Types of Chemical Reactions
How can the five major types of reactions be classified?
Synthesis or Combination• Synthesis/Combination = falling in love • When you fall in love, 2 separate people come
together and form a couple• 2 different elements joining together to make a
compound
Synthesis
2 Mg + O2 2 MgO 2 Na + Cl2 2 NaCl
Decomposition• Decomposition = breaking up• A couple breaks up and become single again
Decomposition
2 KClO3 2 KCl + 3 O2
Single Replacement or Displacement• Single Displacement = the
player• The player already has a
girlfriend, but sees a prettier girl and decides to dump his girlfriend for the prettier girl OR cutting in to dance with someone else
• Reactivity series (higher replaces lower) p. 333 and pg. 7 Reference Table
Single Replacement
2 Li + MgI2 2 LiI + Mg
O2 + 4 NaCl 2 Na2O + 2 Cl2
Double Displacement• Double Displacement = switch • 2 couples switch partners at a dance
Double Replacement
2 AgNO3 + H2 S Ag2 S + 2 HNO3
Combustion• Always involves oxygen• hydrocarbon + oxygen = carbon dioxide + water
Combustion
