Lancashire Law School

Starting university is always anoverwhelming experience foreveryone. For me, starting universitymeant moving to a new country, learning a new language andadapting to a new culture. Althoughleaving everything behind was noteasy, it was, so far, the mostrewarding experience of my life.

Undoubtedly, choosing the Criminology andCriminal Justice degree at UCLan was notdifficult because I knew it would offer me anopportunity to develop my knowledge andunderstanding of the subject.

What I didn’t know, however, was that thisdegree goes beyond the superficialconceptualizations of crime, offering achallenging critical analysis of the ways inwhich crime has been perceived, defined andmanaged throughout history, culminating inthe study of contemporary society.

This was a full day event for all Criminologystudents designed to provide lots ofinformation about employment options for Criminology graduates, and also todiscuss ways of enhancing employabilitybefore graduating.

The day was split into two parts:considering first the broad skills importantto employers, before then moving on tolook at the world of Criminology morespecifically.

The event consisted of a variety of activities, and included guest talks from people in thefield of Criminal Justice, talking about whatthey do and how they got there.

STUDENT EXPERIENCE

“Fantastic guest speakers and brilliant day”

Student Profile

“I would recommend UCLan to anyone who is looking for an amazing adventure of self-development and improvement. It’s not easy, but it’s worth it!”

Details about my day-to-day role within the Law SchoolI work on modules across the undergraduateCriminology courses offered at UCLan, and I ammodule leader for both of the prison modulesdelivered here.

My research specialism is prisons, and much of my role relates to this. Firstly, I am a dissertationsupervisor for final year Criminology studentsexploring different issues in prisons. I also haveconnections with the Criminal Justice Partnershiphere at UCLan, and have attended and been a partof a number of events organised by them. Forexample, at an event relating to desistance, I sat onthe panel with Professor Shadd Maruna from theUniversity of Manchester, discussing issues relatingto desistance from crime.

I work as part of the employability team for the LawSchool as well acting as the Criminology lead. Aspart of this, I have been making connections withexternal companies and have recently arrangedwork placements for Year 3 students. The eventfocused firstly on the broad skills important toemployees, and then went on to look at theprominent career pathways for Criminologystudents, and skills that they are likely to need tosecure desired roles.

Research and projects I have undertakenMy PhD looked at the experiences of d/Deafprisoners in England and Wales. My findings fromthe study have acted as the basis for a number ofpublications, including a lengthy article which waswritten for the Prison Service Journal [the officialjournal published by the Prison Service]. For thisarticle I have recently been awarded outstandingarticle of 2017, for which I am due to collect theaward later in the year.

I run an annual prisoner/student learningprogramme called Debating Differences. Thisprogramme involves final year Law and Criminologystudents coming together with prisoners from HMP Kirkham to debate a number of issues incontemporary society. The purpose of this schemeis to break down barriers, to increase communicationskills and confidence levels, and to teach participantshow to put together arguments and participate instructured debates. This programme has been aresounding success, and running it is one of thebest parts of my job.

Interests outside of UniversityI absolutely LOVE animals. I have a dog calledBarney (who is a big fluffy beast), a guinea pigcalled Daisy, and Ian the fish. I love going hometo them (and my partner Tom) every night.

DR LAURA KELLYLecturer in Criminology, Lancashire Law School

The UCLan Cybercrime Research Unit[UCRU], directed by Dr Tim Owen,Senior Lecturer in Criminology atLancashire Law School, is rapidlygaining international respect as a think-tank and field-unit working at the verycutting-edge of this research area.

Cyberspace is perhaps the fastest growingenvironment for crime and deviance. Hate-trolling, cyber-terrorism, online fraudand cyber-grooming are of rapidly-increasinginterest and concern to criminologists, lawyers, police, security services and policy-makers.

In July 2017 UCRU hosted a very successfuland well-attended two day international-levelconference on Cybercrime: ‘The UCLanSecond Annual Conference on Cybercrime’.

This conference followed on from thefootsteps of the previous year’s highlysuccessful ‘Rethinking Cybercrime’ two dayconference. This unique and very excitingevent brought together leading academics and practitioners from across the worldrepresenting a diverse range of disciplinesfrom Law, Criminology and Sociology toPolicing, Forensic Science and InformationTechnology.

Students of Criminology in Lancashire LawSchool with an interest in Cybercrime wouldbe interested in the Year 3 option, Crime andNew Technologies. This popular andinteresting module covers Cybercrime in somedetail as well as issues such as Genetics andNeuroscience, in relation to crime and criminalbehaviour.
