SEASON IN REVIEWUCLA finished in a third-place tie with Oregon State in the Pac-10 standings, winning the tiebreak by virtue of the Bruins’ Pac-10 series victory over the Beavers (April 24-26). The Bruins recorded their fourth consecutive third-place finish in Pac-10 play, finishing 15-12. Over the last four seasons (2006-09), UCLA ranks second in the Pac-10 in conference wins (55) and conference win percentage (.561). In 2009, the Bruins finished 25-19 through their final 46 games after having opened the season with a 2-10 record.
FRESHMAN OF THE YEARRight-hander Trevor Bauer earned Pac-10 Freshman of the Year honors after having gone 9-3 with a 2.99 ERA. Bauer recorded 92 strikeouts and 27 walks in a team-leading 105.1 innings, making 20 appearances (10 starts). He secured Freshman All-America honors from Baseball America, Rivals.com/Yahoo! Sports, Collegiate Baseball, the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) and Ping!Baseball. In addition, Bauer was named the National Freshman Pitcher of the Year by Collegiate Baseball. Bauer, who led the Bruins with four complete games, was one of just three freshmen in the conference to earn All-Pac-10 team honors.
UPPER DECKERSenior first baseman Cody Decker finished the season batting .322 with team-highs of 21 home runs, 53 RBI, 136 total bases and a .683 slugging percentage. Decker became the first UCLA ballplayer since 2002 (Adam Berry, Wes Whisler) to lead the Pac-10 Conference in home runs. He earned All-Pac-10 team accolades for the second time in his career (also 2007) before being selected in the 22nd round of the 2009 MLB Draft by the San Diego Padres. Decker’s 21 home runs in 2009 marked the largest single-season total by a Bruin since 2001 (Forrest Johnson 23, Bill Scott 22, Chase Utley 21).
WEEKEND HURLERFreshman right-hander Gerrit Cole was a fixture in UCLA’s weekend rotation the entire season. Cole finished the year 4-8 with a 3.49 ERA, compiling 104 strikeouts and 38 walks in 85.0 innings. He finished first among Pac-10 pitchers with a .191 opponent batting average, and his 104-strikeout total ranked fourth in the conference and established a new freshman single-season record at UCLA. Cole ranked third in the nation in hits allowed per nine innings (6.04), behind junior right-handers Stephen Strasburg (San Diego State, 5.37) and Mike Leake (Arizona State, 6.02). Cole led the Pac-10 and ranked 17th nationally in strikeouts per nine innings (11.01).
ROAD WARRIORSUCLA faced the third-most difficult schedule, nationally, as ranked by Boyd’s World (national strength of schedule ranking service). After opening the season with a three-game home series, the Bruins spent four consecutive weekends on the road – in the Houston College Classic (Feb. 27-March 1), at Oklahoma (March 6-8), at East Carolina (March 13-14) and at USC (March 21-23). UCLA played seven weekend trips away from southern California. The Bruins began the season playing 22 of their first 33 games away from home. Round-trip flights included, UCLA’s travel schedule spanned over 16,000 miles.
STRIKEOUT STAFFUCLA’s pitching staff recorded 509 strikeouts, the second-highest total in program history (531 in 2000). Led by Gerrit Cole (104), Trevor Bauer (92) and Charles Brewer (71), the Bruins ranked ninth in the nation and second in the Pac-10 with 9.3 strikeouts per nine innings. UCLA registered 10 strikeouts or more in 25 games. Cole (12) and Bauer (5) combined for a team season-high 17 strikeouts in the second game of a doubleheader at East Carolina (March 13). Cole totaled a team-best 13 strikeouts against Washington (April 17).
CENTER STAGEJunior Blair Dunlap started 55 of UCLA’s 56 games in center field. He led the team in hits (68), at-bats (226), doubles (17), triples (tied, 3), and stolen bases (15). Dunlap ranked second with 19 multiple-hit games and 11 multiple-RBI efforts. He logged a career-high 11-game hitting streak (Feb. 27-March 13) and finished the year having hit safely in 43 of 55 games. An honorable mention All-Pac-10 selection and two-time Pac-10 All-Academic honoree, Dunlap collected six of his seven home runs and 25 of his 39 RBI in Pac-10 play.
CASEY AT THE BATJunior corner infielder Casey Haerther batted .305 with nine home runs, 42 RBI and 31 runs in 52 games (49 starts). A fifth-round draft selection by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim (171st overall), Haerther led UCLA with 21 multiple-hit games and registered 10 multiple-RBI efforts. SENIOR CONTRIBUTORSenior Gino Aielli played a major role for the Bruins in 2009, having led UCLA with a .353 batting average in 43 games (35 starts). He secured second-team Pac-10 All-Academic accolades after having finished third on the team with a .429 on-base percentage. Splitting time behind the plate with freshman Steve Rodriguez, Aielli helped UCLA’s defense post the highest caught stealing rate in Pac-10 play (53.6 pct, 15-of-28). In addition, Aielli helped the Bruins’ pitching staff post a 4.28 overall ERA, the fourth-lowest mark among Pac-10 teams. He collected five three-hit games and one five-hit effort, going 5-for-6 against Cal State Bakersfield (May 5).
SOPHOMORE SOUTHPAWSSophomore left-handers Matt Grace and Rob Rasmussen each helped solidify the Bruins’ bullpen in 2009. Grace earned honorable mention All-Pac-10 accolades after having gone 4-3 with a 4.72 ERA in 40.0 innings. The left-hander went 1-1 with a team-leading 1.69 ERA in Pac-10 play, collecting 16 strikeouts and four walks in 16.0 innings. Rasmussen split time between the Bruins’ starting rotation and bullpen. He finished the season 4-2 with a 6.45 ERA, collecting 51 strikeouts and 26 walks in 44.2 innings. Rasmussen was named Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week (April 13), after going 1-0 with one save in two relief outings.

HEAD COACH JOHN SAVAGERecord at UCLA141-150 (Five seasons)
Overall Record229-234-1 (Eight seasons)
In five seasons as head coach, John Savage has established UCLA as a perennial national contender. In 2008, he became UCLA’s first head baseball coach to lead the program to three consecutive postseasons. In June 2006, the Bruins played in the Malibu Regional. UCLA swept
the 2007 Long Beach Regional before advancing to the Super Regional at Cal State Fullerton, UCLA’s first Super Regional appearance since 2000. In 2008, the Bruins advanced to the Regional Final at Cal State Fullerton. Savage has also made significant strides on the recruiting trail, helping UCLA land four recruiting classes ranked in the top-13 by Baseball America. In the fall of 2005, Savage’s first recruiting class at UCLA was ranked No. 5 in the nation by Baseball America. His second recruiting class was ranked No. 13, and has last two classes have been ranked No. 7, nationally, by Baseball America.Aside from featuring winning teams, outstanding recruiting classes, and consistently challenging schedules, Savage has made significant improvements to Jackie Robinson Stadium. Under Savage’s guidance, the ballpark now features a 10,500-square foot hitting facility, a new grass field surface, a state-of-the-art backstop, the installation of over 1,000 chairback seats and renovated bullpens.
