WHO WE ARE:
WHERE WE WORK
Walukuba Masese Communities in Jinja Uganda. 4 villages, population: 30,000 people.
.
Just 10 minutes from Jinja city center heading East is Walukuba-Masese part of JMC with some of its part on the Showers of Lake Victoria. The area used to be one of the biggest industrial areas in Uganda back in the early 1970’s before the expulsion of the Indians. On your way through the community, you cannot miss the scenery of the remains of shacks that used to be the very functional industries with a few that are still operational. There are also new factories are being built others already functional employing about 2,000 people living in the surrounding communities.
The settlement is mainly residential and has some of the biggest slums in Jinja characterized by a high population growth with high levels of poverty, lack of adequate health facilities, lack of adequate shelter and sanitation facilities. Most of the land is owned by JMC although some residents have been living on this land for more than 12 years and so claim ownership but have no supporting documents. The information gathered revealed that there is approximately 30,000 living in this area and with about 40% of the households headed by women. The ratio of adults to children is estimated at 1:4 meaning that children and youth are the biggest population in this community.
When it comes to education, there are five main public primary schools and 3 public secondary schools with an overwhelming number of students especially at primary school level estimated at 1: 120 (Teacher: Student). The situation clearly doesn’t offer the best environment for effective learning especially with less involvement in co-curricular activities. There are few private schools available but just a handful of the local population can afford it.
Who we are:
A youth led non-profit NGO using sport and play to educate and empower children and youth in disadvantaged communities of Walukuba-Masese Jinja Uganda. From one sport to multiple sport (Football, netball, volleyball, rugby), developed an education, health and youth mentorship programs.
Vision: “We envisage a world where all young
people are healthy, educated and protected”
“Young people are the most powerful force in the world. If young people with the same vision, passion and ambition come together, they can overcome anything.”
HOW WE WORK
Main Objective: To use sport, play and life planning skills to create conditions in which children and youth can develop their full potential and also look forward to a full and satisfying life

2. Increased children and youth knowledge about life changes, challenges, SRHR through life skills interventions.
3. Increased access to school attendance of disadvantaged children and youth
Interventions:
1. Sports: Basketball, netball, football, rugby and volleyball.

Accomplished and targets hit. 2 enthusiastic
coaches taking lead of the program schools, community *Children* and have now developed a basketball youth program for young people above 15 years. With about 3 study scholarships already secured, the goal for 2018 has already been set to 50 study scholarships.

coaches from playing and coaching in competitive leagues in Uganda and Kenya. (JK Dolphins, All. One Basketball School/AVV, Uganda Christian University/UCU Canons)
NETBALL
Netball festival Hosted 48 participants from NDT Kenya 183 participants.250 Netball sessions>>85 participants>>5 friendly games away from home>>7 Coaches>>1 TOT workshop
Through a continued partnership with NDT, X-
SUBA netball programs continue to strive with an increasing number of participants mostly girls. Incorporated with SRH education there is more than just netball going on. There is learning, sharing, playing, building confidence that has helped to cover the gender gap in sport.
44% Girls EQUAL GENDER PARTICIPATION IN SPORT
From the pie chart above, 2014 reflects the time before we implemented netball in our programs. Only 6% of the young people we reached out were girls (Both school and community and school programs).
2015- The percentage rose to 17%. To
meet the need to involve more girls into sport, X-SUBA run a campaign which was titled “I am a Kicker” a project that was advocating for inclusive sport using football. With the theme:
“Join football and gain confidence beyond the field”, the one year long campaign involved 60 girls who have never played football to play, learn life skills, play tournaments and these girls have found confidence to join other sports as well; basketball, rugby, netball.
Challenge for our junior team: Our Junior teams
took on 3 high school teams in friendly matches (St. Noah Mawagaali Sec. School team, Jinja Senior Sec. Sch. and St. Peters High school). Way forward is to create opportunities for study scholarships in these schools when they finish their primary school. With already about 35 of player performing very skillfully in the play, we have set our target to have 21 one of these player’s study scholarships secured by end of 2018.

LIFE SKILLS
Since our overall goal and objective is to create conditions in which children and youth can develop their full potential and look forward to a full and satisfying adult life, life skills education is one of our main strategies we use to achieve this. Our life skills sessions run in our partner schools on a weekly, X-SUBA’s weekend programs and holiday program.
We have held 60 life skills sessions both during
play sessions in schools and connection days. Exactly 48 Connection days which are our Saturday play sessions, we focus a lot on life skills. This year we have focused on subjects; setting goals, communication and self esteem/building confidence. We have reached out to more than 200 children weekly in our play and life skills
sessions.
ICT
This is a new project that has started with the
coaches. We run a pilot in 2015 and realized the essential of ICT in our programs comparatively the successes it could bring to realization of individual goals in today’s globalised world.
With 7 computers at our office, coaches are
learning more about reporting through systems and data base management. This is huge progress to us as have most of our data now in soft and hard copy on drives. We have also created a mailing system for all our projects and activities which keeps all project managers and partners updated on progress of all of X-SUBA projects. This will also enhance our effective use and accountability of resources and finances at our organization.
Through partners, we have a plan for ICT for community starting 2018. We are excited to empower our communities we serve with an ICT venture that we reach out to more than 50 young people monthly.

The main goal for our activities on Sexual reproductive health is to
provide and increase availability and accessibility for appropriate and acceptable quality information on sexual reproductive health rights and services to young people so that they can make informed decisions now and in their adult life.
This year, we finalized our SRHR activities with EMCO grants

We engaged open discussion around teenage pregnancy which
involved about 220 teenage girls and 30 teenage boys, 3 partners (AIC, CHAIN AFRICA, NDT and YLA). We discussed causes, effects and what could be solutions
“My Body, My life, My ways”
The 2nd event was an intergenerational dialogue that involved; teenagers, parents,
community leaders, community health works and SRHR experts from AIC, CHAIN Africa
and X-SUBA. With the activity theme “Life in my shoes” an open dialogue
that involved questioning and consultation from one another around issues concerned with Adolescent health education and general SRH and Rights. 2. CLOTHES4HEALTH PROJECT
2 Events in 1 year
Through this project over years, we commit to support communities by donating clothes to children disadvantaged families staying in Masese 3, Masese 1 and Soweto
slums found in Walukuba-Masese division.
About 500 families supported and over 1500 children already that we have donated clothes too since 2013; we are running a self sustainability approach where we have
started sensitization sessions about the need for clothing their children and encouraging parents to consider clothing as a basic need and always include it on their home budget. We continue to collect children clothes both new and old from well wishers and donate these clothes to children in families in extreme poverty/need. Last year we partnered with Light up Uganda and held an event in Soweto and clothed over 200 children in one day event. We are running the “Clothe A 1000 campaign” and you can also get involved by donating or organizing collection points. Be our clothes 4 Health ambassador in your community today!

Young people take lead project:
