Mr Charles Odere

UHOA General Secretary

Mr Ismail Sekandi

UHOA Executive Director

Mr Patrick Bitature

UHOA Treasurer

Welcome to the latest edition of the UHOA Uganda Hotel

Guide. I am proud to report that our particular sector of the

economy continues to grow, with more new hotels and ad-

ditional bed capacity, not only in Kampala but throughout

the entire country.

Increasingly, Uganda is seen as an attractive tourism destination;

and we are fortunate that our beautiful country has so much to

offer visitors. Uganda is a country gifted by nature, the Pearl of

Africa – famed for its gorilla trekking in the Bwindi Impenetrable

National Park and Mgahinga National Park as well as for activities

such as birdwatching, bungee jumping, fi shing, mountaineering,

rafting and many more. Then there is the source of the Nile at

Jinja, a growing destination, as well as vacations at Lake Victoria,

where the Ssese Islands are a draw for those seeking peace and

relaxation in an away-from-it-all location.

INVESTMENT

There has been heavy investment in the tourism sector, ranging

from improved infrastructure to hotels and attractions.

Uganda’s gateway to the world, Entebbe Airport, has been

enhanced to cater for our many visitors and we have major new

hotel projects under way to add to an already comprehensive

choice for visitors using this attractive gateway town as a base for

overnight stops when arriving or departing. Entebbe is also a key

venue for local and international conferences and seminars.

It is Kampala, however, that remains the jewel in the crown, with

many large and highly respected global institutions choosing

our capital city for their gatherings, meetings, conferences and

accommodation. We are fortunate that we now have the facilities

and correct quality of hotels to cater for such events, thanks to

the government’s efforts to encourage investment in this sector.

Clearly, both Kampala and Uganda are on track to be one of

Africa’s truly great destinations.

STEADY RISE IN QUALITY AND CHOICE IS TRUMP CARD FOR HOTEL SECTOR

In the past few years, Kampala has emerged as a major

business and international conference centre – the venue of

choice for some of Africa’s biggest events and gatherings.

The city is also the driving force behind Uganda’s fast-grow-

ing economy and the quality of its hotel accommodation

now refl ects this situation.

Originally propelled by a government desire to see more than

enough bed capacity to accommodate those attending the 2007

Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, Kampala is now

a match for any large African city in the range and diversity of its

hotels – from the top-end Kampala Serena and Kampala Sheraton,

through fi rst-class business properties such as the Protea Kampala,

to delightful boutique offerings such as the Emin Pasha, to inter-

esting and charming places like Le Petit Village and Mamba Point

Guest House.

Fresh properties still keep coming on to the market. New to the

mix, and likely to cause a stir at the deluxe end of the market, is

the fi ve-star Hilton Kampala Hotel, scheduled for completion in

2011. Set in 14 acres on top of Nakasero Hill, the hotel has 272

rooms, including 37 suites.

NEW PROPERTIES

Entebbe, too, has its fair share of new properties, geared mostly

to ‘overnighters’ arriving late from or leaving early for the nearby

international airport, but also convenient for those using the town

as a base for wider visits around Uganda. Owing to its easy air

access – and the fact that Kampala is about 45 km from the airport

– Entebbe is also a popular regional conference and seminar venue.

The 100-room Laico Lake Victoria Entebbe Hotel stands out as an

attractive place to stay, but will face competition from the new

Page 9: Uganda Hotel Guide 2011

5

Protea Entebbe, which is being built as close as possible to the

airport terminal. The Imperial Hotels Group also has two large

properties in the town; and there is plenty of choice in terms of

small hotels and guesthouses. Some of these, such as the Airport

View Hotel, set very high standards indeed.

Just down the road, the Lake Victoria Serena Resort, opened

in 2009, is probably the fi rst property of its kind in Uganda – a

weekend lakeside golf resort. Convenient for Entebbe Airport, it is

really targeted at other markets, particularly the romantic weekend

retreat and the out-of-town conference and seminar sector.

Located just off the Kampala-Entebbe highway, the new resort has

splendid views over Lake Victoria.

STYLE AND ELEGANCE

In Jinja, the renovated colonial house Gately on Nile reopened in

2000 and has grown from four to 21 rooms and sits on the edge

of Lake Victoria. This property has revived an almost forgotten level

of elegance and style in a homely and simple setting. Meanwhile,

the recently expanded Jinja Nile Resort continues to lead the way

in the conference and seminar sector on its side of Kampala.

In contrast to the

heady pace of

property building

elsewhere, activity in

and around Uganda’s

principal game parks

has been more

restrained, with only a small number of new developments. In

this context, the highlight of 2010 was the opening in July of the

fi ve-star Chobe Lodge in Murchison Falls National Park. Elsewhere,

new developments continue to take place in Bwindi Impenetrable

National Park and in Fort Portal, gateway to the snow-capped

Rwenzoris, the third-highest peaks in Africa, as well in and around

Lake Bunyonyi and now on islands in the River Nile.

Today, apart from a few isolated rural areas, visitors can be sure

of fi nding good quality accommodation both in Kampala and

elsewhere in the country – a sharp contrast with just fi ve years

ago. But, whatever type of accommodation visitors choose, from

fi ve-star deluxe to modest guesthouse, they can always be assured

of high standards and a warm welcome.

Page 10: Uganda Hotel Guide 2011

More and more people are recognising Uganda as an up-

coming safari destination as the country seeks to rebuild its

reputation for serious game viewing. Years of internal con-

fl ict, and then ongoing concerns over security, left many of

the nation’s game parks little visited and in poor condition,

with tourists unable to get more than a fl eeting glimpse of

the animals. Some parks also suffered from a lack of accom-

modation and tourist facilities as well as poor access.

Thankfully, this is all changing and Uganda is on track to put things

right. But it’s a slow process that will take many years and will

involve strenuous efforts by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA)

and its many foreign supporters and backers.

Uganda has 10 widely varied national parks, some of which

contain animal species rarely found elsewhere in Africa. Its national

parks contain elephant and lion but also rare and endemic ante-

lope. Uganda is still one of the world’s premier destinations for

birdwatching safaris and has several endemic species.

The nation’s two best-known national parks are traditional areas of

East African open savannah grassland: the 3,840 sq km Murchison

Falls National Park, in the north-west, easily the nation’s largest,

and the smaller 1,978 sq km Queen Elizabeth National Park, in the

west, bordering Lake Edward. Both provide fi ne settings in which

to view wildlife in an uncrowded environment.

VARIETY

In addition to it two main parks, Uganda is surprisingly well blessed

in terms of the variety of its national parks, all of which have now

largely recovered from the widespread poaching of the 1980s and

1990s. These are:

• The little visited but truly spectacular Kidepo Valley National Park,

close to the borders of Kenya and Sudan and over 700 km from

Kampala. This 1,442 sq km park has accommodation, including

a smart lodge, self-catering bandas and chalets, so visitors are

advised to bring their own food and supplies. It is certainly worth

the effort to get there, however. The park has a surprisingly wide

6

Na ti on a l Pa rks a n d Wi ld l i fe

DIVERSITY IS THE KEY AS UGANDA’S WILDLIFE PARKS GET BACK ON TRACK

Page 11: Uganda Hotel Guide 2011

range of animals and bird species including fi ve primates, of which

the Kavirondo bush baby is endemic. Unfortunately, the park’s

beisa oryx and roan populations have been hard hit by poachers.

But a study in the 1970s identifi ed up to 80 species resident in the

park, of which 28 were not found elsewhere in Uganda.

• The 1,145 sq km Mount Elgon National Park straddles the

Uganda-Kenya border and includes the 4,321 metre Mount Elgon,

an extinct volcano. The park is popular with hikers and hill walkers.

It contains small antelope and a wide variety of bird species.

• The 776 sq km Kibale National Park is home to no fewer than 13

species of primate and is famed for its habituated chimpanzees.

• The 220 sq km Semliki National Park is located in the remote

west of Uganda on the border with the Democratic Republic of

Congo. Considered the only real jungle in East Africa, it offers fi ne

scenery and great opportunities for primate viewing.

• The 998 sq km Rwenzori Mountains National Park contains

the legendary Mountains of the Moon and Africa’s third-highest

mountain. Excellent for hill walking and climbing – and visitors

enjoy good facilities.

• The 260 sq km Lake Mburo National Park contains fi ve lakes and

is the best place in Uganda to view eland.

Uganda’s trump card, however, is represented by two small parks

inhabited by the endangered mountain gorilla, largest of the

living primates. These are Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.

HABITUATED

There are just fi ve habituated gorilla groups: four in Bwindi, which

has 11 species of primate in all, and one in the tiny 33.7 sq km

Mgahinga. Each day, 32 gorilla trekking permits are issued. These

are divided into parties of eight, with three groups going to Bwindi

and one to Mgahinga. These permits cost US$500 per person per

day and must be booked well in advance.

Compared with neighbouring

Rwanda, viewing gorillas in

Uganda is more diffi cult and

requires greater effort. For many

visitors this only adds to the

sense of wonder when gorillas

are fi nally sighted. It can be a

life-changing experience.

7

Page 12: Uganda Hotel Guide 2011

Uganda may not quite rival some other African destina-

tions in terms of its golf courses; yet visiting golfers are in for

a pleasant surprise, as the country serves up some real treats.

The jewel in Uganda’s golfi ng crown is without doubt the 18-hole

Uganda Golf Course. Located in the heart of Kampala, this is the

nation’s premier club. Established over 100 years ago, the course

is deceptively diffi cult, with many narrow, tree-lined fairways. The

15th is particularly tough, calling for a good drive, then an accu-

rate approach shot to the green, which has trees on both sides.

Golfers can enjoy a welcome break at the 10th tee, which has its

own café and provides a vantage point to watch those playing the

par-3 ninth. A warm welcome awaits at the clubhouse, with good

food and inexpensive beer.

The country’s other 18-hole course is at Entebbe. Established with

just nine holes in 1905, this is East Africa’s oldest course, pre-

dating Kenya’s Royal Nairobi by one year. Both caddies and green

fees are well priced; and, with just 150 full members, it is always

easy to obtain a tee time, even on a Saturday morning.

The 6,441-yard course is mostly open parkland and the venerable

clubhouse is the original Edwardian building.

RESORT COURSE

Jinja has a nine-hole course and is, in many ways, under utilised.

Playing the nine holes twice from different tees, the par-72 course

is 6,481 yards. The course is in reasonably good condition.

Scheduled for completion in 2011 is a new 7,350-yard, par-72

course at the Serena Lake Victoria Resort. As its name suggests,

the golf course is being laid out on the shores of Lake Victoria.

There are golf courses, too, in Fort Portal (the Toro Club), Tororo,

Arua, Mbarara, Masindi, Kabale and Kasese.

with last orders taken at 10 pm.

For a relaxed get-together or a casual drink with colleagues, the
