3. Details of Chapter activities since last report.
a. Describe exactly how chapter grant funding was spent.
In the beginning of the academic year (October) we hosted the Welcome Event with over 40 attendees, and spent a total of $198, fro OSA funds.
On November 20 we hosted the 7th edition of our annual Art in Science contest. We received more than 30 entries from student in multiple departments of UCI. We spent a total of $180.00 on this event for printing the art, food and drinks for the reception, and for advertisement purposes. The Art in Science was funded by SPIE and OSA.
This year we had 6 invited speakers for our seminar series Frontiers in Photonics. On October we invited Dr. Anita Mahadevan-‐Jansen from Vanderbilt University as our first speaker of the year. She also participated in a Women in Science discussion session. Dr. Steven Jacques (Professor, Departments of Biomedical Engineering and Dermatology, Oregon Health & Science University) was our SPIE travelling lecturer and visited us in December. We have also hosted highly qualified professionals in well-‐established optics/photonics companies: Mr. James Fisher, VP from Newport Corporation and Mr. Silberman from Physik Instrumente (PI). In March 2015, we hosted a professional development seminar lead by Dr. Jean-‐luc Doumont, and in June we had our 6th speaker Dr. V. Ramanathan (Department of Chemistry, SASTRA University, Tamil Nadu, India). We have spent a total of $1200 on these events. Funds came from SPIE, OSA, and CaSTL (the UCI center for Chemistry at the Space-‐time Limit).
Recently we hosted the Ensenada student chapter for a site visit as a part of student chapter interaction activity. We did not spend any funding for this event.
We participated in a number of outreach activities throughout the year. This includes the San Diego Festival of Science and Engineering. This was our 3rd year at the festival. Over 500 children of all ages and students visited us. We handed out our Spectrobox kits, and our Kaleidoscopes were also a huge success: children of all ages lined up to build their own color-‐pattern tube. We spent $950 for this event. Our outreach activities also included Santa Ana AVID visit to UCI, participation in “Light the future” which is a community outreach event at OFC 2015, and other local outreach events, such as the Beall Center Family Days at UCI and the “Engineer's Week” at the Discovery Cube of Orange County. This summer for the first time we participated in “Tech Trek Light Lesson” which is a weeklong summer course that brings gifted and often disadvantaged young girls to local universities to learn about STEM fields. 110 girls whom we also handed out our Spectrobox kits attended this event. Funds of our outreach activities come from SPIE, OSA, and in great part from CaSTL.
Finally, we hosted the Light Symposium to celebrate the IYL. This was a two-‐day symposium held at UCI. We spent $7494 for this event. Most of the funds were raised from local entities, business and UCI centers/departments. OSA and SPIE funs were also used for this purpose.
SPIE funds of $700 were allocated as follows:
• For Art in Science = $50 • For seminars = $250 • For outreach activities = $150 • For IYL special event = $250
Below are photos from some from the events:
Social event: Art in Science contest, Nov 2014
Outreach activity: San Diego Festival of Science and Engineering, March 2015
Outreach activity: AVID students from Santa Ana visit, Jan 2015
b. Were these activates described in your funding request?
Yes, most of them were already described by the request time.
4. Details of planned activities for the future.
We already started activities for this year with our Welcome Event which was held in October. We will resume the Frontiers in Photonics seminar series with our first invited speaker Dr. Bruce S. Itchkawitz (from Knobbe Martens Intellectual Property law) in November, with a talk entitled “Protecting Innovations in Photonics.” We have a list of speakers whom we would invite for our seminar of the year. We have already applied for the OSA travelling lecturer grant and will apply for the SPIE traveling lecturer grant soon. The 8th edition of Art in Science has been planned for 19thof November 2015. We will also continue with our outreach activates including San Diego Festival of Science and Engineering, March 2016, Beall Center Family Days at UCI (24th October -‐already attended-‐ and April 2016), and Tech Trek Light. Also, we will have a chapter officer attend the SPIE leadership conference at the Photonics Europe 2016.
