Coach CHARUE DANIEL

Dr. Charles Daniel accepted the challenge of putting together Western Kentucky University's first-ever women's volleyball team in 1981 and promptly went out and tackled a rugged schedule with a group of inexperienced, but dedicated and hardworking athletes.

The result of that inaugural effort on the court was a 2-18 record. But, it was a beginning, and things progressed quickly last fali. when his charges tackled another rigorous schedule and emerged with a vastly improved 23-23 record.

A native of Norfolk, Va., he established himseH as a successful head coach at that city's Eastern Academy High School. Among his credentials are eight years of experience as head coach of both men's and women's basketball teams. In addition, he coached his women's softball team to a state title and went on to finish eighth at the nationals. Daniel also served as women's volleyball coach for four years, leeding his squads to first, second and third place finishes in league competition.

Daniel received his B.S. in physical education/health/recreation at Old Domir'lion in 1969, his M .S. in physical education/ health/ recreation from Rhode Island in 75, his Ed.S. in adaptive physical education at George Peabody in 79 and his Ed.D. in adaptive physical education from Vanderbilt in 1980.

He and his wife, the former Tabitha Carwile, have one son, Wesley, 2.

1983 Outlook If Western Kentucky's young volleyball squad continues on schedule, Hilltopper

fans are in for a real treat. The pattern is one of continued improvement. Western first began intercollegiate competition on the volleyball courts just two

years ago. WKU's inaugural 1981 season produced a 2-18 record. But, last year's season was quite a bit more successfull, as the Lady Toppers posted a 23-23 mark despite a rugged schedule. And, third-year Head Coach Charlie Daniel is looking to keep the momentum going and finish the '83 season with an even better score.

Youth may prove to be a two-edged sword in Daniel's fight for a winning season. The Lady Topper pre-season roster is made up of three juniors, four sophomores and four rookies, with the remaining spots to be filled with " walk-on" players. That could be a definite advantage down the road, but the Tops may be a bit short on experience for the '83 campaign.

Daniel will be counting on veterans Mary Jo Kopatich, a 5-7 striker from Newburgh's (Ind.) Castle High, and Kris BeeBee, a 5-10 center blocker from Aurora, (III.) West Senior High, to lead the way. Also expected to see quite a bit of action will be junior Tessie Oliver and sophomore Maura Lyons.

The 1983 schedule may prove to be the Tops' toughest yet. It includes seven tournament appearances, including two 'Topper Smashes" to be held in Western's E.A. Diddle Arena and the first-ever Sun Belt Conference Tournament, which will also be held on the WKU campus (Nov. 11 -12).
