, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy and Public Health, require vaccinations or proof of immunity. More information on college-specific immunizations policies can be found at the college’s website.

•Students will be required to present to UHS for a compliance visit as indicated by their respective health science college. Students must bring an official copy of their immunization record and/or titer results when visiting UHS for compliance.

•All students are highly encouraged to bring a copy of their immunizations (or a copy on their cell phone) to UHS to scan into the EMR when they first visit us.

Parents’ To Do list: Look into the UK sponsored Student Health Insurance and

compare benefits with your plan. (If your student already has private insurance coverage on parental insurance policy make sure they have their own card or a copy to bring to all of their appointments) Check your student’s status regarding

recommended/required vaccines. On their first visit to clinic have them bring a copy of the immunization record so that it can be scanned into the EMR.

Remind your student to come to UHS if they aren’t feeling well or need one of our preventive care services.

Encourage your student to become involved in their health care.
