U FUKIERA – WINE LIST

Welcome to “U Fukiera”, the oldest winery and wine warehouse in Warsaw.

Fukier merchant family migrated to Poland from Nuremberg in the 16th century. From the very beginning, they were important members of the Warsaw’s bourgeoisie.

The very first Fukiers’ trading house was established as soon as in 1610. Two centuries later, in 1805, Florian Fukier opened a wine warehouse at the Old City Market, which slowly

transferred into a winery. His son, Teofil, took over the place and transferred it into the most important and famous winery in Warsaw. Starting from the 1837, “U Fukiera” became the

meeting place of nobles, prominent bourgeois, artists and politicians, described many times in well-known Polish novels and in the press.

The winery was most famous for its incredible collection of Hungarian wines,

but Teofil Fukier also imported great wines from all over the Europe, including Champagne, Bordeaux, Burgundy, Mosel, Spain and others. The jewel in the crown of Fukier’s cellar was the unique collection of Tokaj wines established by Teofil’s father, Florian. There are several

sources claiming that the oldest bottles could date as early as the end of the 16th century. For sure, Teofil Fukier bought a significant number of bottles from vintages between 1624

and 1794. The collection was called “Hetman’s”, as some of the wines came from the cellar of the hetman Potocki Family.

The collection became one of the city’s main attractions,

almost as important as the King’s Castle or Saint John’s Cathedral. Unfortunately, in September 1939, in the first days of the World War II,

all the bottles were confiscated by the Nazis. The house of Fukier’s winery was bombed in September 1939 and completely destroyed

during the Warsaw Uprising in 1944. Along with the whole complex of the Old Town, the house was one of the first to be reconstructed after the war. At the beginning of 1990’s

“U Fukiera” has reopened in its present shape. In 2016, we hosted a very particular dinner of Confrérie de Tokaj, during which the best wine

producers of Hungary dined together with the Polish members and guests of the association. The meeting created a symbolic link to the glorious history of the restaurant and wine cellar.

including some of the very best bottles in the world, famous labels and hidden treasures for real wine lovers.

Before the Second World War Fukier’s cellar hosted literally all the vintages of Tokaj ever produced. This collection was famous all over the world. We try to show in our wine list all significant
