precious in comparison to present day, usuallyworthless pictures of blurfos or ‘chance UFOs’.Moreover, it is probably the first classic ‘flyingsaucer’ photographed in Poland – the thingevolution of UFO phenomenon vision in societymade even rarest.

Flying Saucer from MuszynaThe author of the 1958 photo was Dr StanisławKowalczewski from Warsaw. He took it duringthe Christmas break, on 22nd December inMuszyna – a popular mountain resort, near theborder with present Slovakia. After returninghome he sent a letter with a description of thestrange experience, to two capital citynewspapers.

Here is his report on the event: “I spentChristmas in 1958 on a two-week vacation inMuszyna near Krynica [today in małopolskievoivodeship]. At first the weather was fatal – forthree days in row it was dark and the rain wasfalling. On the fourth day, i.e. December 22nd,the sun appeared. At about 3pm, while I waslooking through the window toward the RiverPoprad Valley, I suddenly noticed a yellow-orange coloured cloud directly opposite thewindow. I thought it great since it gave me aunique chance to get a very good photo of the

Tough start and first photosThe list of sightings that occurred in theopening years of contemporary UFO era is alsoquite long. During the settlement of socialism inPeople’s Republic of Poland in 1950’s, severalinteresting incidents took place, peaking in theenigmatic and still debated alleged Gdynia UFOcrash in 1959.

From the same period came the earliestPolish UFO photos. The very first one was takenin Gdansk Bay on the Baltic Sea in 1957. Theauthor of the photo, Mr S. Rzynkowski wassailing in his boat when he noticed somestrange, brilliant clouds shining with orangelight. He decided to make use of his cameraand when the photo was developed it turnedout that some unidentified dark objects werevisible low over the sea. Reproduction of thisphoto was published in 1959 in ‘WieczórWybrzeża’ (‘The Shore Evening’) – the samenewspaper that wrote several reports aboutport workers witnessing the fall of a strangeobject to Gdynia basin in January 1959.

But some time earlier, a very interestingphoto was taken in Muszyna. It is one of themost interesting examples of the eyewitnessUFO sighting, connected with taking thephotographical proof – cases very rare and

area. […] I focused the camera on Poprad Riverand the mountain in the background.Unfortunately there was a pole standing thereand it appeared in the centre of the photo. Ittook a little time, then, suddenly some kind ofyellow-orange ‘sun’ appeared from behind theclouds. Seeing it, I immediately captured thescene but regretted in thoughts that the photowould be failed.

But then, I began to observe that the ‘sun’was quickly moving towards a cloud located upacross from it. My attention was drawn to astrange hue of that object. Usually the settingsun is much more red and bigger. At aparticular moment, my wife interrupted theobservation saying: “The sun has appeared. Let’sgo for a walk.” When she noticed my lingering, she hurried me up. Seeing the strange sunsetting behind a cloud, I finally turned back andleft the room.

Anyway, I was very surprised seeing the realsun on the hotel yard. It was located on theright from the previous one and moreover itwasn’t setting at all. So what was thephenomenon I had seen and photographedbefore? Unfortunately the orange clouddisappeared and only the real sun, shininghappily over the land was visible at that time. So

REMINISCENCES FROMPEOPLE’S REPUBLICOF POLAND:PHOTOGRAPHIC CASESIt’s hard to tell when Polish UFO history began. If someone believes in theufological notion that the old chroniclers’ accounts describes the same objectsthat people of 20th century called ‘the flying saucers’, we can surely come acrosssome centuries old reports1. But first sightings of structured crafts beingundoubtedly products of someone’s technology, made their debut in the firstquarter of the century2 while around 1927 and then in 1943, two first Polish closeencounters of the third kind took place. 3

the sun but fortunately he managed to snap aphoto of that strange phenomenon. Anyway,he was surprised to find that on the photo theobject was in a different shape from that he hadseen with his own eyes. After returning toWarsaw, he wrote a letter to ‘Stolica’ (‘The CapitalCity’) magazine and the editors sent requests tosome specialist. Soon an opinion of KazimierzZaleski – one of first Polish ufologists appearedin the mentioned magazine saying that “with 99percent of certainty, I can say that the photodepicts a flying saucer, since it is very similar toother ones from abroad. It is plain that theobject was emitting its own light, since in theopposite case it couldn’t appear on the photoas a uniform dark stain of rounded edges.”5

Some time before opinion of Zaleski ‘ŻycieWarszawy’ (‘Warsaw’s Life’) publishedKowalczewski’s report, along with opinions oftwo photo experts who analysed the originalfilm, they excluded the fake but were unable toanswer the question, why the thing thatseemed to be a luminous sphere appeared onthe photo as a black saucer.

Muszyna UFO photo remains one of theearliest but equally important Polish UFOphotos in comparison to what the next yearsbrought to the subject.

what was that yellow sphere? Walking the lane along the railway, I

reminded myself that in the last issue of‘Dookoła świata’ (‘Around the World’) magazinethere was an article about something like a‘flying saucer’ and an interview with a villagewoman who claimed to observe a ‘big ball’. Thething I saw also reminded me of a ball, but wasslightly flattened. So was it a flying saucer? Tocheck this I had to get this photo developed.[…] I got it four days later and was surprised tosee a strange flattened oval shadow over thehorizon, with some bulge in the upper part, hovering directly in the place where the strangephenomenon was seen.

I said to my wife on the way back from thephoto shop, that the strange shadow was surelya flying saucer seen on that day, but sheremarked that it was only a stain.

But my opinion was different. It surely wasn’ta stain. I remember the situation very well, butwhy did the light object appear on the photoas a dark one? That riddle needed to be solved. Iwas too shocked by the phenomenon to keepsilent. It was some kind of inner upset.4

According to the witness account, DrKowalczewski saw from his hotel room astrange luminous object, that he mistook for

In the meantime there was aflap! After the Muszyna photo, there was a littledepression in Polish photographic cases. Oneother picture with an alleged UFO wassnatched in 1959 and was deemed to be thefirst colour one. But even the cursory analysis ofthe blurred dark dot over the flooded area inWyszków brings to mind the possibility that itmay be only a photographic fault.

After that, we can find a mention of onephoto taken in early 1960’s in Warsaw but then avery long, almost two decades long break tookplace. It doesn’t mean that nothing was seen orphotographed in this time but there are not anyvery well known cases. But the absence of UFOcrafts willing to being photographed wasreplaced by something even better – the UFOwave from the turn of 70’s and 80’s with themost famous Jan Wolski encounter in Emilcin.

This strange flap of very intriguing CE-3 andother sightings lasted several years. It wasopened by a strange incident when a militia-officer on duty, encountered on a Februarynight in 1978, a strange black cylindrical craft inSilesia region (southwestern Poland). In May thefamous case of Jan Wolski took place in Emilcin. The witness, a humble farmer, was allegedly

taken onboard a UFO craft by strange beingswith olive-colour faces, dressed in black‘swimsuits’.6 Similar beings were thenencountered in the same year in Przyrownicaand Golina7 in Central Poland in September1978. Somewhat earlier, some strange aerialphenomenon left a pattern of scorched grass inMłynek. In the next year, a man encounteredbizarre humanoids in Człuchów and in 1981 anartist was taken onboard a UFO trip on HelPeninsula8. But these are only a few UFOsightings from this very interesting period.

One of the first emerging photos after such along break was allegedly taken by WitoldWawrzonek – a man involved in discovery ofthe Jan Wolski case. The photo taken in 1977seems to depict a ball-like objectphotographed in daylight in Lublin (and it isalso somewhat controversial). In terms of UFOphotos, from the late 70’s onward we deal withmany cases, with most of them being classifiedas a daylight disc, additionally seen byeyewitnesses.

Wicie incidentOne of the most interesting cases took place inthe first part of the groundbreaking era of 80’s.It bore some resemblance with the Muszynacase, since the object was also seen by avacationer in a resort, but this time in theopposite corner of Poland. The UFO itself wasalso somewhat similar to that seen by DrKowalczewski but the sighting was muchlonger and the object was observed by manyeyewitnesses. The author of this photo was MrWiesław Machowski from Zabrze. It was takenon September 3rd 1983 in Wicie in the northernpart of the country. We can see on it, a hat-shaped object resembling a classical flyingsaucer, surrounded by some kind of a glow. On

that day vacationers located in a resort nearKopań Lake saw a strange object hovering inthe cloudless sky. It was in a form of a sphericalluminous object located high in the sky.

The most interesting aspect of this sightingwas that the witnesses noticed a smaller lightthat was emanating from a bigger object andlowering toward the ground but withouttouching the water surface. It was then risingup and ‘returning’ to the big object. The sightinglasted about 120 minutes. Unfortunately, theoriginal film was lost and nothing is knownabout it.

Toward the new eraIt can be said that the most interestingphotographic UFO cases from Poland arematter of past. Today, we are dealing mostlywith digital photos with blurred pictures ofchance unseen UFOs. But it can be said that thetendency of photographing ‘invisible UFOs’began much earlier.

smudge hovering lonely over grey meadow…In 1989, a great change took place in Poland

and then even UFO sightings altered. Black andwhite photos were then replaced by colourand then by digital. Flying saucers gave placeto other kinds of UFO encounters as flyingballs, triangles and other forms. Some werehappy seeing a classical saucer with antennaeon its top in a night photo taken over Rzeszówin 2004. But as it turned out, the hopes ofsaucers return were premature. It was just anoptical illusion…

1 Medieval Polish UFO sightings were described for example inJ.Podralski article “UFO in medieval times” in Głos Szczecińskinewspaper (1979).

2 Book of K.Piechota and B.Rzepecki “UFO nad Polską” listed circa16 pre 1947 cases from XX c. and in total more than 70 casesthat took place before the new opening of UFO era.

3 The following were Ujazd (1926/7) and Nowiny (c. 1943) cases,in both the witnesses saw a being or beings in vicinity of UFOcrafts.

4 The reprint of Kowalczewski’s account appeared for example inB.Rzepecki and K.Piechota book “UFO nad Polską” (1995).

5 The expertise appeared in “Stolica”, #9 1959.

6 The incident was researched by many ufologists but the mostreliable research was done by Zbigniew Blania – Bolnar whothen described the affair in „Zdarzenie w Emilcinie” book. Heconcluded that the witness, 78-year-old Jan Wolski wasn’tconfabulating but it was hard to tell exactly what he saw(although he wasn’t the only witness).

7 Przyrownica and Golina cases took place on 26th and 27th

September 1978. In the first, a group of school children noticeda strange being in the forest that resembled entities seen byWolski. Z. Blania – Bolnar concluded that children made up thestory based on information from Emilcin. The Golina caseinvolved a close encounter with similar beings, met by a manwho was picking mushrooms.

8 The case that took place in 1981 involved another encounterwith entities similar to those seen by Wolski in 1978.

9 The case was described initially in”Tygodnik Radomski” (1987).

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:Piotr Cielebiaś - (born inCzęstochowa in 1986) isa historian, author, publisher and translator, interested mainly insocial and historical

website, especially interested inanomalous zones and UFO phenomenon.

One of the most often reproduced PolishUFO pictures presents a very strange scene. Wecan see a child in a baby carriage and a hugestrange flying saucer hanging in mid-air. It wastaken in Radom area on June 28th 19879. Theauthor, P.R. stated that he hadn’t seen theobject, and looking at the perspective we canassume that it was in close vicinity to witnesses. This photo stirred a debate amongst the UFOcommunity. Some claimed that the object istoo symmetric to be a bird or another flyingcreature, and took attention to its verystructured nature resembling a classic flyingsaucer. Anyway, the analysis of the materialraised the possibility that it is just a photo fault.Although the Radom ‘baby carriage UFO’ photois controversial, sometimes it stands as a symbolof a very elusive nature of those objects…

In 1988, another photo of a flying disc wastaken in Włocławek area. The witnesses said thatthey observed the shining UFO with naked eyesand then binoculars. On another black andwhite photo, from the ending period of People’sRepublic of Poland, we can see only a blurred
