This year, the UCSF Fresno Junior Doctors Academy at Caruthers Elementary and FUSD sites partnered with VA Central California Health Care System in Fresno to make over 100 valentine cards for hospitalized veterans. Students wrote thankful and profound messages honoring veterans for their service. Students completed cultural competency projects, enjoyed conversations with local medical providers, visited universities and health professional schools and began preparation for various summer programs. Additionally, they participated in volunteer opportunities and spring semester was wrapped up with an awards night for all program students. On March 6, all DA students participated in the annual Kids Day event selling Fresno Bee newspapers to raise funds for Valley Children’s Hospital in Madera. Throughout the community of Caruthers, students sold newspapers at stores, stop signs and street corners. This year’s event raised over $600,000 throughout the Central Valley and the DA students were happy make a difference through their active efforts. New efforts were made to encourage students to give back to their community through volunteer service. At the beginning of the school year, students were given the task to complete a minimum of 10 hours per semester or 20 hours per school year. In order to provide students with additional local opportu- nities, a volunteer fair was coordinated for DA students. Held on March 8 at the Caruthers High School gymna- sium, a variety of different volunteer organizations were present including Fresno Veterans Affairs Hospital, United Health Centers, Valley Animal Shelter, Fresno Community Food Bank, Fresno County Public Libraries, West Fresno Community Center, among others. Incoming seventh grade students received certificates of recognition for their accept- ance into the JDA program, current seventh grade students received a JDA engraved notebook and pen, while graduating eighth grade students along with accepted students from Alvina, Monroe and Raisin City Elementary were recognized for their acceptance into the Doctors Academy program at Caruthers High School. Graduating eighth grade students who achieved a GPA of 3.75-3.99 during their time in JDA received Academic Achievement Awards and those who achieved a GPA of 4.0 received Academic Excellence Awards. The night continued with current ninth grade students receiving their white lab coats from UCSF Fresno LaCMER Director Dr. Katherine Flores and Caruthers High Principal Mr. Mark Fowler. Tenth grade stu- dents were presented with a Doctors Academy Lapel Pin for the white lab coat and 11th grade students received a stethoscope signifying their preparation for the start of their summer clinical internships. Twelfth grade students received a bed pan representing humility and a book selected by their DA Advisor, Mr. Brandon Ward, titled ”Think Like a Warrior: The Five Inner Beliefs That Make You Unstoppable.” Seven DA students were recognized for their outstanding contribu- tions to their community via Community Service Excellence Awards, which are given to students who complete more than 75 hours of community service. Valley Health Team

On February 13,Valley HealthTeam FamilyMedicine resi-dents IvethSandoval, MD,ChinenyenwaAnugwom, MD,and RamneekKalsi, MD, visitedJDA eighth grade. Students enjoyedlearning how to use insulin monitors tomeasure blood sugar levels and prac-ticed administering epinephrine injectionsusing injection models.

Orthopedic Surgery

On March 7, Sergio Ilic, MD and his rotat-ing resident physician visited ninth gradeDA students to talk about his journey tobecoming an orthopedic surgeon. Dr. Ilicshared several orthopedic surgery tools,as well as, human bones that studentswere able to work with. He also sharedpersonal advice for students interested inpursuing a health career and the steps toachieve this dream.

LaCMER Director Visit

Dentistry

On May 14, JDA seventh grade studentswere visited by local Caruthers dentist,

Paul Hsiao, DDS, MPH, JD. Studentscompleted a medical education unit ondental health in preparation for Dr.Hsiao’s visit. Dr. Hsiao talked to studentsabout his journey to becoming a dentistand students were amazed by how heintegrated being a lawyer with being adental provider. He also reviewed theimportance of dental care and servingunderserved communities like Caruthers.

Perinatology

On May 15, JDA seventh grade and DAseniors were visited by David Abel, MD,who talked about the field of perinatol-ogy and his journey to medicine. Hereviewed fetal development and dis-cussed several real life medical caseswith the students. His interactive presen-tation and high energy kept studentsinterested and asking questions.

On April 12, Katherine Flores, MD, UCSFFresno LaCMER Director, met with JDAand DA students at CaruthersElementary and High School. She talkedto students about the history of the pro-gram and the importance of the JDA andDA program in accomplishing the goal ofdiversifying and filling the need for healthprofessionals in the San Joaquin Valley.

“Stop the Bleed”

On April 24, CRMC Trauma Center con-tinued their endeavor to provide bleedingcontrol training to the residents of theCentral Valley. They visited JDA studentsat Caruthers Elementary where nearly 50students participated in the hands ontraining and the opportunity to workclosely with local health professionals.To date, CRMC Trauma Center hastrained over 400 students, staff and par-ents from the UCSF Fresno JDA and DAprograms.

Rheumatology

On May 3, Candice Reyes, MD visitedthe DA sophomore class. Dr. Reyesintroduced students to the field ofrheumatology and reviewed autoimmunediseases like lupus and rheumatoidarthritis. She discussed with studentsher difficult and inspirational journey topracticing medicine in the U.S. from thePhilippines.

Study Trips

UC Merced and VA Central CaliforniaHealth Care System

On March 19, DA freshmen students visit-ed UC Merced where they were welcomedby visitor center staff and taken on a tourof the University of California’s newestcampus. Additionally, they received anadmissions presentation by Lizbeth Lupi,Visitors Center Coordinator. Lunch wasgenerously sponsored for the students bythe UC Merced Office of Admissions in theUC Merced Yablokoff-Wallace DiningCenter where they experienced collegecampus dining. Students completed theirafternoon with a visit to VA CentralCalifornia Health Care System. They wereescorted on a tour of the hospital by MaryGolden, Voluntary Service ProgramManager and Caruthers High alumna. Theywere able to learn about the rich historyand the medical services offered at the VACentral California Health Care System forveterans and their families. Students fin-ished their day with a health professionalpanel led by VA employees.

Stanford University and StanfordUniversity School of Medicine

On February 26,DA sophomorestudents visitedboth StanfordUniversity andStanfordUniversity Schoolof Medicine.Students wereable to visit thedepartment ofsurgery and had the opportunity to learn

UC Davis and UC Davis School ofVeterinary Medicine

On April 9, DA juniors visited UC Daviswhere they toured the campus comple-mented with a presentation by the UCDavis Office of Admissions. TheEducational Opportunity Program (EOP),which serves first generation, low-incomestudents undergraduates at UC Davistalked to students about the servicesoffered. EOP focuses on accomplishinghigher retention and graduation rates ofunderserved students. Students complet-ed their day at the UC Davis School ofVeterinary Medicine where they met withveterinary students and were offered an upclose and personal tour of the hospital andtraining facilities.

UC Santa Cruz and Santa Cruz Museumof Natural History

On April 17, JDA eighth grade studentsvisited UC Santa Cruz. Students were ledon a tour of the picturesque school sur-rounded by redwood trees and localwildlife. Students met with pre-health stu-dents from Kappa Gamma Delta andSigma Mu Delta where they talked aboutstudent life, getting admitted, and livingnear the beach. Students ended their dayat the Santa Cruz Museum of NaturalHistory and Seabright Beach where theyperformed pH experiments on the con-necting river and ocean.

UCSF School of Medicine

On April 5, 69 DA seniors from Caruthers,Selma and Sunnyside high schools wereinvited to visit UCSF School of Medicine.During the annual end-of-year visit, stu-dents were treated to an anatomic pathol-ogy lab led by Dr. Henry Sanchez wherestudents examined human organs fromseveral body systems. DA students hadthe opportunity to meet with current UCSFstudents from several different graduateschools including the School of Dentistry,Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy and Post-Baccalaureate Program. A huge thank youto Latasha Mitchell and Valerie Margol fortheir continued support in helping to coor-dinate this event.
