Mapping Oilfield Infrastructure with UAV

• Application of high resolution photogrammetry to seismic survey planning and reclamation

• Application of quadcopter to facility inspection – leaking flare stack

• Larger scale thermal and photogrammetry with high accuracy georeferencing


• UAV (shothole mapping)– Galaxy UAV Penguin fixed wing– Wingspan; 1.8 meter, Endurance; 75 minutes, 12 MP RGB camera, 4 cm GSD from 400 feet– Lawn mower patterns

• UAV (Flare Stack Inspection and Thermal test video)– DJI Inspire 1 VTOL Quadcopter, 4 K RGB camera, and Flir Vue Pro R 640, 30 Hz– Vertical flights manually flown for inspection– Manual and autonomous flights for thermal video

• Processing software - Pix4D

• Permit requirement– FAA Part 107 Licensed pilots within the provisions and requirements– Property owner’s permission to fly over

Flare Stack Inspection

• While our drone contractor was collecting the baseline imagery (pre shothole), one of nearby field locations requested that we send our UAV contractor to with a flare stack inspection…

• The flare was not safe to inspect without understanding the origin of the leak

• Utilized the quadcopter drone to inspect the full length of the stack in high resolution video

• Quickly determined the leak was confined to an area that could easily be fixed without risk

Timing

• … now we know we have a tool that works but at the time we weren’t sure about ground temperatures and variable near surface moisture content and how that might effect our results

• The plan was to start in S Texas when temperatures cooled off– 45F ambient temperature and 120F fluid buried 3-4 feet

• Following the S Texas project, we would move up North– We chose to wait until after the ground began to thaw worried about the

insulated properties of the <32F near surface

– 45F ambient temperature and 200F fluid buried 6-8 feet

• UAV– Fixed Wing Multi-Sensor Custom Designed Drones and Flight Controllers– 65-75 minute flights (appx. 1 sq. Mile) @ 116 meters AGL flight altitude– target ground speed @18meters/second
