Our 10-year experience makes us feel proud of our achieve- ments, but also of the impressive efforts in the harsh and torturing transition of Albania. On the other side, all difficulties and challenges that we have faced have served as a lesson to understand that there is so much to do in a society where qualitative education is a critical and urgent need. Congratulations to POLIS and Co-PLAN! This was a work by well-known directors Piro and Eno Milkani. Piro Milkani says that the film has been shot very slowly, in a period of 3 years, paying attention to the most important monuments. “This prolonga- tion was very positive, because inside the documentary there is sketching, modeling in clay, pouring in plaster, in bronze and the inauguration, which takes 2 years.” The documentary shows the work of the sculptor, focusing especially on his monumental works. Piro says that the shoot- ing started “exactly when Thomai was working on the monument of “Albanian Mother”. The whole process is captured, until the inauguration in Macedonia. We followed Thomai in his daily life, interviews, meetings.” The film is a collaboration with BUNKER FILM and Public Television – the recent will be presenting it for the broader public. Together with its founding entity Co-PLAN, Institute for Habitat Development, introduced a reflection on the subject of design after design, based on their story in the Albanian context of the past 2 decades. The approach is based on the socio-economic and political situation of a country as a kind of radical cross-section of the Albanian society, where the challenge of design is always coupled with a critical and problematic of that context. Following a brief introduction on what is now Albania, the Albanian pavilion focuses on demystifying the challenges related to the consolidation of a democracy and a market economy through the POLIS and Co-PLAN work, addressed in four main columns. Each column represents a challenge of the Albanian context and its concrete answer as a project of physical and cultural change.
