Typography II

COURSE DESCRIPTIONTypography is the art or skill of designing communication by means of the printed word. This class explores key typographic styles, encourages you to develop an understanding of typographic conventions, and instills a sensitivity to the subtleties typography demands. You will work on assignments with rigorous parameters and featuring larger bodies of text as well as assignments that encourage you to think conceptually and experimentally. We will look at typog-raphy as a compositional and communications tool, focusing first on single page layout and progressing through multiple page projects. You will address grid construction; hierarchies;organizations based on visual, syntatical and semantic explorations; you will learn how to create meaningful sequence, narrative and books structures.

“You will choose from the provided text and create layouts-first by hand in class and then on the computer- using specific compositional strategies taken from Kiber-ly Elam’s book, Typographic Systems. You should feel free to reorder the lines of text to support the hierarchies you choose, but you mau not delete any text. This assign-ment is about exploring hierarchy, differ-ent compositional strategies, typographyic basics, typographic detail and balance.

2Parameters:- Black and White photocopies and/or laser, trimmed to 10” x 10”- Lines, bars, and rules only. No superfluous design elements-One typeface family only. -Follow attached matrix as a guideline for your digital compositions.-InDesign must be used for your final layouts.

3..............................

3This was a mini project, we had to work in teams to create “large scale expres-sive typography utilizing readily available materials”. I was in a group of three class-mates, the letter that we recieved was “T”, and the word that we choose was “Torture”. We used red duck tape to spell out the word on the stairs at Otis.

4“Select one mental or physical condition/state as a subject matter to create a 12-page minimum booklet. The complete booklet will consist of at least”:

1. Cover and back cover (two pages)2.Table of contents (one page)3. Title page4. Text spreads (at least eight pages)5.Bibliography- referencees list of sources used

The mental condition that I choose was:Hoarding

Parameters:

-The content will be self-authored and/ or developed from collected research. At least five source texts must be authored/collected and presented, from which you will select at least three for use in your booklet.

-No images or ullustrations can be used. Text pages must include page numbers and may also unclude title headers. Rule lines may be used as long as they enhance the typography and concept. Black and white only, no color, no grey.

-You will create a custom dimension for your booklet. However, spreads must print on tabliod paper. Make your own size.

Considerations:1. A book is a system that allows several types of information to appear together in harmony to create an unique experience.

2. How will your design influence the understanding of the subject matter? Think about how someone will read your text.

3. All design moves must have an idea that reinforces your overall concept. Al-ways be able to answer why.

Diagram Workshop

“The purpose of the diagram is to help you organize booklet content in a meaningful and concise manner taking into account concep-tual strategies, initial hierarchy, and levels of information. You will create two to three diagrams during class in addition to initial conceptual strategies.

1. From your research, choose at least 3 different texts then identify two to three levels of hierarchy2. Next, assign a color to each level of hierarchy3. With selected colors and using lines, dots, solid blocks of color diagram how content will play out throughout booklet 4. Remember that text can start and stop at any point in the booklet5. Develop one complete booklet diagram, begin thinking about conceptual strategies for your booklet6.After developing one complete booklet diagram, begin thinking about conceptual strategies for your booklet7. Develop 1 concept in class. It does not have to be completely figurd out, but you should hae a “Bid Idea” and a notion of how levels of information behave accordingly to this idea8. Now a diagram a second booklet applying this preliminary concept9. Remember, minimum of 12 pages but feel free to have more
