From the Chairman Many years ago, in my days as a

reluctant churchgoer, I had to listen to a vicar who weekly gave vent from the pulpit to contumely directed at non-attendees and yet wondered why his already small congregation continued to dwindle. Preaching to the converted is one thing but berating those who are not present seems the height of self-defeating stupidity. I was for a moment in an otherwise harmonious day at the Regional Conference (at which we Singers were a triumph, it has to be said) put in mind of the good Reverend, and determined that despite a lifelong “talent” for telling others what to do I would try not to be guilty of the same failing. Therefore, this is a thank you – a whole bunch of thank-you s in fact – to the less sung: all those who make time to come to monthly meetings; those who make the new and the nervous feel welcome; those who take the trouble to read the Newsletter and Notice Board thoroughly, and those who submit photos to Richard; those whose loyalty to the Groups, their Leaders and U3A in general is inestimable; in other words to the “ordinary” members, who are, of course, wonderfully extraordinary. Thank you, too, today to Bob, who has been steadfastly standing in the wings for too long. Way to go !

Card Making 1 — As always there were two busy

mornings with a good chat over coffee and then down to making striking cards. We welcomed a new member on Tuesday who surprised herself with her first card which was very classy. Several events were covered on both mornings from "Welcome to your New Home" to"Golden Wedding". Once again two happy mornings. In September we will meet on Tuesday 2nd and Wednesday 3rd. Bookworms — We had a lively discussion on our book of the month, "Me Before You", which covered a very topical subject, that of assisted suicide. We all agreed that unless we were faced with such a situation, we did not know what our feelings would be on this. Our next read is "The King's Deception", with a 500 year-old secret about Elizabeth 1, uncovered and brought into the 21st century, with spies, traitors and assassins, and a Secret Society involved into the puzzle. Bridge - We have a very friendly Bridge group who

meet every Friday afternoon. If you can play Bridge but perhaps have not done so for a little while then please come and join us. I must say, however, that we do not teach it and therefore you must have some

knowledge of the game to be able to join. You would be made very welcome. We start each Friday at 1.30pm at the Bridge Club in Field Street and we pay £2 each week and for that you get good company, a very interesting game and refreshments.

News — Interest Groups — Visits and Reports

Card Making 2 — Thank you again ladies for coming

to my house to make such wonderful cards. Inspired by a Charles Rennie Mackintosh idea that I found, the group folded circles and made beautiful cards, which could be used for a variety of occasions. It always amazes me how we are all given the same items and produce such different cards. Refreshed by tea and coffee we then followed origami style folding of circles, called dahlia folding, to make our next card. Thank you Mary Earl for lending me your magazine with the original idea in it. It certainly is a very useful card to have for any occasion. We meet again on the third Monday in August. Please let me know if you are not coming by the week before as this allows us to invite, as guest of the month, ladies who are on the waiting list for this group. We welcomed Pat Sandos as our guest member this month. Remember Card Making Group 2 if you find an idea on a card that we can make bring it along and share your ideas. See you in August. NEW GROUP—BEGINNERS PENCIL SKETCHING A new member, Diane Bulley, (who is deaf) is offering a cumulative Beginners Pencil Sketching course that is suitable for all abilities. It will be available as a House Group to 4 members only and will be held from Monday to Thursday during the first week of each month, followed by a “Show and Chat” meeting for all on the fourth Monday in the month in the restaurant at “Seasons” Garden Centre, Cranford Road, Burton Latimer. Canals & Waterways — Yet again we had a

beautiful day for our boat trip at Market Harborough. We hired two boats. There was a slight delay due to a technical difficulty but this was soon resolved. The boats were well kitted out and we chose to have a picnic on the boats at Foxton Locks. Some of us walked up the locks for ice cream. A very relaxing day was had by all. We also passed another member of our group in her own narrowboat. We are going to Birmingham for a walk along the canals on August 21st. We meet at Rugby train station about 9.30am, by the cafe. If you are interested in joining us please let me know. We are still taking names for the meal at Stanwick Lakes on Friday 19th September at 7.0pm, closing date is Friday 22nd August.

Computer Group — I HAVE A SECRET.

Yes, I really do have a secret, but you’ll just have to wait and see what it is. If you joined the computer group in the early days and were confused, fear not. I have learnt a lot in the way I teach and present the class. We now work more slowly, work together, and you learn on your own Laptop as we go along. There is a break now until we restart in the Autumn with a new programme. Please send me your requests and suggestions for it. Country Matters — In July we enjoyed a walk

around Welford starting at the end of the canal arm, which has remains of lime kilns alongside it. We walked through the village. Passed a house with faded pub signs still visible, and also noticed 2 carved tree trunks one of Postman Pat and his black and white cat and the other with birds and animals. These had been painted this year and looked very good. Along the way we saw lots of butterflies both before and after the medieval fish pond and damsel flies by the River Avon, which forms the county boundary between Leicestershire and Northamptonshire. Returning along the canal towpath we paused to watch a boat go through the lock then continued walking seeing quite a few fish – later others enjoyed fish in batter in the Wharf Inn. There is no meeting in September as we are away. October’s meeting is usual time 10.30am 9

Discussion Group — Just a reminder that the group

will resume on Tuesday September 9th at The Parish Church Rooms at 2pm. For any new members remember that there is parking available outside the hall. The Topic for September is "Should Scotland become independent or stay within the Union?" and will be led by Rosemary. I am looking forward to welcoming the members that have shown an interest in joining the group through our closed season.

Heartbeat— The next Heartbeat meeting will be on

Golf — We still meet every Friday at Pytchley GC for

the 1st Tee time at 1.40 pm. We now have 8 regular players since 2 from Ise Valley U3A have joined us. As reported in the last news letter, 3 of us took part in a competition organized by Northampton U3A at Delapre GC Northampton which is an annual event in memory of one of their players who died 5 years ago. After the game we had a two course lunch followed by prize for the ladies/mens winners plus winners for the longest drive and nearest the pin completion. The weather couldn`t have been kinder and what better way to spend almost 5 hours playing incredible shots that even Tiger Woods would approve of !!! For further details then give me a call.

Knit and Natter - Another lovely friendly morning at

the knit and natter group, we welcomed Michelle back from her 2 month trip to America and caught up with everything that has happened in the last 2 weeks, with 9 of us it is quite a lot. I have contacted the neonatal section in the hospital and we are going to take some of the little bonnets and jackets we have made to them. We will be showing some of the items we have knitted at the October meeting. These may also be purchased on the day with the proceeds going to charity.

Lunch Club — Our lunch date in July was at The

Overstone Arms in Pytchley, we all agreed the food was really excellent and a good choice of venue. Our thanks go to Maggi McGuire and Sue Hart, who organised this month’s lunch. It does seem a little formal to be using surnames amongst friends but although we only have one Maggi as a member, we do have more than one Sue. Lunch Club is having a break now to enjoy this hot summer season so there will be no lunch date in August. We will, however, resume in September for the new season when Helen McAdams and Jean Hazard are organising lunch for us at The Lamb in Little Harrowden. That is Tuesday 23

rd September.

Looking at Churches — In July we went to Deene

Park. The church is supported by the Churches Conservation Trust & is only used once a year for the public for Harvest Evensong, although the Brudenell family from Deene Hall use it for family occasions. It is a large church with rather dark interior decoration, which was done in the 1800s. The Brudenell family pews were situated at the side of the church and curtained off so that the congregation could not see them at worship. Servants were kept separate in pews at the back of the church. Unfortunately, as the church is not well used: it was very dusty & the kneelers were threadbare, waiting for the London School of Needlework to do repairs. There were some magnificent tombs of the family, including the 7th Earl of Cardigan, who led the Charge of the Light Brigade. Our next church will be Lamport, Tomorrow, Wednesday 20th August at 2pm. We are able to park in Lamport Hall grounds & to use their teashop afterwards, if we can give numbers so that they are prepared.. There is also an exhibition for the summer on the history of the Isham family and surrounding villages, if anyone would like to visit. On Wednesday 17th September it will be Earls Barton. The charge will be £3 this time as we have to pay an extra £1 each for the guide. There is an interesting teashop opposite the church, and again we will need to give approximate numbers.

Musical Circles 2 — We had a good afternoon of

music. Unfortunately two members were unable to attend. The first choice was Copeland's nocturne for Clarinet and Piano then onto Chopin's Piano Sonatas 1and 2, followed by Beethoven's Violin Concerto and Puccini's Nessun Dorma, then onto offerings by Delius and Rodrigo also Mozart's Violin Sonata. Finally Sonata for Viola and Piano by the little known composer Bainton The next meeting will be the 27th August. Contact: Eileen Mason 01536 725925

Musical Circles 1 — The group enjoyed a few of my favourite things this afternoon. We began with 'questo o quella' (from Rigoletto) sung by the great tenor Mario Lanza followed by ' Softly Awakes my Heart' from Samson and Delilah by Saint Saens. The gifted violinist Itzhak Perlman played ' Les Ronde des Lutins' by Bazzini, a wonderfully exciting piece of music. Tchaikovsky provided the romance and wizardry with the dramatic finale to Swan Lake whilst Chopin's piano concerto had a more soporific effect. However, nobody nodded off when' Dies Irae' from Verdi's Requiem reverberated around the room. Two arias from Bizet's ' The Pearl Fishers' took us up to tea, cake and gossip time. We then listened to the third movement of Pagannini's Violin Concerto No.1 followed by the delightful overture to Mozart's opera Cosi Fan Tutte. The programme concluded with the fourth movement from The 'Organ Symphony' by Saint Saens, a real show stopper! These were just a few of my favourite things. Photography Group — There were no problems with

the weather for our July meeting. It was a hot sunny day for our visit to the villages of Sudborough and Lowick. However, you have to be careful when it comes to photography on days like this. With the sun high in the sky it means that bright objects are very bright, shadows are very dark, and the end result is a very high contrast picture which can look unpleasant. There are ways around this, such as waiting for the clouds to pass over the sun and diffuse its light. If you are taking pictures of flowers it helps to stand so that you cast a shadow over the flowers before you take the picture. This sounds a little strange, but modern digital cameras cope really well with this, producing a lower contrast picture. It is easier to add contrast to a picture later than to try to reduce it. Sudborough provided a typical Northamptonshire village scene of thatched cottages and lovely gardens, unfortunately spoiled by overhead power and telephone cables, TV aerials and parked cars. It did have plenty of Small Tortoiseshell butterflies, although in the heat of the day they were obviously very active and difficult to photograph. The church was visited briefly, and then we moved on to Lowick. Here we just concentrated on the church, and after some pictures of the famous lantern tower we went inside. The alabaster carvings proved very interesting from an historic and photographic point of view. Our next meeting is again a week later due to holidays, so we will meet at Lyddington at 2pm on Monday 11th August. In my last report I said that this group had room for two more members. I am pleased to say that it seems at least one of those places has been taken, but at the time of writing this we could still accommodate one more person if you are interested. Scrabble—Meetings are held at the Parish church

Spanish Conversation — The Spanish conversation

group continues to meet on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month from 2pm to 4pm. However, we have had a 3 week gap because of a 5 week month but back to normal on 13

th August when

we will have as a guest speaker Carmen Sutton who will spend the whole session talking in Spanish. We have now managed to acquire a training room free of charge so our sessions continue to be free. We use the book Pasos 2 which is for second level students We are now at full capacity. However, we would be happy to start a waiting list but because of the level our members are at, having completed two years of study, new students would need to have a reasonable knowledge of basic Spanish. Safe Driving —

One in ten crashes caused by distractions

The IAM is warning drivers about the dangers of distracted driving after research found that nearly one in ten (9%) of drivers admit to crashing their cars because they were distracted. Just under one in twenty drivers (4 per cent) say that someone was injured in the crash.

The IAM/Vision Critical survey, which polled nearly 1500 regular UK drivers aged 18 years and over, also found that of the 500 drivers who admitted to having a near miss, almost one in five (18 per cent) then went on to have a crash.

The most common distractions are:

- Children in the car (29%)

- Changing the radio channel (27%)

- Back seat drivers (26%)

- Mobile phone use (24%)

- Sat nav (15%)

- Attractive pedestrians, drivers or passengers (14%)

Our most crash-prone drivers come from London and the South East, where 14 per cent of drivers admitted to distraction crashes. The lowest crash rates are in Wales (3%), Yorkshire and Humber (4%) and South West England (5%),

Men are nearly twice as likely to crash because of a distraction than women (11% and 6%).

IAM chief executive Simon Best said: “If you think you can multitask and drive then think again. Car Tax Disc — From 1 October 2014, the paper tax

disc will no longer need to be displayed on a vehicle windscreen. There is a video available and more information from the DVLA at

Produce Stall— At the September meeting there will be produce stall. Members from the Looking at Churches group will be selling seeds, plants, jams and chutneys and possibly seasonal fruit. Please support the group on this new venture. If successful, we may continue with other groups.

Theatre Goers — National — Unfortunately due to

certain circumstances Mousetrap, at the Milton Keynes Theatre was cancelled. Originally I had booked 10 tickets which did not incur booking costs. As it was just five tickets were sold and that did incur a booking cost of £3.90 per person. A cost which was agreed to be exorbitant. There seemed no justification in paying the extra costs for not selling another 5 tickets. But for all those who were disappointed in not going I shall endeavour to book it again should it come to the area. Unfortunately I do not have any reviews to comment on this month regarding the local area but I would like to give you a brief insight into two shows my friend Jean and I went to see in London, The Jersey Boys and Miss Saigon. We travelled by coach and stayed overnight which enabled us to attend the two performances. The first was in the evening of our arrival, Jersey Boys. I remembered the music which really brought back memories of my teenage years, the mini skirt, beehive hair styles, mods and rockers ( I was in the latter group) and the sound of rock and roll. The show was excellent and it gave a very good insight into the life behind the scenes of Frankie Valli. It was not all roses. The second show was an matinee performance of Miss Saigon and I have to say of all the shows I have seen this has to be my favourite; I loved it. It was the story of love and romance, of war and controversy and of the innocent children left behind. It is a show which stirs up all the emotions; the portrayal of the story was superb; the visual effect were excellent. If you like a tearjerker then book a seat. Forth Coming Shows Woman In Black. Playreading — Reluctantly we have decided that now

is the time for our group to take its final bow. Difficulties have arisen with obtaining the plays from Northampton Central Library as on one or two occasions they have not arrived in time for the session despite being ordered a week in advance. As we were one of the very first groups to begin we have been able to enjoy eleven years of reading various plays followed each time by a lively discussion over tea and cake. In the main we have chosen comedy and melodrama because we wanted to keep it low key so that everyone could take part with no pressure and I think everyone would agree it has worked quite well. Over the years we have had lots of fun and firm friendships have been formed which I am sure will endure. Only three of us from the original group remain. Sadly several members passed away and were sorely missed. Gwyneth Holland has allowed us to use her lovely home as a venue from the beginning and was also the group leader for many years. Thank you to Gwyneth and to all who have been members of the group. We shall go out with a flourish by having a small party with tea and cakes sometime in August. Wining and Dining - We enjoyed a lovely evening at

Dexters in Oundle. The food and service were very good and the staff very friendly. We shall have been to The Royal Oak at Walgrave by the time of this newsletter when we will also have decided our next venue. Our next meal is on Wednesday September 10th at 7.0pm. Watercolour Painting— The Water Colour Painting

Class will resume on 11th September 2014 in the Parish Church Rooms (next to St. Peter & St. Paul Church, Kettering) on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of each month from 2.00 p.m. - 4.00 p.m. Parking is free, next to the Church Rooms or in the Church grounds. Walking Group - A total of 13 members took part in a

most enjoyable five and a half mile walk from the Angel Inn at Yarwell on Wednesday 6

th August. In spite of

dire weather forecasts, the sun shone throughout. The terrain was varied and included passing adjacent to some of the old ironstone and limestone quarried areas which are now SSSI’s and nature reserves. One particularly pleasant part was the walk through Old Sulehay Forest and if anyone knows correct pronunciation for Sulehay please advise. Lunch was taken al fresco at the Angel and was much enjoyed by all. The next walk will be on Wednesday 3rd September and will be 5 miles from the Montague Arms at Barnwell. Writers Group — Are you someone with an idea for a story, a poem, an article, an essay, even a play that you've been dying to get down on paper, but have never got round to it? Or have you something that you've already written and would like to share! Why not come along to our friendly group? All you need is a love of words and a sense of humour; you'll find lots of positive encouragement and advice as well as a cuppa. (There is a small levy towards the hire of the room.) We meet on the first Tuesday of each month from 2 pm to 4 pm in the Parish Rooms in Kettering. Next meeting September 2
