Are your internet searches what they seem to be?• I use google with adblock plus www.adblockplus.org and web of trust

https://www.mywot.com add ons

• Do not use a browser with bing search, I will demonstrate with a search for Norton Activation

• Beware of fake web sites, web of trust will flag them.

Keep you security software up to date

• Whichever product you use make sure it is up to date and has a valid subscription.

• I often see preinstalled trial versions of Mcafee and Norton running on computers that have expired trial licenses, this renders the software useless as it is not running properly or being updated.

• Only have one security product installed, if you have more than one they can slow the system down and cancel each other out.

• Ensure you have a firewall enabled

Keep your operating system up to date

• Windows updates can be a pain but they are there to fix vulnerabilities in the operating system.

• Keep updates set to automatic

• Do not use windows XP online, I still see it out there.

Be careful when downloading free software

• Free file viewers

• Video Converter Tools

• Music Converters

• Some software might be legitimate but it can come bundled with all sorts of unwanted rubbish or malware.

• Be careful when installing and check if there are tick boxes to not install unwanted extras.

• You can end up with fake software asking you to phone support to fix non existent problems.

Microsoft will never call you

• Anyone calling from Microsoft or pretending to be a Microsoft partner will just be trying to scam you.

• Other companies they pretend to be from are Talktalk, BT and Sky.

• You might get a call about there being a problem with your internet connection.

• Just hang up

Email

• Don’t open suspicious or unknown emails, email attachments, texts or pop up messages - for example an email with an unusually worded subject heading

• Some emails can be worded very well and you might be expecting a tax refund but HMRC will not email you a claim form, the same goes for banks they will never email you asking you to log in.

• Even if the email is from someone you know be careful, account can be compromised and attachments sent that look genuine, if in doubt email the sender back and ask if they sent it.

• It will start HTTPS://

• After making a payment log out of the site don’t just close the browser

• A good source of advice

• APP scam victims will be able to get reimbursed from September 2018

Should I ever let someone take control of my computer?• Only if you know 100% who they are, Teamviewer and Log Me In are

safe programs to use for this but can be abused if in the wrong hands. Would you let a stranger walk in off of the street into your house and give them access to your computer?

• Do not give control to cold callers, I have seen many systems compromised in this way. Money taken for lifetime support.

Change your passwords regularly

• Create passwords which are long, unique and use a mix of random numbers and lower and upper case letters (the longer the password the harder it is to guess - a 10 digit password is better than an 8 digit one)

• Don’t store any sensitive passwords in your browser, they are easily retrieved.

The fake system tools scam

• Computer infected with malware

• By installing some free software

• or you can’t view this video update your player here

• Suddenly a program will pop up discovering lots of issues with your computer and promising to fix them if you pay to buy their software.

• If you are unfortunate enough to fall for it you will find your credit card compromised.

• If you have a system tools program on your PC, google it with the word malware to check if it is legitimate, most are not.

Other scams I have encountered

• Email or message from a friend requesting money as they are stuck abroad. I’ve seen this due to an email address getting hacked. If you get this type of request just phone the person directly.

• Online shops that don’t really exist

• Online ticket retailers that do not have the tickets

• Use web of trust to check if a site is safe.

• Do background searches online if you are buying from a shop you have not used before.

Tips to stay safe• Caution is not a bad thing

• Make sure you download and install your software from the verified source, ie the authors website or authorised app store. If you are unsure then don’t download it.

• Make sure your payment card is protected.

• Delete Unsolicited Emails.

• Don’t Believe Promises of Money or Prizes

• Never Disclose Sensitive Personal Information

• Ignore emails stating “Please login here to update your account security or password.”

Rest Your Mouse Pointer Over A Link Before You Click• This will bring up the actual website that you are being directed to.

Surprise Surprise it isn’t your bank or paypal after all. It’s easy to copy a company logo so the email or web page looks genuine.

• The email sender may also show the correct email address for Barclays bank, it’s the website they are trying to get you to log into which is where the danger lies. If your click and log in then they will have captured your information.

Using wireless hotspots.

• These networks are open networks, if using a PC make sure you select PUBLIC network when asked what type of network are you connected to.

• Assume your device is open while connected.

• Check who manages the network you are connecting to. It’s easy to set up a Starbucks Free wifi network near a Starbucks café.

• If you need to do anything sensitive then use a VPN (Virtual Private Network). I use Nord https://nordvpn.com/special/deal/

• There are many others
