- Amidst constant warfare in early twelfth century, helmets and armor masked knight’s identity to a fault

- Colorful designs with unique symbols used to instantly identify warrior on the battlefield

- VERY important to have emblems as few could read or write

- Over time, shield designs became point of family pride to their owners
