Match backgroundAfter a draw in Cyprus that did little good to either Borussia Dortmund or APOEL FC's hopes of progressing fromGroup H, the teams meet again in Germany knowing time is fast running out to get back into contention.

• The 1-1 draw in Nicosia at least got both sides off the mark after two defeats apiece, but with Real Madrid CF andTottenham Hotspur FC six points ahead in the standings, nothing less than a win will do for either club at the BVBStadion Dortmund.

• Neither team will be able to finish in the top two if they lose this game.

Match backgroundDortmund• This is Dortmund's first home match against opponents from Cyprus.

• Dortmund, contesting the group stage for the 12th time and a sixth in seven years, have reached the knockout stageon their last four UEFA Champions League appearances. In 2016/17 they beat SL Benfica 4-1 on aggregate in theround of 16, subsequently losing 6-3 to Monaco over two legs (2-3 home, 1-3 away).

• That home defeat by Monaco ended Dortmund's seven-match unbeaten home run in Europe (W5 D2); they werealso beaten 3-1 by Real Madrid in Germany on matchday two.

• Dortmund scooped seven points at home in last season's group stage, overcoming Sporting Clube de Portugal 1-0and Legia Warszawa 8-4 – the latter providing the most goals in a UEFA Champions League match.

• BVB have won only one of their last eight European games (D2 L5) and had lost four in a row prior to matchdaythree.

APOEL• This is APOEL's ninth away match against German opponents. They have lost seven of those previous fixtures, including the last two.

• The Cypriot side's sole win against a German club, home or away, came against Berliner FC Dynamo in the 1980/81European Champion Clubs' Cup first round, when they won the second leg 2-1 in Nicosia. APOEL neverthelessbowed out, having gone down 3-0 in the first game in Berlin.

• Furthermore, APOEL have avoided defeat in only three of their 16 matches against German teams; the Dortmunddraw, that Berlin success and a 1-1 draw away to FC Schalke 04 in the 2008/09 UEFA Cup first round second leg (2-5aggregate).

• APOEL's last fixtures against a Bundesliga club also came against Schalke, in the 2015/16 UEFA Europa Leaguegroup stage (0-3 home, 0-1 away).

• The Nicosia outfit have scored just two goals in away games with Bundesliga opposition, conceding 23.

• APOEL have lost six of their last eight European away fixtures, succumbing 3-0 at Real Madrid on matchday one.APOEL have never won away in 12 UEFA Champions League matches, group stage to final, though they did drawfive of their first six – before losing all of the next six.

• APOEL have not won a game in the UEFA Champions League, group stage to final, since beating OlympiqueLyonnais 1-0 in the round of 16 second leg on 7 March 2012. Their subsequent record is D2 L9.

• The Cypriot club are in the group stage for a fourth time, having previously qualified in 2009/10, 2011/12 – when theywent all the way from second qualifying round to quarter-finals, losing to Real Madrid – and 2014/15.

Head coachPeter BoszDate of birth: 21 November 1963Nationality: DutchPlaying career: SBV Vitesse, AGOVV Apeldoorn, RKC Waalwijk, SC Toulon, Feyenoord, JEF United Chiba (twice),FC Hansa Rostock, NAC Breda Coaching career: AGOVV Apeldoorn, BV De Graafschap, Heracles Almelo (twice), SBV Vitesse, Maccabi Tel-AvivFC, AFC Ajax, Borussia Dortmund

• After three-year spells at Vitesse, RKC and in France with Toulon, the midfielder's playing career took off following amove to Feyenoord in 1991; he won the Eredivisie in 1992/93 and three Dutch Cups, also picking up eight caps forthe Netherlands.

• Bosz left Rotterdam after five years, proceeding to enjoy two Japanese stints with JEF United and also appearing inthe Bundesliga for Hansa.

• Having retired in 1999 aged 36, Bosz rejoined home-town club Apeldoorn as coach, winning the national amateurchampionship in 2002. Head-coach opportunities then came with De Graafschap and Heracles – whom he led to thetop flight in 2005 – before an appointment as Feyenoord technical director in 2006.

• Returning to coaching and Heracles in 2010, he kept the club in Eredivisie mid-table safety, but eventually stooddown in 2013 and took charge of Vitesse for three years. Israel and Maccabi later came calling in January 2016, withthe chance to work under sporting director Jordi Cruyff.

• After six months in Israel, however, Bosz was back in the Netherlands, signing for Ajax. Moulding a young squadand sticking closely to the attacking, high-intensity principles laid down by Johan Cruyff, he guided theAmsterdammers to second place in the table and the UEFA Europa League final, catching the eye of Dortmund in theprocess.

Giorgos DonisDate of birth: 22 October 1969Nationality: GreekPlaying career: PAS Giannina FC, Panathinaikos FC, Blackburn Rovers FC, AEK Athens FC (twice), Sheffield UnitedFC, Huddersfield Town FCCoaching career: Iliasiakos FC, Larissa FC, AEK Athens, Atromitos FC, PAOK FC, APOEL FC (twice), Al-Hilal FC,Al-Sharjah SCC

• Frankfurt am Main-born Donis established himself as one of the finest wingers in the Greek top flight as he helpedPanathinaikos to two league titles and three domestic cups in the 1990s. He was also part of the side that reached theUEFA Champions League semi-finals in 1995/96, losing 3-1 on aggregate to AFC Ajax.

• Donis's performances for Panathinaikos, particularly in Europe, prompted a transfer to Blackburn, where he stayedfor one season before going on to represent AEK, Sheffield United and Huddersfield. He ended his playing days withAEK in 2001.

• A year after hanging up his boots, Donis moved into coaching, guiding lower-league Greek outfit Iliasiakos tosuccessive promotions. Took charge at Larissa in 2004, steering the Thessaly side into the top flight in his firstcampaign. In 2007, he presided over the club's 2-1 Greek Cup final victory against Panathinaikos.

• The following season, 2007/08, Donis oversaw Larissa's qualification for the UEFA Cup group stage. After a briefspell with AEK, Donis then moved to Atromitos, with whom he suffered Greek Cup final defeats against AEK andOlympiacos FC in 2011 and 2012 respectively.

• A short stint at PAOK was followed by his appointment in October 2013 by APOEL, whom he led to their first Cypriotdouble since 1996 and into the 2014/15 UEFA Champions League group stage.
