Production

• Tyrannosaur (2011) is a social realist piece made by Warp Films. It is set in England and focuses on modern issues, such as violence and abuse among modern day households.

• It stars Olivia Coleman and Peter Mullan as a couple that has developed in good ways and many bad ways since they met in a charity shop.

• It was directed by Paddy Considine who is also an actor.

The Cast• Olivia Coleman is a

fairly famous English actress who has been in many big British films such as Hot Fuzz (2007) and The Iron Lady (2011).

• Peter Mullan is an English Actor who also directs. He is famous for his roles in Trainspotting (1996) and Riff Raff (1991).

Technology Used

• As this film is heavily within the category of social realism, not many special effects or fancy technology was used to make the film.

• They used the Canon EOS 5D Mark II and the Red One MX cameras with Cooke Panchro Lenses.

• This camera is not one that is used in big Hollywood films, and is perfect for this size of production company and film.

Location and Budget• This film was film in one

place only: Leeds in the United Kingdom. They used a small town instead of a set and kept everything very basic and as it was to create everything realistically.

• The budget was only £750,000 which is a minimal amount comapared to Hollywood films.

• This film is not part of a franchise.

Distribution

• As Warp Films are a fairly small production company, they needed many more companies to distribute their product all over the world.

• In the UK, the distribution company was Optimum Releasing and in the US, it was Strand Releasing.

• This film was a fairly small project and therefore was not marketed in any huge way. Warp Films were expecting DVD sales to be bigger than the opening weekend.

• Warp has it’s own website on which you can watch Tyrannosaur so therefore is still being marketed three years after its release.

Distribution• Tyrannosaur was released in

two formats across the UK in cinemas: Digital Intermediate was its master format and Redcode Raw was its source format.

• The film is still available on DVD and Bluray, as well as downloading it online for a small price.

• There are many special features on the DVD including:

Downloads and Festivals

• The film is available to illegally download on many websites such as Putlocker and Sockshare.

• The film won many awards at the Sundance festival, and even won a BAFTA for Outstanding Debut for a BritishWriter, Producer or Director.

Exhibition• The film was released

in 25 countries which is a massive number considering Warp is an independent film company.

• £243,252 was the gross in just the UK for this film, almost a third of the budget. The overall gross was £405,454. However, the film is still making money to this day.

Exhibition

• The opening weekend box office takings are unknown in the UK but Warp Films sell all their films on the basis of making good DVD films. In the USA it was around $7,000 but this again was only shown in five screens.

• The fact the film only showed in a maximum of five screens across America suggests that Warp is an independent company.
