Claudia borella graduated with a bachelor of industrial Design in 1994. After graduating, she went on to study at the Canberra institute of the Arts where she was awarded the 1995 institute of the Arts Acquisition Award, and graduated with first class honours. Claudia’s talents were rewarded once again in 1997 when she was the recipient of the Kyhoei Fujita Award in Denmark, and the gold medallist of telnte, munich in 1998.

Claudia’s speciality is glass, and her reputation as an artist of international standing is rising. her pieces have been acquired by the glasmuseum in Denmark, the national gallery of Australia, the toyama institute of glass Art Japan, bullseye glass Collection usA, and three of her pieces have been acquired by mehoudar Raphael in israel and sir elton John.

Claudia’s experience in the art and exhibition industry is extensive, having curated and managed a range of exhibitions in Australia, Japan and new Zealand. in 2007 Claudia founded her own company Claudia borella glass Design ltd, through which she operates as a distributor of bullseye glass in new Zealand.

Claudia’s work has been featured in lino, Australia’s premier lifestyle and Design magazine, Australian glass today, and Artist’s in glass: late twentieth Century masters in glass. Claudia has exhibited extensively both nationally and internationally, including in the united states, italy, switzerland, hong Kong, germany, Denmark and the united Kingdom.

glen bRennAn Bachelor of Arts in Sports Studies Administration, 1996

glen brennan is one of Australia’s most senior indigenous bankers. he has an impressive track record in creating and implementing award winning social programs and services and holds the role of head of indigenous finance and development at the national Australia bank (nAb).

glen was a crucial player in developing and leading nAb’s award winning microenterprise loans Program which provides safe, affordable small loans to financially marginalized individuals, particularly for the purposes of setting up small businesses.

Prior to his career in banking, glen held the position of senior political advisor to Dr Charles Perkins.

in this role he was responsible for the coordination of a range of community, corporate and political programs and activities involving social justice issues for indigenous Australians. At Dr Perkins’ side glen travelled Australia for five years negotiating on a variety of issues from getting school children to play football to multi-million dollar mining royalty fees. glen also played professional rugby league and was the leading try scorer for the Canberra Raiders in 1995.

glen has won many accolades throughout his varied career including the national Australia Day Council medal in 2002, and at 32 he was the youngest ever recipient of the Public service medal in 2005. in 2003 and 2004 glen was named in the top 100 smartest and most innovative Australians in the bulletin magazine.

nAthAn DeAKesBachelor of Commerce, 2009

nathan Deakes is Australia’s most successful race walker and in 2006 was the recipient of Australia’s most prestigious sporting award, the Australian male Athlete of the Year Award.

nathan has competed on the world stage on many occasions. he won a bronze medal at the 2004 olympics in Athens, and is a four-time Commonwealth games gold medallist. he won gold in the 20km walk and 50km walk events at both the 2002 manchester games and

the 2006 melbourne games, becoming the first man to win both the 20km and 50km walks at two consecutive Commonwealth games.

he won bronze medals at the 1998 Kuala lumpur games and the 1996 World Junior Championships and a gold medal at the 2007 World Championships in osaka in the 50km walk. in 2006 nathan broke the 50km walk world record at the Australian 50km Road Walking Championships.

nathan achieved all of this while studying a double degree in banking and Finance, and law at the university of Canberra.

ChRistoPheR hAmonBachelor of Arts in Tourism, 1996

Christopher hamon is the general manager of Westlink Consulting, a melbourne-based property valuation and consultancy practice, where he manages a team of 50 staff and a turnover of more than $8 million.

before taking up this position Christopher worked in the tourism sector; his first job out of university was director of events at the Canberra tourism and events Corporation where he delivered some of the ACt’s

largest events such as Floriade, the Asia Pacific Rally Championship and the gmC 400 V8 supercar race.

Christopher has since worked as Ceo for Weathered howe where he was project director for Commonwealth Place, a nationally significant project on the shores of lake burley griffin. under his leadership, the firm’s profit doubled and he engineered the acquisition of the firm by hyder Consulting. Christopher spent two further years with hyder Consulting as the global leader of marketing and sales before becoming a director and board member of the uK international trade organisation, british expertise.

suZie hoitinKBachelor of Nursing, 1999

suzie hoitink is a registered nurse and the founder and managing director of the Clear Complexions Clinics. Prior to founding the company, suzie worked as a nurse in a variety of clinical settings including at the Calvary and Canberra hospitals and at a cosmetic surgery practice in the ACt. suzie has since trained at solta medical and the Australasian Academy of Cosmetic Dermal science.

suzie founded the Clear Complexions Clinic in 2005, recognising a gap in the provision of medical treatment for difficult skin care conditions. today the clinic has three locations and employs over 14 staff.

the Clear Complexions Clinics are unique in that they exclusively employ highly skilled nurses to perform all treatments, enabling the clinics to source medical grade equipment only available to those with a medical background.

Bachelor of Nursing, 1999

matthew luther is a registered nurse, midwife and nurse practitioner who has pursued his career with the underpinning philosophy of service to the community.

matt’s commitment to personal and professional development has enabled him to demonstrate excellence in the fields of emergency nursing, emergency and disaster business continuity, advanced life support education and elearning platforms.

matt has worked at Calvary hospital since 2000 where he is currently the co-director of the emergency Department. Among other roles, matt has been involved in ACt Disaster Planning and volunteer work for the southern Districts Rural bushfire service.

matt holds qualifications in Aviation nursing and is also a critical care aero-medical retrieval specialist with the Royal Australian Air Force (Reserves). in this position he has been involved in the repatriation of many critically ill and injured Defence Force personnel and civilians and has provided disaster relief and humanitarian aid in south east Asia.

Bachelor, Public Relations, 1998

since 1983 Christine has been the co-owner and director of Robbo’s motorcycles Pty ltd, a successful automotive and retail business for the harley Davidson motorcycle franchise. the business was founded on years of excellent service and dedication to the needs of Canberra customers. the Robbo’s motorcycles store, located in Fyshwick is renowned for its Canberra themed fit-out and employs 12 staff members.

throughout her long standing career, Christine has held many appointments in industry groups, community

organisations and the ACt government including president of the motor trades Association ACt, member of the Fair trading Advisory Committee, member of the Canberra business Council Consultative Committee and secretary and public officer, Regional Development Australia. she was also a finalist in the telstra business Women’s Awards in 2003, 2004 and 2008 and the winner of the ACt training excellence Awards for small business of the Year in 2003.

Christine’s specialties include communication, retail and education and she demonstrates a strong interest in, and commitment to, small business issues.

emmA mACDonAlD Bachelor of Arts in Communication/Journalism, 1995

emma macdonald has been a journalist for the last 18 years, 12 of which she has spent in the Federal Press gallery. After graduating in 1995, emma began her career as a researcher for the Australian Financial Review before moving to the Canberra times in 1994. emma has covered a number of rounds but specialises in education, social affairs and national politics. she has won two Walkley Awards and was a national finalist for breaking the Reith telecard scandal in 2000.

Additionally, emma was awarded the John Douglas british Prize for Journalism in 1998.

emma has also been highly commended for her political journalism through the Paul lyneham Press gallery Journalism Award and she has been published in the times (london), Australian Financial Review, sydney morning herald, business standard (india), and Cosmopolitan and Cleo magazines. she is passionate about her craft and is regularly invited to share her knowledge with students, academics and the general public about her successful career in the press gallery.

ChRis millmAnBachelor of Applied Science in Environmental Design, 2001

since graduating with qualifications in environmental Design (Architecture) from the university of Canberra in 2001, Chris has designed and executed buildings of great merit, including the griffin Community Centre, Civic Youth Centre, Canberra Centre expansion and Ato tower, valued collectively at over $500m. in addition, he is the national chair of one of the largest architectural practices in the country; Cox Architecture, which has offices in sydney, brisbane, melbourne, Perth and Canberra.

the position of chair is elected by the board and represents acknowledgement of Chris’ capabilities in his chosen field.

Chris currently oversees the ongoing development of section 84 of the Canberra City masterplan; including the final stage, a $300 million development including living, working and entertainment spaces.

Chris’ other notable projects include the award winning ActewAgl headquarters building, and the design and delivery of several masterplans such as Perisher Village, Kingston Foreshore, Woden West, stromlo Forest Park and the suburb of Casey.

sARAh oAKesBachelor of Communication in Journalism, 1998

sarah oakes is an experienced editor who has worked on a number of Australian publications and received many accolades throughout her career. she was the youngest ever recipient of the magazine Publishers’ Awards, editor of the Year Award in 2005.

sarah currently holds the position of editor of sunday life, a Fairfax publication that has a readership of more than 1.6 million.

sarah’s first role in the publishing industry was as the sub-editor of the Foxtel magazine tV guide, she then became the deputy editor of K-Zone, a Pacific magazine’s children’s title. in 2002 sarah was chosen to

launch K-Zone’s sister publication total girl which won the magazine Publishers’ Award in 2004 for “launch of the Year”. After her success on total girl, sarah became the editor of girlfriend magazine where she directed the magazine to five magazine Publishers Awards and reached record breaking circulation and readership figures.

in 2008 sarah became editor of Cleo, where she re-positioned the title and had great success with the Cleo bachelor of the Year campaigns. While at Cleo, sarah was a finalist in the good editor Awards.

sarah is also a freelance writer and has been published in the sydney morning herald, the sunday telegraph, new idea, Voyeur, better homes & gardens and the brag.

miChAel PiggottGraduate Diploma in Librarianship, 1972

michael Piggott is a retired archivist who gained his first love of archives from “Archives and manuscripts”, an elective unit in the graduate Diploma of librarianship at the CCAe in 1971. michael arrived at the CCAe as a national library trainee having graduated with a bachelor of economics (honours) from monash. later he also gained a masters degree in archives administration (unsW) and a graduate bachelor of letters (with merit) from the Anu.

michael’s career has spanned the national library (1972-1978), the War memorial (1978-1988), the national Archives (1988-1998), and the university of melbourne (1998-2008). When michael retired, he was university

archivist and manager, cultural collections group at the university of melbourne.

michael has been closely involved with the archives literature profession and sector, having published widely and refereed archival science journals, textbooks and anthologies. michael is a laureate of the Australian society of Archivists, a three time recipient of its mander Jones Award, a former editor of the journal Archives and manuscripts and continues to serve on its editorial board.

on retirement, michael was awarded an Australian Prime minister’s Centre fellowship to locate relevant documents on prime ministers in the Anu archives and noel butlin Archives Centre. his writing based on hawke was a finalist in the 2010 AbR Calibre Prize for an outstanding essay.

teD QuinlAn AmBachelor of Arts in Accounting, 1976

ted Quinlan came to Canberra from melbourne in 1963 to pursue his AFl career. having left school at the age of 15, ted had received minimal formal education, so enrolled at Canberra technical College and obtained a Certificate in Commerce. he then enrolled in an accounting degree at the CCAe. in 1976 ted received the Australian society of Accountants’ award as that year’s outstanding graduate and later became a part-time tutor in Accounting.

ted later joined the ACt electricity Authority where he rose through the ranks. in 1987 he was given carriage of the establishment of Actew (ACt electricity and Water) and spent a number of years as Actew’s deputy Ceo, then Ceo for 18 months.

in 1991 ted was named Australia’s Public sector Accountant of the Year by the Accountant magazine.

in 1998 ted contested and won the seat of molonglo in the ACt legislative Assembly. When the AlP won the 2001 election, ted became Deputy Chief minister, treasurer, minister for economic Development and minister for sport. As minister For economic Development, he developed a philosophy for promoting Canberra as the “smart city”, and issued an “economic White Paper”, a blueprint for Canberra’s economic future.

ted was instrumental in the development of stromlo Forest Park, the ACt Academy of sport, the ACt hockey Centre, the tennis Centre, manuka oval and Canberra stadium. ted also co-chaired the task Force that brought the 2008 olympic torch Relay to Canberra.

in 2010 ted was awarded the medal of the order of Australia (Am), for his services to community and his leadership.

eRnA RAtnAningsih Master of Laws, 2009

erna Ratnaningsih is an accomplished legal practitioner. based in Jakarta, erna is currently employed as a public defender for the Jakarta legal Aid institute and indonesian legal Aid Foundation. in this role she works on many high profile cases concerning violations on social, economic and cultural human rights, as well as violations on civil and political rights. Additionally, erna has worked on cases against women and children involving rape, sexual harassment and domestic violence.

erna completed a master of laws at the university of Canberra in 2009. After graduating, she was promoted to chairperson of the indonesian legal Aid Foundation. she is the first woman in 40 years to hold this esteemed position.

erna’s other achievements include speaking engagements and contributions to conferences, workshops, forums, seminars, television shows and magazines; her tireless work drawing the spotlight on a range of issues including human rights, civil liberties, refugee law and women’s rights, among many others.

CRAig sloAnBachelor of Arts in Accounting, 1987

in the 24 years since he graduated from the university with a bachelor Degree in Arts (Accounting), Craig has achieved great success in his field of accounting and as a prominent Canberra business person. he is currently a partner at KPmg, one of the world’s largest professional services firms where he has worked internationally as a senior auditor. As a partner in the firm’s government Advisory services division, Craig is

responsible for the provision of financial management, business and program advisory and taxation services to both public and private sector organisations.

outside of KPmg, Craig has been and continues to be actively involved in a range of business, charity and community activities, including the Canberra business Council (Chairman from 2002 to 2009). he is also the chair of Regional Development Australia ACt, and a board member of the Australian Foundation for mental health Research.

ben snoWBachelor of Arts in Computing Studies, 1986

ben snow is a four time Academy Award nominee (best visual effects), and is currently employed by george lucas’ company industrial light & magic (ilm) based in san Francisco, California.

on completion of his studies at the university, ben travelled extensively before working as a “runner” for a computer graphics house in london. he later returned to Australia to set up the computer animation department for a company in sydney where he worked on commercials and broadcast idents and openers.

ben left Australia to join ilm in 1994, where his first project was to help create the three-dimensional

computer graphics image of the “enterprise b” for star trek: generations. this version had to intercut seamlessly with the motion control model shot on ilm’s soundstage, one of the first such endeavours for a feature film.

ben’s feature films include Pireates of the Caribbean: on stranger tides, iron man, iron man ii, terminator salvation and star Wars: episode ii “Attack of the Clones”.

in addition to his feature credits, ben has been instrumental in the research and development required for the groundbreaking images seen in twister, Deep impact and Pearl harbor.

Alice is the owner and director of Peppercorn Promotions (PCP), a company she co-founded in 2005 to meet the need for premium promotional staff within the marketing and communications industry. since its inception, the business has grown from an annual sales base of $250,000 to $2.4 million in the 2011 financial

year. PCP now employs seven full time staff and approximately 400 promotional staff nationwide.

the PCP client list includes a range of well-known companies, such as: optus, telstra, Peugeot, Kelloggs, Kimberly Clark, samsung, Vodafone, Ford and Kraft.

Alice has over 14 years experience in the marketing industry, having also worked for mcCann eriksson, JWt and the haygarth group.

mARDi steWARt Bachelor of Arts in Communication/Public Relations, 1993

mardi stewart is currently employed by the Department of immigration and Citizenship (DiAC) as director of internal and strategic communications where she is responsible for the development and implementation of communication activities for the 8,000 DiAC staff located in 80 locations around the globe.

mardi’s experience has spanned the public, private and not-for-profit sectors. Following university she worked as a liaison officer for the Deputy Prime minister, the hon. brian howe. mardi has also held the position of manager of public affairs at the sydney Children’s

hospital where her contribution significantly increased the profile of the hospital; through the management of communications for the $230m redevelopment of the hospital, and the organisation of high profile special visits for sick children by her majesty Queen elizabeth ii, michael Jackson, the manchester united Football team, the Corrs and savage garden.

in 2000 mardi founded her own communications consultancy and for the next 10 years provided communications and media related services to over 20 long term business clients.

mardi is the recipient of the Public Relations institute of Australia (PRiA) 2009 golden target Award for the best community relations campaign, and the 2000 nsW Central Coast Young businesswoman of the Year Award.

CAtheRine toWnsenDBachelor of Applied Science in Environmental Design, 1980

Catherine townsend’s contribution to architecture and the built environment in Canberra is outstanding. graduating from the university of Canberra in 1980, Catherine has worked in many notable architectural practices including mgt, Cox Architecture, butterworth Russell (now may Russell), Peckvonhartel and Peter Freeman Architects.

Catherine has been involved in the design of many notable Canberra buildings, including one national

Circuit for Prime minister and Cabinet. her residential and education projects include the space Apartments, the ijong, ipima and lowanna street Apartments, nicholls Primary school, university of Canberra special Purposes building and Federal Police College, barton. Catherine also led the redevelopment of Woden Plaza.

Catherine is a life Fellow of the Royal institute of Architects and was elected President of the ACt Chapter in 2002 - the second woman to hold the position. her re-election for a second term in 2004 is a testimony to the respect afforded to Catherine by her peers. her contributions to the profession of architecture have been extraordinary and span practice, teaching, policy development, and advocacy.

simone tRegeAgleBachelor of Arts in Communication/General Communication, 1992

simone tregeagle is deputy Ceo at Rt health Fund, a 122 year old organisation, where she runs the sales, service and marketing division with staff across three locations. she is also the author of two books; the smart girls guide to money and smart Couples guide to money – both of which were best-sellers in their title categories.

before working with Rt health, simone had success as an editor and copywriter in her own company,

ink Communications, where she edited 40 books and wrote for many Australian and international companies.

simone has also worked as a brand and communication strategist at heywood innovation and prior to this, as a fundraiser for the Foundation for national Parks and Wildlife in sydney, raising funds to assist in the preservation of natural habitats and endangered species. on leaving the Foundation, simone took to a business opportunity to capitalise on the 2000 sydney olympics, proposing a joint venture to overhaul a school excursion accommodation program, capitalising on an estimated market of 250,000 school children that would visit sydney for the olympics.

2011 FinAlists: DistinguisheD Alumni AWARD FoR CommunitY seRViCesusAn AlexAnDeRBachelor of Education (Early Childhood), 1990

susan has been an active member of the Canberra community through her membership of the Rotary Club of Canberra sunrise and in her exemplary work in teaching by example the value of community to her students at telopea Park school.

in 2007, susan established an interact Club of Rotary for her students and together they have formed a close relationship with a disadvantaged school at Port Resolution on the island of tanna, Vanuatu. susan and her students have sent books and stationery to the school and raised funds to purchase bookcases. they are now working on a project to raise $80,000 to construct a school assembly building which includes a library and a kitchen. to date, susan and her 14 year old students have raised $50,000 towards their April 2012 target. susan has visited the Port Resolution school at her own expense and in her own time on five occasions to secure planning approvals and support from the local community. the relationships that have been formed between the Port Resolution school and telopea Park school are highly valued and will have a lasting impact on the students at each of the schools.

susan’s community service has been publicly recognised; in 1992 she was a recipient of a uK/Australia science Fellowship for her innovative contribution to science education, and in 2000 she was selected to be a torchbearer for the sydney olympics.

WAYne APPlebeeBachelor of Social Science in Justice Studies, 2010

Wayne Applebee is the managing director of the narragunnawali Aboriginal Corporation, a role he was appointed to in 2010. the Corporation was formed to implement the “Circuit breaker Program” which was developed by Wayne to support the rehabilitation of indigenous prisoners in the corrective services system.

Wayne initially commenced a bachelor of law at the university of Canberra, but felt that as a lawyer he may only be able to help a small number of people; it was the system that needed to be changed. on changing

degrees to social science in Justice studies, Wayne developed the Circuit breaker Program after discovering the limited options available to a magistrate, when it came to sentencing.

less than a year after graduating, Wayne is already making a difference in the community. he presented his program to the Federal government house standing Committee on Aboriginal and torres strait islander Affairs and it was following this that the narragunnawali Aboriginal Corporation was formed.

Wayne is also a lecturer in a number of units at the university of Canberra including indigenous Cultural studies and Aboriginals and the law.

helen Flynn is a dedicated and generous member of the Canberra community, having volunteered a great deal of time and resources to support our community over the last 30 years. helen’s efforts and commitments range from volunteering as a swimming teacher, volunteering at sports programs for children with disabilities,

telephone counselling and volunteer counselling for the for parents of drug users.

helen has also contributed greatly to the community of Christmas island, where she was located for three years. here she initiated and ran a women’s craft group, swimming lessons, and a film group. she also lobbied for, and then ran radio programs on sunday evenings and worked as a volunteer at the Christmas island Area school teaching english, in addition to running classes for school holiday programs.

samantha Keane has dedicated herself to community education since graduating from the university in 2004. she has worked in the most remote communities in Fiji, Papua new guinea, south Africa and currently in east Pilbara, Western Australia, where she travels for 8 hours to work as a project facilitator with World Vision. in this position samantha consults with local indigenous communities to plan and implement one-on-one support for parents and carers. she is also working to encourage community members to advocate for their own and their families’ rights.

Prior to taking on this role, samantha spent two years in Papua new guinea, with the Png education Advocacy network, where she planned and implemented educational experience, language and literacy surveys, as well as community feedback sessions. samantha also worked with save the Children in Papua new guinea, on gender policy development and gender program development.

in south Africa, samantha worked with hiV affected orphans and promoted children’s rights and literacy.

Despite the tyranny of distance, samantha has continued to expand her learning by undertaking a master in Applied Anthropology and Participatory Development at the Anu.

for teachers and educators. the website offers an extensive, free, database of professional development opportunities, promoting lifelong learning and currency in the teaching profession.

David recently completed a fundraising drive for Camp Quality, pledging to run the marathon Des sables, a 251 kilometre race through the sahara Desert.

the marathon Des sables is the toughest foot race on the planet. it takes over 7 days to complete, with temperatures as low as 5 degrees celsius at night and as high as 52 degrees by day.

helen swan is a musician and music educator, and has worked as a singer, conductor and chorus master for several groups in Canberra. For many years helen was the Director of music at Canberra grammar Junior school but in 2002 left to broaden her musical endeavours within the community.

From 2003 to 2008 helen was director of the Canberra Youth music Choirs and her singing group, the Resonants, perform regularly with proceeds going to charity.

their 2004 Christmas Concert raised funds for galilee inc, a not-for-profit organisation providing services to disadvantaged Canberra children, to help rebuild facilities that were destroyed in the 2003 bushfires.

in 2010 the proceeds from the Resonants Christmas Concert were donated to the the home in Queanbeyan, a 24-hour accommodation support facility for people with severe mental illness. other fundraising activities include the Canberra musicians tsunami Concert, where proceeds of $7,000 were given to the Australia Red Cross Asia Quake and tsunami Appeal.

Katie taylor has developed a successful career as an author, having written and published three novels.

Katie’s first book, a children’s book titled the land of bad Fantasy, was released in 2006 during the second year of her undergraduate study. this book has since been translated and published in Romania.

in 2009 her first adult series the Fallen moon trilogy was released in Australia. these three books - the Dark griffin, the griffin’s Flight and the griffin’s War have also been published in Canada and the usA by Penguin Publishing. the first book in this trilogy has been translated and published in the Czech Republic;

the sequels are due to follow in the Czech Republic within the next 12 months.

in 2011 Katie signed a contract with harperCollins for the publication of a further three books in the griffin series; the Risen sun trilogy for publication release in 2012. these three books - the shadows heir, the shadowed throne and the shadow’s heart are also under contract with Penguin in the usA for publication in 2013.

Katie has been invited to participate in a number of writing conference panel discussions including at this year’s ComicCon in san Diego.

Katie is currently working on a new young adult series as well as undertaking further study in a masters of information studies at the university of Canberra.
