Portrait photography isn't easy - just pointing a camera at

someone isn't generally going to get you a great photo.

What can you do to increase the number of quality photos

you take?

Page 6: Types of Photography and Famous Photographers Digital Photography Mr. Clark.

CompositionCrop In CloseHave a scan through any newspaper or magazine and you’ll soon see how tight portraits are usually cropped in the professional media. By cropping close and not having blank space all around the subjects head, the readers eyes have less space within the photo to escape to.

Depth of Field•Use a narrow depth of field•This means using your portrait setting or a large aperture in manual settings•This will blur the background and put the focus straight on the subject

Tell a Story•An effective portrait will show emotion•The background may have clues to what the persons occupation is •A smile isn’t necessary•A portrait may be more than just a face, but the main subject is ALWAYS one person.

What About Light•Don’t forget to think about your lighting and how that effects the mood of the picture

Food Photography

• Food photography is a still life specialization of commercial photography.

• Aimed at producing attractive photographs of food. • Use in advertisements, packaging, menus or

Black and White Photography

• “Color photography is like a good novel that spells everything out in detail, whereas black and white photography is like poetry – it’s strength isn’t in what’s said; it’s what’s left out.” – South African Photographer, Heinrich van den Berg

• Why Black and White?• It’s classy – it represents colors in shades of gray, no need

for extra effects, for that vintage feel.• Emotion – when you shoot portraits in black and white,

attention is focused on the eyes and face, capturing and accentuating the emotion and details in the face.

Page 129: Types of Photography and Famous Photographers Digital Photography Mr. Clark.

Perspective Photography

• This type of photography offers a distorted perception of reality by manipulation of objects in the depth of field.
