In any given classroom, there are at least four different types of learners

Visual Learners

Auditory Learners

Read-Write Learners

Kinesthetic Learners

Like to see words written down

Prefer to see a picture with something being described

Enjoy a time line to remember historical events

Like to see pictures printed with content

Enjoy creative writing & art activities

Characteristics of Visual Learners

Like charts, maps, graphs, etc.

Enjoy multimedia presentations

Prefer small group discussion

Study materials by reviewing notes

Organize thoughts in outline form

Characteristics of Visual Learners

Remember what they hear

Like to talk through concepts

Good l isteners

Remember by talking out loud and through verbal repetit ion

Verbally express themselves while learning (“Oh, I get it!”)

Characteristics of Auditory Learners

Like classroom discussions

Remember verbal instructions without writing them down

Like interesting lectures

Hard to work quietly for long periods of time

Enjoy listening to stories

Characteristics of Auditory Learners

Enjoy acting out a situation through drama

Volunteer to be in role plays

Like making something

Like to physically handle learning materials

Remember and understand by doing

Characteristics of Kinesthetic (hands-on) learners

Take notes to keep busy, then throw them away

Can’t sit still for long periods of time

Like crossword or other types of puzzles

Like using computers

Animate…often talk with their hands

Variety is the spice of life, and it’s time for teachers to spice up things in the classroom.  Make an intentional effort to

appeal to all three types of learners….they’ll love you for it.
