When Selling Against Dell:• Get the customer nodding on Dell strategy about focus on
price vs. innovation/differentiation• Sell Cisco innovation over Dell’s “Cost +” approach• The issue with price leaders is by definition they must be
cheaper. However, being cheaper has Dell at #3 in marketshare (below HP and IBM).
• Being the “cheapest” solution out there forces companies to cut back on R&D spending. That’s why Dell is always focused on being a price leader, not an innovator.
• Don’t be fooled by list prices. Typical Cisco discount is significantly higher than Dell. Because Dell’s discount is much lower, Dell needs a lower sticker price to keep mindshare.
• Can the C-Series compete on price?• In some cases and configurations yes• For the right opportunities Cisco can come close• If the config type isn’t favorable, customer doesn’t care about
innovation and the advantage innovation can bring to their data center and lowest price is the primary buying criteria – walk away. Note if price was everything, Dell would be #1 and not #3 in the market.

When Selling Against Dell:• Get the customer nodding on Dell strategy about focus on
price vs. innovation/differentiation• Sell Cisco innovation over Dell’s “Cost +” approach• The issue with price leaders is by definition they must be
cheaper. However, being cheaper has Dell at #3 in marketshare (below HP and IBM).
• Being the “cheapest” solution out there forces companies to cut back on R&D spending. That’s why Dell is always focused on being a price leader, not an innovator.
• Don’t be fooled by list prices. Typical Cisco discount is significantly higher than Dell. Because Dell’s discount is much lower, Dell needs a lower sticker price to keep mindshare.
• Can the C-Series compete on price?• In some cases and configurations yes• For the right opportunities Cisco can come close• If the config type isn’t favorable, customer doesn’t care about
innovation and the advantage innovation can bring to their data center and lowest price is the primary buying criteria – walk away. Note if price was everything, Dell would be #1 and not #3 in the market.
