Setting Up A WirelessAccess Point

OverviewIn thin presentation we would mainly focusing on how to change the various settings like the SSID, password etc. for a wireless access point and also how to add a few security measures like the mac filter, ip filter to our access point

What is a Computer Network

What is a Modem

•Device or program that enables a computer to transmit data•A modem converts between digital and analogue form of information.• Any external modem can be attached to any computer with a port.• Number of different protocols for formatting data to be transmitted over telephone lines exist.

What is a Router

•A device in computer networking •Forwards data packets to their destinations•Routers are located at gateways, the places where two or more networks connect.

What is a Wireless Access Point

•A device that allows wired communication devices to connect to a wireless network using Wi-Fi• Usually connects to a router, and can relay data between the wireless devices

• Make use of a wireless transmission medium• Typically restricted in their diameter: buildings,campus, single room etc..• The global goal is to replace office cabling and to introduce high flexibility for ad hoc communication•(e.g. Group meetings)

What is WLAN

• Flexibility: within radio coverage, nodes cancommunicate without further restriction. Radio waves can penetrate walls.• Planning: wireless ad hoc networks allow forcommunication without planning. Wired networksneed wiring plans.• Robustness: wireless networks can survive disasters, if the wireless devices survive people can still communicate

Advantages of WLAN

• Lower bandwidth due to limitations in radio transmission (1-10 Mbit/s) and higher error rates due to interference• Cost: Ethernet adapter vs wireless LAN adapters• Proprietary solutions: slow standardization procedureslead to many proprietary solutions only working in anhomogeneous environment• Safety and security: using radio waves for datatransmission might interfere with other high-techequipment
