A slip ring is a conti-
nuity device which trans-
fers electrical current
through a continuous
rotation from a station-
ary member to a rotating
member.
There are two distinct
parts of a slip ring. One
part is the conductor
ring “core” stack and
mounting tube or shaft.
The other part is the
brushes, mounting base
and housing.
Functionally, it makes no
difference which mem-
ber is stationary and
which rotates.

The Standard Bearer for All UEA Slip RingsThe 1.50" bore slip ring is the original one ourcompetitors have tried unsuccessfully to copy. Thisslip ring is the standard by which other designs arejudged in the industrial, heavy equipment andmachinery industries.
The 1.50" bore Slip Ring has proven its worth. Itwill work in harsh conditions and environments whereother, lesser quality slip rings fail. However, in additionto the ability to handle rugged uses, the 1.50"bore slip ring has proven its superior performance intoday’s high-tech world of audio, video, data and elec-tronic signals through continuous rotation.
When your design parameters work around a 1.50"bore Slip Ring, you have entered a world ofunlimited variables and options to meet your requirements.
Design FlexibilityThe design flexibility of the 1.50" bore slip ringmakes it our most popular and versatile unit. In build-ing each slip ring, we use a modular concept thatassures the amperage and voltage combination youneed for power and/or control. Slip ring models shownin this brochure are examples of custom ringsbuilt from standard components.

Electronic Condition Circuitry
Brush TestBrush Test to comparevarious brush and ring material combinations todetermine the operating characteristics andadvantages or disadvantages of each. The brushmaterials included silver graphite and stan-dard copper graphite. The ring materials were#330 brass or coin silver. Also tested werebrushes radiused to provide 2 small contactpoints per brush (4 points per brush pair).
The test data showed that the noise generatedin a slip ring assembly will vary in direct propor-tion to the level of current through the brush toring interface. As current is increased, the volt-age drop is increased by the same proportiondue to the fixed circuit resistance. The variationalso increases by this same proportion, indicat-ing the variation in resistance of the brush toring interface.
There was very little difference in performanceof the various circuits at low current levels, butas the current was increased, the variationsbecame large enough to be a factor in materialselection. An interesting finding was that thebrush material had a much greater influence onthe performance of the circuit than the ringmaterial.
In addition to signal performance, environmentalfactors must be taken into consideration forselection of material. For example, in a hostileenvironment, a higher grade material may beneeded to reduce surface degradation. This test-ing indicated the advantages of matching materi-als and brush shape to meet specific operatingconditions.
Ring Performance TestTo evaluate ring performance with regard to pos-sible applications in the instrument class slipring market, a 15 amp circuit, 1.50" (38.1mm)bore ring was selected. Tests were designed tobring out operational parameters for determiningapplications. The test data indicated that sliprings used on instrumentation applications pro-duced highly satisfactory results.
Graph A. Brush-to-ring dynamic contact resistanceas the ring turns the first 10,000 times and typicaldynamic contact resistance for standard 0.1875"(4.8mm) wide ring and 15 amp brush pair.
Graph b. Electrical noise in millivolts caused by thebrushes sliding on ring during operation, using a 2amp load condition and 90 RPM rotational speed.Test results support many possible applications inlow-level signal transfer.
11
Graph C. Level of signal present in decibels when tworings carrying signals are separated by a commonground ring. The isolation provided is ideal for serialdata transfer and similar applications.

Position Sensors
Model S15A w/Cam & Switch
Cam & Switch
Knowing Your Rotary PositionSlip Rings are always in the center of a 360° rota-tion. Various rotary applications are improved by theability to sense a single position, multiple positions, or todefine one or more areas. This sensing of positionallows customer defined functions to operate within therequirements of each individualized application.
We offer two position sensing systems which bothprovide a high degree of accuracy. The Cam & SwitchDesign is our most popular system offering accurateperformance for up to 3 defined areas. Potentiometersare designed for use in applications requiring variableposition indication.
Both position sensing systems were conceptualized forthe 1.5" bore ring model, but either system can beadapted to our larger bore models. The Cam & SwitchDesign and the Continuous Through-bore Potentiometerare installed near the slip ring base casting and bearing, eliminating inaccuracies caused by brush and core studflexing. This also leaves the center bore open throughthe slip ring assembly for air lines, linkage, etc. The2.00" O.D. Potentiometer is mounted above the centerlead connections at the top of the assembly. This allowseasier replacement of the potentiometer if necessary.
Cam & Switch Design Features• Factory set accuracies of +– 0.5°• 1, 2, or 3 switches and areas defined using one cam• Cam and switch(es) add 0.28125" to overall height

Special Rings
Meeting the Needs for Unique ApplicationsSpecial applications often call for special slip rings.By combining standard, off-the-shelf componentsinto custom slip rings, our designs meet the designparameters and environmental conditions of theapplication. Here are some examples of special sliprings which were designed to be application specific.
Recent Special Ring requests which were builtinclude:
• High Conductor Count rings were built to handlemultiple functions
• Bore Sizes–built in conjunction with high conductor counts, these rings have bore sizes to accommodate special wiring, water hoses andhydraulic or pneumatic connections
• Unusual Environments–we have built special rings to be used in salt mines, outer space, frigidAlaskan climates and extreme desert heat
• Position Sensing–although this capability is usually provided only on smaller bore rings, wehave the capability to offer position sensing on mostslip ring models

The More We Know About Your Application, the Better We Can Customize Your Slip Ring
Slip Rings have to work in applications withwidely different types of electrical loads and datasignals, as well as in a variety of environmental andoperating conditions. Working closely with the OEMor end user, we get as much insight as possibleinto each application in order to evaluate the needsand potential problems that might arise in that par-ticular situation. Please describe the conditions ofoperation as accurately and completely as possibleso that we can supply you with a product that willperform well and meet your highest expectations.
We look at the combination of factors in order torecommend a Slip Ring for every application. For example, if a slip ring assembly is carrying lowlevel data signals, is rotating almost constantly(high duty cycle) and is used indoors, standardmaterials will perform well. On the other hand, withthe same signal in an outdoor application or in anenvironment with wide variations in temperatureand humidity, in combination with infrequent rota-tion, special materials may be needed to maintainsignal integrity.
In some manufacturing or processing facilities, cor-rosive gases may be present in the air around theslip ring. If the application requires a high dutycycle, surface oxidation will be kept scrubbed off bythe mechanical action of the brushes. However, ifthe slip ring is not being rotated through completerotations or is infrequently rotated, special materi-als would be needed to prevent surface oxidationthat could impair the function of the slip ring.
