3 main categories of typefaces
1. Typefaces are designed to convey specific meanings or messages
2. Use only 3 different types of letters in a visual
3. Generally, typefaces can be grouped into 3 main categories :-

SERIFS
1. Typefaces with “ feet ”. 2. Examples : Times New Roman,
C larendon3. Serif typefaces are used for typing
texts in notes, test papers, newspapers or books

Serifs are letters for printing textbooks, notes, test papers, brochures, leaflets, pamphlets, magazines, newspapers

SANS SERIF
1. Typefaces without serifs 2.Facilitate reading and comprehension
as they are easy to read and print 3. Many variations – Bold, Medium, light,
italics. 4. Examples : Arial, Helvetica, Avant Garde 5. Used in visuals which need to be projected
( slides, videos, transparencies, LCD & Computers or filmstrips )

Sans Serifs are for all projected media ( LCD & Computer, OHP, Slides, Film Strips, Videos, CD - ROMS ), Sign Boards, Posters, Advertising media

1. Flowery typefaces for special occasions
2. Not to be used for large areas of text to be read or in visuals which need to be projected
