Course Work: Level 1: SPA 3S, 21S, 22S, 98/198 and 148S (20 total units). Review of gram‐mar sequences and practice of language skills through cultural texts.
Level 2: SPA 22S, 23S, 24S, 98/198 and 148S (18 total units). Students will fo‐cus on difficult grammar concepts and continue to develop composition skills.
Level 3: SPA 159S, 170S, 171S, 98/198, 148S (17 total units). Study of Spanish‐American literature and culture, along with the major developments in the arts and social institutions of Spanish‐America.
Note: Students at all levels take SPA 148S (Cinema in the Spanish Speaking World) taught in English, and SPA98/198 for a minimum of 1 unit.

Spend a quarter in the beautiful and historic city of Mendoza Take intensive courses in Spanish and Latin American culture at the Universidad Nacional de Cuyo

Cuban and Chicano/a Socio‐Cultural Perspectives
Spring 2012
Quarter Abroad UCDAVIS Course Work: CHI 110 Comparative Sociology of the Chicano Community and Cuban Society (4 units) Theoretical perspectives on the intersection of class, race/ethnicity, gender and sexuality. Transnational migration, labor force integration and social status, education, ethnicity/identity, political structures and political movements. GE credit: SocSci, Div., Wrt. CHI 111 Chicanas/Mexicanas in Contemporary Society (4 units) Analysis of the role and status of the Chicanas/Mexicanas in contemporary society. Special emphasis on their historical role, the political, economic and social institutions that have affected their status, their contributions to society and their community. GE credit: ArtHum CHI 198 Cuban Literature, Music and Cinema (4 units) Survey of significant works in Cuban literature, Afro‐Cuban musical genres and social criti‐cism through film. SPA 98/198 Spanish Language and Daily Culture (3 units) Students will work in small groups to improve their Spanish, to learn Cuban Spanish, and to discuss and understand daily cultural issues.
Total Units: 15 All classes count towards a minor or major in Chicano/a Studies!

Course Work: Students will take intensive classes in Spanish language or Spanish film, litera‐ture and art—based on their language proficiency. All students will take a class on Spanish culture, taught in English.
Level 1: SPA 1S, 2S, 3S, and 141S (19 units) Introduction to Spanish grammar and development of all language skills in a cultural context with a special emphasis on communication.
Level 2: SPA 100S, 141S, 143, and 148S (16 units) Study of Spanish literature, film, culture and the major developments in the arts and social institutions of Spain. Readings and lectures will be in Spanish.
Total Units: 16 ‐ 19
Internships: Students may also do internships as teaching assistants in English classes in a local elementary school and possibly other fields. A limited number of posi‐tions are available.
