Purpose-built, modern facilities at theUniversity of Keele, Staffordshire Universityand UHNM sites attract the next generationsof doctors, nurses, radiographers, pharmacists,scientists and technologists to train and work atthe hospital.

The university’s medical school trains more than130 students in each of the five years of itsundergraduate programme. All third years studyat UHNM, many spend years four and five at thehospital, with some working in Shropshire.

Meanwhile, hundreds of midwives,radiographers, nurses, biomedical scientists,pharmacists, technicians and nursing assistantsacross a range of clinical specialties train at theuniversity and go on to work at the hospitals.

Modern innovative curriculums for all studentsmake the most of purpose-built facilities at boththe university campus and the hospitals. It’s partof a learning and training package which aimsto develop the very best clinicians, nursing andclinical staff and encourage them to stay andwork here.

There are lots of unique opportunities whiletraining at UHNM. A student-led volunteerscheme, Med-Path, has been developed in

partnership with the University Hospitals ofNorth Midlands Skills Academy, wherebymedical students are involved in deliveringactivities and developing opportunities withinlocal schools and colleges. UHNM has seen yearon year growth in clinical placements offered atthe hospital, with an amazing 41,000 dayscompleted and 200 qualified nurses andmidwives welcomed in 2014/15.

For our registered staff we continue to offer apreceptorship programme and we supported347 staff to undertake a degree or masters levelstudy to ensure we develop our workforce tomeet the changes in service delivery.

There are also well-subscribed courses forqualifications in pharmacy, radiography andbiomedical sciences.

Our thriving Research and Developmentdepartment strives to provide highquality, pioneering research at every stage of patient care. A core part ofthe NHS is creating a culture ofinnovation and giving patientsthe opportunity to get involvedin all aspects of research.

More than 3,500 patientsper year are recruited intostudies lead byinternationallyrenowned researchersat the UHNM to aid ina variety of areasincluding stroke,cancer, neurology,imaging andrespiratory medicine.

Within the department,research nurses,radiographers,pharmacists and midwives

work alongside clinicians, multidisciplinaryteams and support services to identifypotential research participants, discusstrials with patients and provide carethroughout the studies.

ABOUT ALLIED HEALTH PROFESSION

Nutrition and Dieteticsis a well-establishedservice at theUniversity Hospital ofNorth Midlands. Thereare over 45 dietitiansworking for the hospitals whichinclude Royal Stoke University Hospitaland County Hospital.

We also have a service levelagreement with the local MentalHealth Trust and we support a varietyof Outpatient Clinics, domiciliaryvisits, dialysis centres and outreachwork for some dietetic specialities.

The dietetics team here is forwardthinking, vibrant and hard workingwith an ethos of doing our best forpeople using our services. Specialityteams include paediatrics, acutemedicine and surgery, community forGeneral practice clinics, MentalHealth, Learning disabilities, nutritionsupport, trauma, bariatrics and renaldietetics. Each of these teams alsohas specialities within themdeveloping a high level of expertise.

The department trains studentdietitians, taking students formCoventry University for A, B and C

placements and enjoys a high rate ofstudent satisfaction.

The dietetic teams working here arekeen to be involved in any aspect ofnutrition and embed the nutritioninfra-structure of the Trust includingnutrition support initiatives, Hospitalfood initiatives and Staff well-being.There is a continual drive with a rangeof colleagues from other professionsto improve nutrition standards in ourhospitals; our aim is to be the bestand staff are encouraged to developtheir potential with support ofcolleagues.

Nutrition and Dietetics

Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy UHNM Therapies comprising bothPhysiotherapy and Occupational Therapyare the second and third largest AHPprofessional groups respectively with over200 staff currently working across theRoyal Stoke and County sites.

We cover the full range of specialitiesmaking us one of the most attractiveemployers of therapy staff, in particularnewly qualified. We offer experience inthe general areas of respiratory,musculoskeletal and neurology and offer awide range of speciality rotations. We areable to offer opportunities for staff togrow and develop their careers in astimulating and forward thinking service.This gives them the foundations to enablethem to take on more senior roles in andoutside of the service and organisation.

Our Therapists have a major contributionto make in delivering quality health care.Their role is invaluable in achieving rapidand best outcomes for patients andtherapists are recognised within the Trustas invaluable and key members of themultidisciplinary team.

We are the local clinical educationprovider for both Physiotherapy andOccupational Therapy undergraduates andhave a productive partnership with Keele,Coventry and Derby Universities. We havegained national and internationalrecognition for service improvement andfor being front runners in leadingtransformational change and our staffhave presented at conferences and goodpractice workshops.

INVESTING IN THE FUTURE

AT the Royal Stoke site eightmajor development projects areunderway costing £35 million.

A new 28 bedded ward with 12 singlebed side rooms has already beencreated, a new-build extension hasgiven the Critical Care Unit 12 morebeds, the Springfield building hasundergone a major refurbishment andoffices have been moved to give thePathology labs more space followingcentralisation.

We are planning to deliver moreinpatient beds for oncology, two newwards and two modular theatres,

another 28 bedded ward with 12 single siderooms and a new two storey extensionfor two MRI scanners.

County Hospital in Stafford isbenefitting from an investment of £25million on 16 projects with a scheduledcompletion date of March 2017.

Already delivered at County Hospital arenew ultrasound facilities and midwife-led birthing rooms in the MidwiferyUnit, a children’s assessment andemergency centre, an MRI scanner andan ultraclean theatre with lay up room.

The remaining projects are due on

stream during the next 18 months andinclude essential fire safety work, phaseone of a 12 station renal dialysis unitand phased improvements to theemergency department and outpatients.

2016 will see work start on a cateringinitiative, phase two of the 12 stationrenal dialysis unit, the creation of adedicated chemotherapy unit, theatrerefurbishment and endoscopyimprovements.

Work starts in 2016 on a revamp of fivewards which will continue into 2017when the second phase of essential firesafety work takes place.

Child Health Directorate

The Children’s Centre – Cheethams – hasbeen providing healthcare for NorthStaffordshire’s children for generationsand is now based inside the new RoyalStoke University Hospital main building.The Neonatal Unit, also part of theDirectorate, is based in the Maternitycentre.

Children’s care is also provided at theCounty Hospital, Stafford, which houses aChildren’s Outpatient Department and

Assessment Unit within the Children’sEmergency Centre. At Stoke there is anIntensive Care Unit, wards and adedicated Children’s Outpatient area andCommunity Paediatrics.

A team of over 450 staff, includingdoctors, nurses, clinical support andadministration staff, work together toensure that the young patients and theirfamilies have everything they need to feelas welcome and comfortable as possible.

With its Children’s Assessment Unit andA&E, as well as wards and an

outpatients area, the Centre hasa reputation for providing

first-class health services fora common childhood

Specialist treatment is provided in anumber of areas including allergy, gastro,cystic fibrosis, oncology, diabetes, renaland respiratory medicine. We haveambitions to develop a Children’s Hospitalwithin a Hospital to align the Royal Stokewith others such as Great Ormond Streetand Alder Hey in Liverpool. We alsoaspire to develop a Ronald McDonaldHouse in the foreseeable future.

As well as a dedicated team of paediatricdoctors and nurses, support is provided bydieticians, physiotherapists, play specialistsand a schoolteacher. A suite of roomssleeping two each with en-suite facilities iscentrally located to allow parents to stayclose to their children while they are beingcared for in the Children’s Intensive Careand Neonatal Units.

The Imaging Directorate atUHNM is the fourth largestservice in the country,employing more than 500staff including 48consultants, 20 specialistregistrars, 20 members ofnursing staff and 170radiographers.

Using state-of-the-artimaging equipment itprovides a comprehensivediagnostic andinterventional radiologicalservice to all specialitieswithin the Trust and tertiarycatchment, completing morethan 500,000 examinationsin 2014 and achievingImaging ServicesAccreditation Schemestandards.

The imaging facilities are almost allbased within the main hospitalcomplex on the Royal Stoke UniversityHospital site and at the CountyHospital in Stafford, with smallerdepartments situated within thePotteries conurbation.

The department at the Royal Stokeincludes inpatient and outpatientaccommodation for imaging, whilefive community hospitals contribute toplain film and ultrasound serviceslinked by electronic image transfer(PACS) to the main departments.

The Directorate undertakes severalexaminations as a specialist centrewithin the region, including CardiacMRI, CTC and Endoanal Ultrasound, aswell as being the hub for complexVascular Interventional procedures.

The Outpatient Directorate isresponsible for the management,administration and provision of nursingcare in all medical and surgical clinics atthe Royal Stoke and County Hospitals.

With 109 consulting, 47 specialist, ninetreatment and seven counselling roomsall situated on the ground and firstfloors of the main building, the RoyalStoke sees more than 600,000 patientseach year.

In addition to these rooms, there aretwo other areas of Neurophysiologyand the Emergency Eye Clinic.

County Hospital sees 150,000 patientsper year and currently has 34outpatient clinic rooms, which willsoon be undergoing a fullrefurbishment.

The Directorate employs a total of 130administrative staff and 58 nurses andnursing assistants who deliver highquality care to patients.

A range of training and developmentopportunities are available for staff,including NVQ and aspiringprogrammes, degree pathways andcustomer care training.

ABOUT THE CHILDREN’S, WOMEN’S & DIAGNOSTICS DIVISION

With more than 450 staff theObstetrics & Gynaecology Directorateprovides elective and emergencyinpatient, outpatient, and ambulatorycare for women of NorthStaffordshire and surrounding areasacross both hospital sites.

22 Consultants are supported byJunior Doctors in training, AdvancedNurse Practitioners and Clinical NurseSpecialists Administrative and Clericalstaff.

Our Gynaecology departmentprovides a range of sub-specialtiesincluding Gynaecological Oncology,Urodynamics and we are anaccredited Severe EndometriosisCentre.

All major and complex surgery takesplace at Royal Stoke where womenare cared for on a refurbished surgicalward.

Outpatients diagnostic and day casesurgery are offered on both hospitalsites providing women with theoption of having their care providedcloser to home.

We have opened communitygynaecology ‘one stop’ clinics which

has reduced the need for women toattend main hospital sites.

Maternity service moved into theMaternity Centre at Royal Stoke inApril 2009 and from here we providea full range of obstetric and midwifecare.

At the County Hospital we offeroutpatient and day case surgery, andprovide the option to deliver in a freestanding midwife birth centre.

Our Maternity services in NorthStaffordshire & surrounding areasdeliver 7,000 deliveries babies per

annum. We are one of the largestmaternity units in the UK whichmeans staff can specialise in a rangeof tertiary services not available atsmaller units.

The service achieved CNST level 3 in2013 and achieved 49 of the 50standards making it one of thehighest assessed maternity services in the country.

Obstetrics and Gynaecology Directorate

Clinical Technology Directorate

The Directorate of Clinical Technologyprovides a comprehensive medicalequipment management and maintenanceservice to the University Hospitals of NorthMidlands and external healthcare bodies.Based at both the Royal Stoke UniversityHospital and County Hospital sites,multidisciplinary teams provide servicesacross the organisation and to other localhealthcare providers.

With 44 highly skilled engineers andtechnologists, the Directorate operatesfrom workshops and offices at both sites,some of which are located alongside keyclinical services such as theatres, renaland intensive care. Staff are employed inboth support and technical roles,including administration, data quality,team managers and various grades ofhealthcare scientists.

More than 60,000 jobs are undertaken bythe Directorate each year, providing acomprehensive equipment managementservice, ensuring that medical equipmentowned by the Trust is safe and availablefor use.

The Directorate consists ofthe following teamsoperating across bothUHNM sites and in thelocal and widerhealthcare economy:

Medical: providessupport to generalmedical equipment acrossall areas and specialities.

Critical Care: specialisttechnicians are embedded in Intensive Care Unit areas.

Renal: a dedicated teamsupporting the renal unit and home-patients.

Imaging: supporting Trust-wide imaging services.

Medical Gas and MechanicalWorkshops: support oxygen therapyequipment and provide mechanicalengineering service to the departmentand the Trust.

There are opportunities to develop byundertaking a part-time foundation degreealongside a work-based competencyprogramme in order to achieve practitionerlevel Healthcare Scientist status.

The role of the Pharmacy Directorate is to support the safe and effective useof medicines for all our patients.

The Directorate, which has facilities atboth the Royal Stoke and County sites,employs around 250 staff in rolesincluding pharmacists, technicians,pharmacy support workers, porters andclerical and administrative staff,

The Directorate also hosts a teamresponsible for the roll out of theElectronic Prescribing and Administration(ePMA) system in the Trust.

Each year,over 700,000 items are dispensed topatients and the Pharmacy Procurementteam purchase drugs to the value ofmore than £30 million.

The dispensary at the Royal Stoke sitehas a state-of-the-art robotic dispensingsystem and a licensed asepticmanufacturing unit that produceshighly specialised medicines, includingcytotoxic (chemotherapy) infusions andparenteral nutrition feeds.

For the last two years, teams from thedirectorate have been finalists in theHealth Service Journal awards in theWorkforce Efficiency and Outsourcingcategories.

Each year, the Directorate take on pre-registration pharmacists andtechnicians, and a range of training anddevelopment opportunities areavailable – including a Step Trainingprogramme for junior pharmacists aswell as e-Learning training packages.

With a dedicated workforce ofaround 440 staff including 20Consultant Pathologists, ChemicalPathologists and Microbiologists,the Directorate of Pathologyprovides a comprehensive diagnosticand treatment monitoring servicethroughout the West Midlands.

Cutting-edge technology is used tosupport and deliver services to itsusers and results are reported viasecure electronic links. TheDirectorate analyses more thanthree million samples per year,which equates to 20 million tests,making it one of the largestPathology providers in the country.

The new facilities based at the RoyalStoke University Hospital include anexcellent purpose built laboratorywhich sits alongside other clinicalservices, multidisciplinary meetingrooms and a new mortuary.

The Directorate comprises of thefollowing departments:

Cytology

Haematology and Blood Transfusion

Clinical Biochemistry

Histopathology

Microbiology(Bacteriology and Virology)

Immunology

Mortuary

Haematology, Immunology andClinical Biochemistry operate as acombined Blood Sciences laboratory,with around 110 technical, clericaland medical staff working togetherto process more than 2.5 millionsamples per year. Incidentally theBlood Sciences laboratory was onlythe second in the UK to install aSiemens Aptio automation track.

All departments hold ClinicalPathology Accreditation (CPA) andare working towards UnitedKingdom Accreditation Service(UKAS) accreditation. Pathologyundertakes active research underthe leadership and direction ofProfessor Tony Fryer.

The Directorate undertakes andoperates patient facing services,examples of which includePhlebotomy, and Anti-coagulantManagement.

Bereavement Services

There is a dedicated team ofBereavement Officers on both RoyalStoke and County Hospital sites.

Sadly some patients are at the end oftheir lives, and all our staff do theirvery best to make them as comfortableas possible, and provide emotional

support at a difficult time. But ourwork doesn’t end there.

When a patient dies, our BereavementServices Team steps in to support andoffer guidance to families and friendswith the inevitable practical issuessurrounding a death.
