Membership & Communication

Utilizes online membership remittance process to submit dues • **NEW** ASDA Chapter has successfully enrolled all new students in the International Dental program graduating in 2012. • UCLA utilizes electronic remittance procedures which were submitted in the Fall and are up-to-date. • During first-year orientation, students are encouraged to join ASDA and they are automatically re-enrolled in subsequent years.

Encourages member involvement and has significant participation from members • UCLA has a Publicity Committee specifically tasked to encourage further member participation from our classmates, especially

the first year members who are new to ASDA. • Through extensive publicizing (described below), all members encouraged to attend events. • We have been able to host audiences of over 100 students to many lunch lectures and more than 75% of the student body attended

the 16th

• Our publicity machine has been very successful in ensuring 100% of members have participated in at least one ASDA event over the course of the year.

Annual ASDA Vendor Fair.

Chapter employs the following communication vehicles: class announcements, bulletin boards, e-mail, Web site, Facebook page • For every event, the Publicity Committee utilizes multiples forms of communication to ensure the student body is aware of ASDA

events and activities. o Such vehicles include email reminders, school-wide intercom announcements, classroom announcements, student-designed event

fliers, a bulletin board with future and past events posted and our ASDA Chapter website. • As of last year, we have taken advantage of Facebook in order to reach the student body. We will send messages and create event

pages to keep the student body aware of upcoming ASDA activities. • **NEW** The ASDA Website at www.bruinasda.com has been completely redesigned in the Summer of 2010 and is packed

with new features and a fresh look.

Chapter publishes a local newsletter at least three times per school year • The Diastema News, UCLA’s ASDA newsletter, is published quarterly. • **NEW** The Newsletter Committee has grown to include 16 active members with 3 section editors, 3 layout editors, and 12

writers.

Contributes to national ASDA publications, podcasts, blog, and Facebook page • Jason Scott serves as contributing editor of ASDA News and has written a 7 articles in addition to 11 Mouthing Off blog entries. • Matt Ronconi serves as contributing editor of ASDA News and has written 8 articles for ASDA News in addition to blog entries. • Mark Hower wrote article entitled “Historic Healthcare Reform and Dentistry” published in the May edition of ASDA News. • In addition, 6 other UCLA ASDA members have written for national ASDA publications including: 1) Andrew Read-Fuller 2)

• **NEW** UCLA ASDA has successfully promoted pre-dental recruitment is at an all-time high of 19 pre-dental members. • **NEW** We have successfully tackled the national initiative to eliminate the No-Vendor Lunch and Learn policy and have

hosted corporate sponsors for the first time in (3) years. • **NEW** In April 2010, the Annual Session delegation held a Lunch and Learn reviewing the Resolutions adopted at Annual

Session. • **NEW** The ASDA Executive Committee prepared a presentation for UCLA International Dental Students about Resolution

325-2010: Inclusion of Dentistry as a STEM Designated Degree Program.

Organized Dentistry All seniors know how to join ADA after graduation • The California Dental Association (CDA) hosted a lunchtime event in which senior dental students were oriented on the benefits

of joining CDA and ADA and how to join upon graduating. • It is the role of the 4th year class representatives to reinforce ADA membership. • 4th

year class representatives are responsible for distributing and completing ADA Conversion Kits.

100 percent of members convert to ADA membership in the year after graduation • Each graduating senior is provided with information and is strongly encouraged to join the ADA; however, statistics of this

information were not available to our ASDA chapter.

ADA SUCCESS Dental Student Program scheduled & given for first, second, third and fourth years • The UCLA administration does not allow ASDA to host the ADA SUCCESS Program. Therefore, the Educational Lecture Series

Chair implemented a UCLA ASDA modified SUCCESS program in conjunction with Robyn Thomason of the California Dental Association.

o Lunchtime Lectures included: 1) “CV Writing and Proper Interviewing,” 2) “Practice Management and the Practice Support Center provided by the CDA.”

Chapter is involved with state and/or local dental society • This year, ASDA members attended a record number of (5) events hosted by CDA including: 1)

California Dental Student Networking Event, 2) California Dental Student Access to Care Forum 3) CDA Leadership Conference 4) CDA Scientific Sessions 5) California Dental Student State Lobby Day

ASDA member Ryan Abelowitz served on the organizing committee for the CDA Annual Scientific Session in Anaheim, CA in May 2010. Over 400 vendors were present, which offered a unique opportunity for ASDA members to be exposed to a multitude of dental products not available to us in our clinic.

• ASDA members Lindley Zerbe and Giancarlo Santos are serving as lead organizers of the CDA Leadership Conference in Anaheim, CA featuring many top leaders of state, local and student dental organizations including six UCLA ASDA members.

Over 100 UCLA ASDA members attended the event, many of whom served as volunteers for the UCLA Alumni Society fundraiser and networking event.

• ASDA member Giancarlo Santos is currently working with CDA in order to plan the Second Annual California Dental Student State Lobby Day for April 5, 2011. This event was spearheaded in 2010 by the ASDA Legislative Liaison Ryan Abelowitz.

• Four UCLA ASDA members serve as student liaisons to the CDA, one from each dental school class: Ryan Abelowitz, Lindley Zerbe, Giancarlo Santos and Laura Pashkowsky.

• The local component and CDA attend the UCLA exhibitor fair to host booths and answer student questions. • Our ASDA chapter works closely with the California Dental Association, coordinating events, seminars, and leadership

conferences with the organization listed throughout this application.

Chapter has voting representation in the state dental society House of Delegates • Two UCLA ASDA members, Ryan Abelowitz and Lindley Zerbe, hold full voting positions in the California Dental Society

House of Delegates as Student CDA Representatives. • The CDA reps regularly attend local component meetings. The component doesn’t hold formal votes, but the student reps have

full participation privileges in discussions, and they provide extensive input on the student perspective on local and statewide issues.

Chapter has representation on state dental society councils. • UCLA ASDA member, Lindley Zerbe, serves on the CDA Leadership Development Committee which is responsible for:

Activities

• (6) of the 11 Lunch and Learn programs hosted this year have encouraged interaction between students and faculty or dental societies including: California Dental Association’s Dean Chelios speaking to important issues, Clinic Director speaking about patient management, Clinical Professors speaking about careers in dentistry as women.

Chapter offers professional or educational programs for interaction between students & faculty, staff, state/local dental societies

• Pre-dental events including: Banquet with invited faculty and (2) lectures which included a Meet and Greet with the Chair of Restorative Dentistry and Chair of Admissions.

• Students attend local component meetings and state meetings with CDA (more details in the Organized Dentistry section). • •

The ASDA Basketball Tournament Committee and Golf Committee each include dozens of alumni and faculty. The 16th Annual Vendor Fair included record numbers of UCLA alumni and faculty in attendance.

• **NEW** The Second Year Enrichment Committee (SYEC) has provided (2) group demonstrations for most preclinical laboratory courses including: Operative, fixed prosth, endo, complete dentures, RPD.

Chapter offers tutoring/mentoring

• The First Year Enrichment Committee which organizes several tutorials each quarter including 1) Wax n’ Relax with a tooth ID tutorial 2) Drill n’ Chill 3) didactic tutorials.

• ASDA Pre-Dental Committee has a Big Sib/Lil Sib Series where 1st year dental students assigned to mentor pre-dental students.

• UCLA ASDA is the sole organization responsible for hosting the Annual Exhibitors’ Fair featuring 48 vendors. Chapter organizes vendor fair

• The Educational Lecture Series (ELS) Committee is tasked with planning and hosting lunch and learn activities for UCLA ASDA and has hosted (11) events so far this year, with more planned for the near future. The titles/topics included:

o **NEW** For the first time in three years, UCLA ASDA has been successful in bringing in corporate vendors to speak with dental students including: Medical Protective and ADA Insurance Plans

• Chapter provides social activities

• UCLA ASDA has a Dental Olympics Committee which promotes student morale, teamwork, and camaraderie between each class. This committee hosts (3) events over two quarters including: Winter Dental Olympic Relays, Spring Dental Olympics Dental Jeopardy and Spring Dental Olympics Lab Challenge.

The ASDA Basketball Tournament Committee and the Golf Tournament Committee hosts (2) separate social events.

• **NEW** Student Morale Committee has held (3) social events coordinated with each season: 1) Ice Cream Float Party in Summer 2) Pinata Bashing for Halloween 3) Hot Chocolate with Marshmallows and Whip cream in Winter

• Student Morale Committee provides final exam care packages for the students.

• **NEW** UCLA student organized the First Annual District 11 Southern California Community Outreach Event. (15) UCLA students attended the Adopt-A-Park event as well as students from Western, USC and Loma Linda

Chapter interacts with other ASDA chapters in region through activities

• UCLA Basketball Tournament included invitation to all District 11 ASDA members. (32) participants included UCLA, USC and Western Dental Schools.

• UCLA sent a 14 students to 2010 Annual Session and looks forward to sending 24 students to 2011 Annual Session! • 24 UCLA ASDA members attended the Second Annual District 11 Meeting in San Francisco, California

• Chapter participates in community service or outreach activities

The UCLA ASDA Community Service Committee coordinates a large number of events each quarter including: Adopt-A-Park, Heal the Bay Beach Clean Up, Valley Charter School Visit, Thanksgiving Day Health Fair, Thanksgiving Clothing Drive, Holiday Canned Food Drive, Give Kids a Smile Day, Hawthorne Pre-School Visit, El Rodeo Elementary School visit, Pre-natal Outreach event

• **NEW** UCLA ASDA Honduras Mission Committee established the first ever humanitarian mission to Guaimaca, Honduras. Chapter organizes activities that are unique and original

o Two trips established for each year: June 11-24, 2010 and September 1-14, 2010 o 5-chair clinic established by UCLA ASDA at the St. Rosa de Lima Parish and treated over 500 patients, provided oral

hygiene instruction and handed out over 1000 toothbrushes, toothpastes, and flosses o In the process of establishing a 501c3 non-profit organization for the mission in order to be able to provide tax write-offs

for all supply and monetary donations by companies, alumni and local dentists • Many other excellent unique activities listed above!

Advocacy Acts as a resource for information on financial aid and other pertinent issues • Increasing job placement opportunities with presentations such as “CV, Resume and Interview Workshop” with the CDA • Presentations from ADA Insurance and Medical Protective provided crucial information regarding malpractice and insurance • Upcoming Career Week for Seniors will feature a number of topics including practice attorneys, malpractice, and real estate

purchases

Provides mentoring services for new members such as explaining requirements, providing class notes or preparing test booklets • **NEW** ASDA 2nd

• ASDA Laboratory & Clinic Education Committee (founded Summer 2009) has developing a supplemental, student–fabricated clinic manual that complements UCLA’s official Dental Clinic Handbook. The manual:

Year Enrichment Committee organizes information for dispersing to second year students including notes for each didactic and laboratory class in the second year

o Encompasses the entirety of both preclinical and clinical procedures offering time-saving tips that will facilitate completion of those procedures.

o Lists our clinical requirements in detail, along with a road map and strategies for completion in a timely manner for graduation.

o Offers explanations and tutorials for navigating the complex patient management software used at UCLA. o Includes samples of clinical documentation entries as preferred by various member of the clinic faculty. o Be designed as a ‘living’ manual for continual improvement as time progresses.

• ASDA 1st year Enrichment Committee organizes information for dispersing to 1st

o Info sessions for challenging classes such as Physiology where 2 year students including:

Lunch and Learn session following requests from membership • Students are encouraged to email and consult with the Legislative Liaison whenever they hear about any political issues affecting

the dental community. Attends State and National Lobby Days • Led all California schools with 34 appointments for the US House of Representatives and Senate for 2010 Lobby Day • Brought a UCLA record attendance of 15 students to National Lobby Day 2010 • ASDA member Ryan Abelowitz spearheaded the founding of the 1st Annual California Dental Student State Lobby Day with

assistance from the California Dental Association. The 2nd

Annual Dental Student Lobby Day is scheduled for April 5, 2011.

Holds ADPAC drives • UCLA ASDA is in the planning stages of our Annual ADPAC drive for mid-February. • As part of our ADPAC drive, we are hosting speakers including:

o CDA Speaker of the House, Dr. Alan Felsenfeld and ADA Congressional Lobbyist, Mike Brzica

Attains at least a 20% ADPAC membership within chapter • UCLA currently has 57% ADPAC membership for 2010-2011 membership year and this is before our official ADPAC drive! Communicates ASDA’s policies on issues, such as access to care, mid-level providers, and licensure to members • Licensure Representative, Brittany Hazard, delivered a presentation regarding the current state of licensure in California which

included background on ASDA’s stance on licensure • CDA’s Vice –President on Public Policy spoke about a number of topics pertinent to dentistry in which chapter members

educated the audience on ASDA’s stance on these topics. • **NEW** The Importance Issues Facing Dentistry Series for pre-dental members

o A dental student gives one lecture per quarter on pertinent topics in dentistry and topics have included: Licensure Across the USA, Midlevel Providers: Friend or Foe, Legislative Issues Affecting Us: a Recap from National Dental Student Lobby Day

• **NEW** In April 2010, the Annual Session delegation presented the Resolutions adopted at Annual Session to the school.

Attains >80% enrollment in ADA’s free $50,000 life insurance benefit • UCLA ASDA currently has 82% of its members enrolled in ADA’s free life insurance benefit!

Fundraising Conducts one or more organized efforts at earning money • • UCLA ASDA organized an extremely successful Vendor Fair on January 11, 2011 which included a 48 vendors with

four Platinum Sponsors.

**NEW** Total of six fundraising events this past year. This is an increase from last year!

o 300 UCLA students, faculty, staff, alumni, and pre-dental students as well as members of the Western Los Angeles Dental Society attended the fair.

o $3000 worth of prizes were given away in the raffle drawing which occurred during the fair. • •

The ASDA Basketball Tournament Committee incorporates a t-shirt sale into its annual event.

The Golf Tournament Committee raises thousands of dollars by selling sponsorships for each hole of the golf course at which the tournament is held.

o

For the second year, UCLA ASDA initiated a joint fundraiser with PDSOP (the UCLA pre-dental society) selling toothbrushes and Crest Whitestrips.

• This fundraising effort is beneficial to both UCLA ASDA and PDSOP.

**NEW** UCLA ASDA partnered with Lexi-Comp to conduct a fundraiser selling drug information books for reduced prices to students. Proceeds benefitted the UCLA ASDA Honduras Committee.

**NEW** Over $3500 dollars and all necessary supplies fundraised for Honduras Mission.

Efforts at raising money are successful • In January 2011, the UCLA ASDA Vendor Fair generated over $26,000 in revenue. • The UCLA ASDA Toothbrush and Whitestrip Fundraiser generated $1,000 in revenue. In addition, UCLA PDSOP

(predental society) raised over $1000 in the event. • •

The ASDA Basketball Tournament Committee raised $600.

• Golf Committee raised $7000 in April of 2010

o **NEW** Over $3500 dollars and numerous supplies fundraised for Honduras Mission

o $3000 from direct donations by family and church associations by ASDA member efforts

o $500 from Medical Protective

o 1000 toothbrushes from Oral-B and Crest

o 30 cases of mouthwash from Johnson and Johnson

• Many more supplies!

Total fundraising of $38,100 from 2010-2011—over $100 dollars of fundraising per member!

Fundraising contributes to annual expenses • UCLA ASDA Fundraising provides the sole source of revenue for UCLA ASDA for the entire year. • Some examples for which money has been used include:

o It provides funding for all ASDA sponsored trips: Western Regional Meeting, National Dental Student Lobby Day, Annual Session.

o It provides funding for nearly all Lunch and Learn events. o Chapter provided funding to establish Honduras Dental Clinic

• All other ASDA hosted events mentioned throughout the Ideal ASDA Application. • Chapter funds subsidized over $650 in ASDA national dues in order to reduce member expenses. Organizes fundraisers that are unique and creative • Reached out to the UCLA Predental Committee to have them contribute to fundraising

o Participated in a toothbrush and Whitestrip fundraiser to raise money for both organizations o Had 6 predental members actively contributing to planning and recruiting for the exhibitor fair

• Organized a new fundraiser to benefit the UCLA ASDA Honduras Committee • New fundraisers in the planning stages

o First Annual Southern California Pre-Dental Conference where students can attend a summit to learn about organized dentistry. Activities will include breakout session about organized dentistry, hot topics in dentistry, a vendor fair, and laboratory experience.

o Demo day where exhibitors can showcase products and allow students to test the products hands-on.

Predental Membership Recruits predental members for national ASDA membership • **NEW** UCLA ASDA Pre-Dental Committee has successfully enrolled 19 pre-dental national ASDA members! • PDSOP is the pre-dental club at UCLA and has over 100 active members. • The ASDA Pre-Dental Committee presented the benefits of pre-dental ASDA membership powerpoint (supplied by national

ASDA), supplemented with UCLA ASDA experiences including Vendor Fair, National meetings and Lobby Day

Introduces predentals to dental school and organized dentistry (ASDA and ADA) • Pre-Dental students were given presentation introducing the benefits of ASDA membership • The ASDA Pre-Dental Committee includes FOUR separate lecture series to provide a complete picture of dentistry:

o The Faculty Lecture Series included: Chair of Admissions who explained how to best prepare your application. Chair of Restorative Dentistry spoke about pre-clinical lab, clinic, and the curriculum.

o The Student Lecture Series included: “Pre-Dental Survivor Series” in which first-year dental students described how they personally got into

dental school in addition to application advice. “A Day in the Life of a UCLA First Year Dental Student” given in Spring 2009 and Winter 2010.

o The Big Sib Lab Series included: Mentorship Banquet “Pass-me-down Lab” with dental students teaching Class I preps to Pre-Dental students Pre-dental student shadows “Big Sib” dental student for one day in Spring quarter Mock interview session and personal statement critique

Provides leadership opportunities for predentals • The Pre-Dental Student Outreach Program (PDSOP) has an executive cabinet with a President, Vice President, Treasurer, and

Secretary. • The PDSOP cabinet works closely with the Pre-Dental Committee Chair with quarterly meetings to communicate the needs of the

pre-dental students. • The ASDA Fundraising Committee Chair worked with the PDSOP cabinet to organize a combined fundraiser in which they sold

dental supplies to fundraise for both ASDA and PDSOP. The most successful fundraiser was awarded the “UCLA ASDA Oral Health Awareness Award.”

• **NEW** Pre-dental students provided assistance in preparing for 16th

the pre-dental students with the events listed above. • The 3-part Student Lecture Series concludes every lecture with the dental and pre-dental students breaking up in small groups. • The 16th

• Pre-dental students were invited to attend Southern California ASDA Community Service Adopt-A-Park alongside the four Southern California dental schools.

Annual ASDA Vendors’ Fair provides an opportunity for pre-dental students to interact with both UCLA Alumni and members of the Western Los Angeles Dental Society.

• **NEW** Partial scholarship given to selected pre-dental students to attend Annual Session in Anaheim, CA for excellence in fundraising

Serves as mentors for predentals • Each year the Pre-Dental Committee Chair and the Pre-Dental Student Outreach Program (PDSOP) cabinet work together to

match pre-dental students with first year dental students as a part of the Big Sib/Lil Sib program. • Pre-dental students have also been encouraged to participate in health fairs organized by ASDA’s Community Service Committee

Restorative Dentistry • Several more joint activities with SPEC are planned for the coming quarters

Develops resources on ethics for your chapter • Links to the ASDA code of ethics and UCLA Code of ethics are published on the ASDA Website. • Articles related to ethics are available for download on the ASDA Website. Relationship with student ethics organizations at your school, such as the Student Professional Ethics Club • UCLA ASDA frequently co-sponsors events with UCLA’s chapter of the Student Professionalism and Ethics Club. • We work regularly with Student Professional Ethics Committee as all Executive Cabinet members are ASDA leaders

Displays Code of Ethics prominently at chapter (web site, newsletter, bulletin boards, etc.) and distributes Code to members of chapter

• The ASDA Code of Ethics was e-mailed to all students, posted on the UCLA ASDA website, and distributed to all students in hard-copy.

• A link to the Code of Ethics was included in the UCLA ASDA newsletter.
