WHAT IS THE CAMPAIGN FOR UAB?

President Ray Watts has set a goal for UAB to be one of the most dynamic and productive universities of the 21st century and attain our vision to be an internationally renowned research university—a first choice for education and health care.

This means setting priorities, investing our resources carefully and inviting partners to join us in The Campaign for UAB: Give Something, Change Everything—a $1 billion effort that marks the largest, most comprehensive fundraising initiative in the university’s history.

During this campaign, we will raise funds to enable us to expand educational and cultural opportunities, advance research and patient care and fuel economic development. We can accomplish this by aligning our resources with our aspirations:

• Fund scholarships that remove financial barriers to a UAB education;• Create endowments that attract faculty at the top of their fields;• Expand residential, teaching and athletic facilities to accommodate increasing enrollment

and expanding programs;• Invest in new technologies that support teaching, research and global outreach;• Underwrite efforts to commercialize discoveries; • Build and expand patient-care facilities to improve the health of residents in our region and

beyond; and• Support arts and cultural programs that enrich our lives and strengthen the fabric of our

community.

UAB has long thrived on collaboration and shared progress, and we are optimistic that we will be a first choice for philanthropy for those who believe an investment in UAB is an investment in our city, state and nation.

Answering the CallTAKING NURSING BEYOND WALLS: Improving access and quality health care for families and communities

PREPARING FUTURE NURSE LEADERS, THROUGH INNOVATION AND COLLABORATION, IS A UAB SCHOOL OF NURSING TRADITION.

Partnered with UAB Health System (the state’s only Magnet designated hospital for nursing excellence), we prepare our students to participate in world-class clinical care alongside world-renowned nurse faculty and researchers. But our call is to take the power of nursing beyond these walls. Today’s nurses must direct entire care-teams and coordinate across all health care settings with seamless transition. Our faculty and students are answering the call by developing and implementing better ways of providing quality care for patients in hospital settings, residential facilities and at home. These nursing innovations improve the health and quality of life for all of us, here and around the world.

Page 5: UAB School of Nursing Campaign Priorities and Goals

We are leading the charge for nursing without walls, transforming how and where family and patient-centered health care is delivered.

TO MEET CHANGING HEALTH CARE NEEDS WE MUST:

• Educate more nurses, nurse faculty and nurse researchers.

• Expand space for students, faculty and researchers.

• Bring together students, faculty and the community in innovative ways to seek solutions, collaborate, learn and share.

• Prepare nurses to confidently manage the growing complexities of health care for their patients.

It’s about radically transforming our learning spaces to effectively prepare 21st century nurses to excel in

fast-changing, evidence-based, technology-driven healthcare settings.

A Building Transformation

AN INNOVATIVE INTERDISCIPLINARY RESEARCH UNIVERSITY and world-renowned academic health center, UAB is ranked fifth in the world for its collaborative science and clinical work in the areas of medicine, nursing, dentistry, health professions, optometry, and public health. The UAB School of Nursing is leading scientific research to improve care and outcomes in oncology, pediatrics, minority health, international nursing, HIV/AIDS care, occupational health, and aging and palliative care. To succeed, we seek philanthropic investments in endowed chairs and professorships for faculty to accelerate and sustain discovery and attract the country’s foremost nurse researchers.

AS THE CHALLENGES AND DEMANDS IN HEALTH CARE INTENSIFY, the demand for an educated nursing workforce increases. Since 1950, the UAB School of Nursing has been preparing nurses to become leaders in the fast-changing world of health care. Ranked 21st in overall graduate programs and among the top 5 percent of nursing schools nationwide, we offer opportunities for students to learn and investigate that are on par with the best in the world. To successfully keep pace with growing health care needs, we seek endowed scholarships to remove financial barriers for a diverse group of students and to attract the brightest minds into nursing.

THE UAB SCHOOL OF NURSING IS ENGAGED WITH THE GLOBAL COMMUNITY, discovering and applying the latest research and evidence to promote the highest quality and best clinical care for patients and their families. Nursing students and faculty are pioneering and implementing these transformational clinical and research initiatives here at home, and across the globe. To succeed and sustain this impact, we seek endowments for program support and current-use funds to launch innovative global programs.

In February 2014, Deborah Kirk Walker, DNP and Assistant Professor of Nursing (featured at left) worked with faculty at the Kamuzu College of Nursing in Malawi to integrate oncology into their curriculum and provide support for oncology nursing education, including developing an ongoing collaboration and partnership between the nursing programs at KCN and UAB.

THE BARRETT BROCK MACKAY FLORENCE NIGHTINGALE EXHIBIT, established with a campaign gift from Rick and Barrett Brock MacKay and the Harry B. and Jane H. Brock Foundation, showcases personal letters of Florence Nightingale that resulted in vast improvements in the sanitary conditions of India and the specialized care of wounded Crimean War soldiers. The exhibit serves as a constant stimulus for students and faculty to take bold steps towards finding health care solutions for the patients, families and communities they serve. We seek additional philanthropic investments in endowments and current-use funds to provide global service opportunities for our students and faculty.
