Where are we today with BIM adoption?
USA estimates (2009) CAD managers survey (Robert Green, Cadalyst)
market is still very 2D-centric: Totally 2D -- 19% Mainly 2D but evaluating 3D -- 51% Hybrid 2D/3D -- 24% Totally 3D -- 6%
AEC market is worse: Totally 2D -- 33% Mainly 2D but evaluating 3D -- 51% Hybrid 2D/3D -- 14% Totally 3D -- 2%
but civil engineering ahead of the rest Totally 2D -- 23% Mainly 2D but evaluating 3D -- 45% Hybrid 2D/3D -- 21% Totally 3D -- 11%

BIM familiarity 97% (from 29% in 2006)
44% have used BIM (23% in 2006)
Only 2% firms using BIM on all projects
41% don’t use BIM at all When will BIM be used by
50% of industry? 43% said within 5-10 years (less saying “never”!)
When will BIM be used by 90% of industry? 53% said within 15 years
Most commentators suggest UK is lagging behind USA

From: substantial in-house investment in hardware and software, training, etc Autodesk Revit, Bentley, et al interoperability hurdles (eg, USACE BIM standards)
To: software-as-a-service (SaaS), ie: models shared “in the cloud” (BIMaaS)
Maybe a hybrid of the two? Today: VisualTAO, BIMserver.org, Onuma, Asite
cBIM, Autodesk labs tools, Dezineforce Web 2.0: owner/user inputs (YouCanPlan),
operational information (Pachube), etc
