On 1 June, 2011, the UConn chapters of SPIE and OSA jointly hosted the one-day student conference "UConn Optics and Photonics". The conference, co-sponsored by the ECE department, featured a keynote address “Moving Holographic TV from the Lab to Your Living Room” by Professor Michael Bove of the MIT Media Lab. Graduate Students in Electrical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Cell Biology and Material Science from UConn and Yale also presented their research at the conference. Prizes were awarded for the best presentations.

Conference prize winners

On 20 and 21 August, 2011, UConn SPIE officers attended the leadership

workshop in San Diego (Cuong Do and Yi Yang).

On 13 Feb, 2012, we visited IPG Photonics (www.ipgphotonics.com/) in Oxford,

MA. The company is about 40 minutes from UConn.

IPG Photonics is the world's leading provider of high power fiber lasers and fiber

amplifiers that are revolutionizing performance and utility in a remarkable array

of materials processing, telecommunications, medical and other advanced

applications. IPG Photonics Ranked #6 Small Company in America by Forbes

Magazine.

Our visit started in the show room, then a brief tour of the facility, meeting with

sales VP and people from the scientific lasers unit. Lunch was served by the

company. The trip is helpful to UConn Chapter members, especially graduate

students who are interested in the work at the company.

We send our representative (Michael Ambroselli) to the SPIE Photonics Europe

leadership workshop in Brussels this year (15 April, 2012).
