MAIDEN ISSUE VOLUME 1 2009

In the morning of the 25th of July, 2009, the College of Fellows held its first general membership meeting for the fiscal year 2009-2010 at the Teatro Arkitekto at the 7th

Floor of the UAP Headquarters.

The change of venue to the theater (from the regular venue in the past at the 5th floor of UAP HQ) hopes to bring in more members to attend the GMMs—one of the thrust of this new board. Further, the regular monthly meetings will incorporate fellowships at least once every quarter that will be held in the evenings.

Plans, Projects and Programs of the new board were unveiled by Chancellor Noralita C. Dumlao, FUAP and met with enthusiasm when suggestions from the membership flew in on other possible venues for the succeeding meetings and fellowships.

The meeting ended on a light note as parlor games were played and prizes awarded to the winning teams.

Warm greetings!

It is with great delight that I introduce the maiden issue of Fountainhead, the latest reincarnation of the official monthly publication of the UAP College of Fellows.

Fountainhead's main objective is to keep the members of the College updated and informed about our regular activities, as well as to provide a venue where we can

share our thoughts and opinions on matters relating but not limited to architecture. With a membership composed of the UAP’s most distinguished members, the

College of Fellows is truly a fountainhead and well spring of ideas, opinions and exemplars of character from which the general membership can learn from.

I would also like to praise the valuable efforts of Vice Chancellor Armin B. Sarthou, fuap who is our designated Editor-in-Chief, and new fellow Emmanuel A.

Litonjua, fuap as Managing Editor, for getting this project off the ground.

I do hope all of us will support Fountainhead. Let me also take this opportunity to encourage all the members of the College to contribute articles and opinions, thus

making Fountainhead a reflection and representation of the UAP College of Fellows as a whole.

May the Great Architect of the Universe bless us always!

What does it mean to be a Fellow of the UAP?

Perhaps many of you have asked the same question, and tried to locate the significance of the title in the entire scheme of things. Doubtless, you may have looked at your elevation to Fellow as a great honor at the time of conferment. After that initial period of euphoria, though, you may have come to the conclusion that the title FUAP actually had little effect on your lives, and shortly thereafter, conveniently forgot to attend the monthly meetings. A number of you may have continued to enjoy the activities, relishing in the many opportunities for fellowship offered by this micro, chapter-sized organization. A smaller few actually internalized the role, playing their parts as “elderly statesmen” of the organization, putting their two cents’ worth wherever they felt it would do some good.

Think about this, though. Elevation to UAP Fellow is an honor reserved only for the top two percent of architects’ population. By that measure alone, it can be ascertained that attaining the honor is no mean feat, considering the stringent qualification requirements and the tedious process involved. In fact, and for many of us, this process required that there would absolutely be no dissentions in the voting by the Jury of the College, a practice which has since been thankfully amended. Nonetheless, the screening remains stringent.

And here is one other fact worth reflecting upon. Your FUAP title is a distinction recognized not only by our organization, but by all other architectural organizations around the world.

It is, however, not an honor without commitments.

Architect Francisco “Bobby” T. Mañosa, fuap, in all his years of practice of the profession, and with selfless dedication, has successfully instilled in the Filipino architect, the pride of true Philippine Architecture, shown not only in the façade of numerous structures he designed, but also in the manner by which he infused Filipino culture into the spaces he planned and every detail of his creations.

He has shared his patriotic thoughts and aspirations to the Filipino youth through countless lectures and talks that give inspiration to future architects and artists, to his peers and the general public.

His internationally-renowned architectural and planning works give the UAP and the country great pride. As a committed and active member of the United Architects of the Philippines, he is also widely known for his highly ethical conduct of practice, with integrity and dignity as an architect, and as an individual.

Green Forum 2009 is a 2-day in-depth discussions and presentations on the green and sustainable building design principles and techniques within and beyond our shores.

This is in line with the move of dynamic building design professionals to promote Green Architecture in the Philippines.

As Uncle Ben once said in the movie Spiderman, “with great honor comes great responsibility”. Our charter National President Bert Nuke would say that the responsibilities are clearly stated in the newly amended UAP Bylaws, to wit: attendance to the regular monthly COF meetings at least twice in a year, presenting yourself properly during meetings (including the observance of a proper dress code), wearing your medallions during official formal functions, observing proper decorum during honor dinners. But the deeper responsibilities lie in our intrinsic role as elders of the organization (not to say that all of us are aged), and go well beyond simple matters of decorum. As UAP Fellows, we are expected to give light and guidance to the organization, and function as the organization’s moral compass in matters pertaining to the profession. The title calls upon us to personify all that our younger architects hope to be.

Having served the profession and the organization in various capacities, however, has caused many of us to quickly dismiss prospects of additional organizational responsibilities as superfluous. As veterans who have served as either chapter or national officers, it would indeed be tempting to say that our work is done, and that younger people should now take on the cudgels and do the remaining tasks. This reasoning, however, may not be true for COF members for two reasons: first, there will always be a need for seasoned people to do higher level work; and second, like professors in University, one’s wisdom often grows deeper with the onset of years, making it even more imperative that we share our gifts and accumulated wisdom as we age. This way, the organization is able to benefit from the collective wisdom of its senior members, and with this systematic passing on of wisdom, we are assured that our organization is always able to tackle the myriad concerns that have perennially beset the practice.

So it is now established that we do have continuing responsibilities. And all for what, one may ask? UAP work is thankless as it is unrelenting, and it would be easy to rationalize ourselves out of continuing service. For instance, it would be convenient to say that meetings aren’t interesting at all, and don’t offer anything of substance. Or that one would always be able to find something better to do during the occasional Saturday meeting. We may abhor the meeting content and totally hate the politics, but it will be useful to remember that whatever the organization has become is in huge part due to what we do, or what we don’t do. And the motivation for us to continue working to make things better can be as simple as our faith and conviction that our College of Fellows, and indeed the entire UAP, is still worth the effort.

The rewards can be as simple as the sparkle in the eyes of our younger colleagues as they begin to behold, in us, the architects that they have always wanted to be.

And that, indeed, is priceless.
