The mission of universities cannot be limited to the graduation of students

and the generation of new knowledge: they must also act as active partners

in society. In order to attain this purpose it is imperative that our potential

partners – businesses, municipalities, other agents – are fully aware of our

offer not only in terms of services and technology transfer, but also regarding

scientific dissemination, cooperation with the community and the promotion

of culture. A structured portfolio representative of what we have to offer and

who is, at the UA, the right interlocutor is, therefore, an important tool.

cooperationThe University of Aveiro has privileged

partnerships with companies and other national

and international public and private institutions,

cooperating with them in several projects and

programmes in addition to providing a wide

range of services. The University of Aveiro

is nowadays a reference with regards to its

cooperation with the community motivating

social, cultural and economic development.

The University of Aveiro has been participating

actively in the business community in the

areas of research and innovation, developing

products and solutions that support the

advancement of science and technology in

addition to boosting the economy. In this

respect, the institution has already created

structures aimed at promoting and supporting

entrepreneurship and the process of mediating

the transfer of technology and knowledge.

An example of this are UATEC – Unidade

de Transferência de Tecnologia (Technology

Transfer Unit) and IEUA – Incubadora

de Empresas da Universidade de Aveiro

(Business Incubator of the University of Aveiro).

One of the priorities of the institution is

to promote the professional integration

of its graduates also supported by the

development of teaching programmes in

business and entrepreneurial contexts.

One of the projects that has always guided

the University’s actions has been the

development of a strong relationship with

the region in which it operates by making

its know-how available to the community.

The University has recently strengthened

this relationship and established strong

innovative cooperation bonds with several

regional agents and, in particular, with the

11 municipalities forming the Intermunicipal

Community of the Region of Aveiro (CIRA).

creative science park – aveiro regionThe creation of the Creative Science Park –

Aveiro Region (CSP-AR) was one of the

most recent ventures to boost regional

development. The CSP-AR is run by the

Sociedade Anónima PCI – Parque de Ciência

e Inovação S.A., a company which is mostly

held by non-profit organisations including the

University of Aveiro, its largest shareholder.

This structure is oriented towards the creation

of knowledge and the promotion of its use

through the certification of the people and the

work done in partnership with several entities.

At an early stage, 5 key areas of the UA will

be taken into account: Energy, Information

Technologies, Communication and Electronics

(TICE), Agro-industrial, Materials and Sea.

This science and innovation park comprises

the establishment of technology-based

companies as well as the provision of a

distinct set of innovation services.

This is achieved via a formal and functional

articulation with the structures of the

University Campus, a feature that makes

CSP-AR unique at a national level.

18

international cooperation and cooperation within a networkWith regards to cooperation, the University’s

strategy includes its internationalisation and

the attainment of international recognition

based on the creation of knowledge in

collaboration with foreign entities, the

definition of an alliances guideline and the

targeting of geographical areas where

collaboration is a priority, namely concerning

Portuguese-speaking countries. Presently,

the University of Aveiro is an active member

of several international networks and forums.

in addition to measures pertaining to eco-

-efficiency, waste management, the promotion

and study of biodiversity on campus and the

encouragement of sustainable mobility and

accessible tourism, among other initiatives.

The possibility to host events as well as

socio-cultural and scientific initiatives is given

not only to the academic community but also

to other entities.

Some of the services and functionalities that

are made available by the UA are: booking

auditoriums, conference rooms, exhibition

halls and videoconference studios; the

provision of audiovisual support services

(audio and video recording and production)

and videoconference services and support

given to webcast or to printing services.

the campusThe results arising from recent satisfaction

surveys show that much of the UA’s

attractiveness derives from its cultural

environment, the dynamics of the university

life, its infrastructures and the centrality of the

city and the surrounding region.

The university Campus, with 733,000m2

(approximately 90 football fields), is a

miniature city with its green spaces and over

66 buildings purpose-built for teaching and

research, but also distributed in a way that

allows the community to live in and enjoy a

multifunctional space. All of this is possible in

two adjacent campuses, surrounded by the

natural beauty of the Saltpans, overlooking

the estuary and near the city centre.

Displaying building projects signed by

the best national architects, the Santiago

Campus and the Crasto Campus are

landmarks in the region and a showcase

of contemporary Portuguese architecture.

The campuses of Águeda and Oliveira de

Azeméis, where UA’s schools are located, are

also being developed with a great sense of

aesthetics and functionality.

The University of Aveiro is fully aware of the

existing concerns regarding sustainability

and environmental protection and has

been coordinating and developing a set

of measures to boost sustainability on

campus. These measures are addressed

within a strategic project designated as

“Campus Exemplar”. This project includes

idadaudits, environmental impact and control instituteThe IDAD – Institute of Environment and

Development is a non-profit scientific

and technical association of public utility

founded in 1993. IDAD has an extensive

experience and provides integrated support

to environmental needs that companies

have in different areas. Some of the services

provided by IDAD are: strategic and planning

studies, environmental monitoring and

impact, auditing and environmental control,

and indoor environmental quality.

IDAD has broad expertise in the coordination

of multi-sectorial projects ranging from air

quality to water resources, flora and fauna,

landscape, social psychology or public health

working with teams of diverse specialists who

provide different types of intervention:

· Strategic environmental assessment

· Environmental impact assessment

· Development of environmental monitoring

programmes

· Atmospheric pollutants dispersion modelling

The use of the IDAD laboratory, accredited

by IPAC L0313, allows for the inclusion,

whenever possible, of the field work and

analytical components.

66

Page 69: UA enterprises

servicesstrategic and planning studies

It represents the most comprehensive

approach to environment and development.

The acknowledged expertise of the IDAD

has led to its participation in some of the

most important decision-making processes

that have recently occurred in Portugal:

· Evaluation of possible locations for the new

Lisbon airport

· Strategic environmental assessment of the

high speed rail network

· Strategic environmental assessment of the

programme “Portugal Logístico”

· Strategic environmental assessment of

Municipal Master Plans

environmental monitoring and impact

Impact Assessment is the characterisation

of the environmental effects of a certain

unit, i.e. the evaluation of all aspects

pertaining to its impact on the environment.

Throughout the years, IDAD has participated

in the development and monitoring of the

Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA)

process of several types of projects: Industrial

units, business and logistics parks, tourist

developments, waste treatment units, and

thermal power plants.

The preparation of these studies frequently

requires the use of numeric simulation tools:

Studies concerning the dispersion of atmos-

pheric pollutants both locally (ISC, AERMOD)

and regionally as well as acoustic maps.

In the follow-up phase it is necessary to

regularly measure and monitor the real

effects of the projects on the environment

through the implementation of environmental

monitoring programmes. The use of IDAD’s

laboratory allows for the inclusion, whenever

possible, of the field work and sampling

components.

uinfocThe Integrated Unit of Continuing Education, UINFOC, founded in 2010, is a centre that aims

to carry out the scientific, educational and administrative coordination, and to support lifelong

training and research activities for traditional and non-traditional audiences in UA.

The UINFOC is the interface unit of the University of Aveiro with its Departments and

Schools, and of these with municipalities, businesses and society in general in the field of

academic training. Its mission is to foster the relationships and cooperation between these

infrastructures, in collaboration with the various stakeholders. The goal is to develop, propose,

organise and manage the development of training courses for traditional and non-traditional

audiences, which may or may not lead to an academic degree. Therefore, it contributes to the

training of working adults via the promotion of Ongoing, Permanent and Lifelong Learning.

The UINFOC also promotes the development of support services and structures directed

towards the monitoring of these audiences, taking into account their specific characteristics.

It begins with their arrival at the University, continues along their path as students and acts as

a connector in their lives after university. With this process, UINFOC allows for the possibility of

more than one admission into University.

UINFOC also acts as a support/information and meeting/socialising centre for these audiences

in the district of Aveiro. It favours continuous and flexible training initiatives and enables

collaboration between the University and the Community in which it operates.
