Head coachJosep GuardiolaDate of birth: 18 January 1971Nationality: SpanishPlaying career: Barcelona, Brescia (twice), Roma, Al-Ahly Club, Dorados de SinolaCoaching career: Barcelona B, Barcelona, Bayern München, Manchester City

• Known as 'Pep', he came up through Barcelona's youth ranks to win six Spanish Liga titles, one EuropeanChampion Clubs' Cup, a UEFA Cup Winners' Cup and two Copa del Rey trophies from 1990 to 2001. Also had spellswith Brescia, Roma, al-Ahly in Doha and Mexico's Dorados de Sinola before ending his playing career in 2006. Won47 caps and Olympic footballing gold with Spain in 1992, but missed the 1998 and 2002 FIFA World Cups throughinjury.

• Having coached Barcelona's B team, he took charge of the senior side in 2008 and won the UEFA ChampionsLeague, Spanish Liga and Copa del Rey in his first season. That was just the beginning of a glorious four-seasonspell which yielded 14 trophies. In his second campaign, Guardiola steered Barcelona to a second Liga title as well asthe Spanish and UEFA Super Cups and the FIFA Club World Cup. Even more sucess followed in 2010/11 asBarcelona completed a hat-trick of Spanish titles and, for the second time under Guardiola, got the better ofManchester United in the UEFA Champions League final.

• In his final season, 2011/12, Guardiola's team won the UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup once morebefore he signed off his reign with a second Copa del Rey triumph. After a year's break, Guardiola took charge ofBayern in June 2013, replacing Jupp Heynckes.

• Collected the UEFA Super Cup, FIFA Club World Cup, German Cup and, with a record seven games to spare, theBundesliga title in his first season in Germany. Secured his second successive Bundesliga title the following season, and Bayern again dominated domestically in 2015/16, but all three of Guardiola's UEFA Champions Leaguecampaigns in Bavaria ended in the semi-finals.

• Opted for a new challenge at Manchester City in summer 2016 and, though the first year in charge producedGuardiola's first trophy-less campaign as a coach, he and City delivered in style in 2017/18, racking up 100 points inwinning the Premier League and adding the English League Cup; the following season, City became the first Englishclub to win the domestic treble of league – holding off a remarkable Liverpool effort – FA Cup and League Cup.

Rudi GarciaDate of birth: 20 February 1964Nationality: FrenchPlaying career: LOSC Lille, Caen, Martigues Coaching career: Corbeil-Essonnes (player-coach), St-Étienne, Dijon, Le Mans, LOSC Lille, Roma, Marseille, Lyon

• The son of former LOSC player José Garcia, Rudi grew up in the Paris suburbs but started his playing career as anattacking midfielder at his father's old club. Spent six years with Les Dogues, going on to Caen (1988-91) andMartigues (1991-92) before injury prompted a move into coaching.

• Having completed a sports science degree, started out as a player-coach at amateur side Corbeil-Essonnes, whomhe had represented as a youngster; did well enough to be offered a job as assistant coach at St-Étienne in 1998. Aftera brief spell as head coach in tandem with Jean-Guy Wallemme, Garcia re-emerged at the helm of Dijon in 2002,winning promotion to Ligue 2 in 2003/04 and taking the club to the French Cup semi-finals. Returned to Ligue 1 in2007 with Le Mans, who he led to ninth place in his only season.

• Brought to LOSC as Claude Puel's successor in 2008, he briefly left after a fifth-placed finish in his first season onlyto reconsider. He led his side to victory in the Coupe de France in May 2011, their first win in the competition since1955, before completing a domestic double a week later, LOSC's first league title in 57 years.

• Appointed at Roma in June 2013 and oversaw wins in his first ten league matches, the best ever start to Serie A.Eventually finished second, earning a UEFA Champions League place for the first time since 2010, and Roma againfinished second in 2015, before Garcia was dismissed the following January.

• Took over at Marseille in October 2016, taking the club to the 2017/18 UEFA Europa League final in Lyon, butAtlético Madrid proved too strong. Garcia left OM in May 2019 and, five months later, was appointed Lyon coach afterSylvinho's brief reign.

Competition factsUEFA Champions League: Did you know?Overall records• In 2016/17 Real Madrid became the first team to successfully defend the UEFA Champions League trophy, with ACMilan (1989, 1990) the previous club to win consecutive European Cups. Milan (1994, 1995), Ajax (1995, 1996),Juventus (1996, 1997) and Manchester United (2008, 2009) have all returned to the UEFA Champions League finalas holders only to lose.

• Real Madrid then made it three wins in a row in 2017/18, becoming the fourth club to win three or more successivetitles in European Cup history, and the first to do it twice.

• Only two teams have ever won the UEFA Champions League on home soil: Borussia Dortmund (1997, final inMunich) and Juventus (1996, final in Rome), while Manchester United lost the 2011 final in London and 12 monthslater Bayern were beaten in the showpiece in their own stadium, the Fußball Arena München.

Knockout stage• In 2019/20 Real Madrid qualified for the UEFA Champions League knockout phase for a record 24th time, including23 in succession. They have also played a competition-high 99 knockout phase matches – ahead of Barcelona (94)and Bayern München (93).

• In all, 30 ties have required extra time. Fourteen have been settled by extra time alone: six round of 16 encountersincluding Atlético-Liverpool in 2019/20, five quarter-finals, the 2007/08 semi-final between Chelsea and Liverpool, andthe 2013/14 final between Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid.

• Sixteen ties have gone to penalties, including seven finals – 1996, 2001, 2003, 2005, 2008, 2012 and 2016. The firsttwo-legged tie decided on spot kicks was PSV Eindhoven's 4-2 victory over Lyon on 13 April 2005 after a 2-2aggregate draw, still the only quarter-final to go to penalties. Bayern, Chelsea and Atlético Madrid have all appearedin three shoot-outs, sharing the competition record, with Bayern, Atlético and Liverpool having won the most (twoapiece).
