The Embassy of the United Arab Emirates in Washington, DC hosted a three day conference from November 24 to 26 for UAE students currently enrolled at universities in the United States. The “UAE Student Forum 2011” provided attendees the rare opportunity to network with their fellow students, connect with officials from the UAE, and meet with top rated UAE public and private companies. The 2011 forum, “Today’s Students, Tomorrow’s Leaders” is an initiative of UAE Ambassador to the United States, YousefAl Otaiba with the intention of providing UAE students with real world tools, information and op-portunities to use in their future careers. Several high ranking UAE officials and representatives from various United States departments and agencies joined the weekend’s events and offered their mentorship, services their respective offices can provide, dis-cussed and answered any issues and concerns. Ambassador Yousef Al Otaiba remarking on the coordination of the forum said, "For the future of our country, we need to give our youth all the tools necessary to succeed. These are tomorrow’s leaders and it’s our re-sponsibility to ensure these students receive guidance and opportunities to excel in their chosen fields for the good of our country and themselves” Ambassador Al Otaiba added, “I’m very impressed by the turnout of so many students and the coordination of this event. I’d like to especially thank our colleagues from the UAE who flew all the way to Washington and for providing our students with such valuable information and resources”. The three day forum took place at the Omni hotel in Washington, DC, filled with activities, workshops and a job fair with 20 UAE based company representatives who offered information on possible job opportunities. On January 26, 2012, HE Yousef Al Otaiba, UAE Ambassador to the US, hosted a reception for HE Sheikha Lubna Bint Khalid Al Qasimi, UAE Min-ister of Foreign Trade, on the occasion of her weeklong visit to Washington, DC. Sheikha Lubna spent the week meeting with senior US government offi-cials, business organizations, think tanks, and area students. She was re-

ceived at the Embassy by UAE diplomats, Embassy staff, and over 75 stu-dents.

Sheikha Lubna addressed the students with an inspirational speech that explained her experiences as a student in the US and her different roles in the private sector leading to her previous appointment as Minister of Economy, to her current role as Minister of Foreign Trade.

Sheikha Lubna was visiting the US to reaffirm the increasingly strong bilateral economic and trade ties between the US and the UAE. The UAE is the largest export market for the US in the Middle East. US exports to the UAE were more than $14 billion in 2011. Total bilateral trade between the two countries was over $16 billion in 2011 – an over 20% increase from the same period in 2010. UAE investment into the US continues to increase, and there are currently over 800 American firms doing business in the UAE.

In January 2012, Sheikha Lubna participated in US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's Inaugural International Council Meeting on Women’s Busi-ness Leadership and met with United States Trade Representative Ambas-sador Ron Kirk as well as Secretary of Transportation Ray Lahood. She

also spoke to The Council of Women World Leaders Ministerial Initiative at the Woodrow Wilson Center for Scholars to discuss the empowerment of women throughout the Middle East.

We all do our best to success while at-tending university. However, many students encounter difficulties at various times during their studies. The most important thing is to recognize your challenges and areas for im-provement and seek support to remedy the weaknesses.

Every university has a student support service center to assist students in need of it. For instance, at the Student Success Center at Arizona State University, the theme of “Success and Nothing Less” guides the efforts of those trying to help students overcome par-ticular challenges and difficulties. Through this center, you are able to receive FREE tu-toring in any subject. In addition, ASU, like many other universities, offers courses that will

help to experience the university and give you the knowledge, skills and motivation to achieve your academic goals. Your university likely has some-thing very similar in place. The key is to find out what resources are available to assist you in over-coming your particular challenges

The purpose of a study plan is keeping the student on track for graduation.

Usually a student will meet with his or her academic advisor when they are a Freshman and create a plan-using the list of core require-ments and electives. In creating this plan, the student will be able to see all classes that they need to take and when to take them. This helps with future class registrations and in tracking how many semesters they will need to graduate

Your scholarship requires that you submit this plan to your advisor at the UAE Embassy-Cultural Division so your advisor can help you as well when it’s time to register for classes or in other cases. On the following page you can find a sample study plan.

The Abu Dhabi Police Scholarship Update

Abu Dhabi Police (ADP) Scholarship is one of eleven programs currently managed by the Cultural Mission of the UAE Embassy in Washington DC. In terms of size, the ADP scholarship is the sec-ond largest UAE- sponsored student academic scholarship following the scholarship allocated under the umbrella of the Ministry of Higher Education. Currently, there are 363 active students, represent-ing 23% of the total UAE-sponsored students in the US.

During the last 3 years, the ADP scholarship students have increased considerably, as a result of ADP making education and scientific qualification a pre-requisite for selection and admission of new recruits as well as for ranking and promotion. the demand to join the Abu Dhabi Police work force has also increased by new graduates. The diversity in experience and quality in skills of most of those incoming students clearly reflect the adapted policy of the ADP Education Administration to develop a more efficient and a highly effective police man power which should possess the highest level

Tens of students are granted decrees every year to pursue English training and academic degrees in a variety of study field. The vast majority of these students are enrolled in police and security re-lated areas as illustrated in the following diagram

The largest percentages of students are studying Criminal Justice and represents about 23% of the total. Second in size is the business administration major that includes all business and manage-ment tracks such as finance, accounting, management information science, and so forth; all to-gether stands for 17% of the majors considered. Both of engineering majors and English language training only take up 9% of the pie each.
