CSU Channel Islands - Camarillo, CA

• Newest campus in the CSU (about 12 years young)

• fastest growing University in the U.S. • about 5,000 students; will grow to

20,000 • Hispanic Serving Institution • honors and celebrates its Chumash

heritage • strong academic programs • interdisciplinary learning part of Mission


• sits at the base of the Santa Monica mountains • sits on the edge of the Oxnard plain, a

productive agricultural region • near Naval Base Ventura County, home to

three Naval commands with federal research labs

• partner with the Channel Islands National Park through out Santa Rosa Island Research Station

• member of NOAA’s Collaborative Center for Unmanned Systems

County to become an official FAA Test Site (2013)

• Partnered with stakeholders throughout Ventura County to become an official FAA Center of Excellence for UAS (2014)




• Supported the Ventura County Office of Education’s creation of a UAS Academy for high school students





• Developed unmanned systems (terrestrial, marine, and aerial) to support faculty research






• Signed Educational Partnership Agreements with the commands at Naval Base Ventura County to support STEM innovation and education





• Signed Educational Partnership Agreements with the commands at Naval Base Ventura County to support STEM innovation and education

• Joined NOAA’s Collaborative Center for Unmanned Technologies


• In 2013, campus crafted and passed a Policy on the Use of Unmanned Aerial Systems on campus

• Also, established a governance system for use of UAS - the Unmanned Systems Board

• In 2015, the CSU used the Channel Islands governance system as a model for all other campuses in the CSU

• file COA application for environmental research, application for Section 333 exemption for education & training (December 2015)

• begin teaching UAS courses, fly indoors (Spring 2016)

• research with Navy, using their Section 333; the Port of Hueneme

• develop infrastructure for AUVSI student chapter • support AMP SoCal’s efforts to grow the UAS

industry in Southern California • develop public-private partnerships to support
