Types of camera lenses and shotsBy Jacob Lawrence
Fish eye lens• The fish eye lens is slightly
unconventional in the way its picture is displayed as it forms a contorted image towards the edges of the picture.
• Its useful in creating an abstract image that seems somewhat edge due to its obscure nature.
• The range of the lens gets a field of view up 180 degrees.
Short telephoto lens• Short telephoto lenses are
used to isolate key features in landscapes and portraits they are very useful in close up work.
• They are effective at getting mass amounts of detail in an image at once.
• They usually have a standard field of view
Long telephoto lens• Similar to the short in the
fact that it is good at getting large amounts of detail but it is more specific in the things it is picturing.
• Lenses like these are very useful in picturing wildlife and sports as it is good at making large amounts of distances between the photographer and subject to be less noticeable because of its narrow FOV.
Extreme long shots• Extreme long shorts are
usually images which include the whole of the subject and a large proportion of its surroundings.
• Pictures like these depending on the composition and mood of the surroundings are great for creating either a sense of loneliness or adventure.
Long shot• Similar to the extreme long
shot however the subject is the main focus of the image and takes up the majority of the image.
• Shots like these tend to contain the whole subject.
• They are great for things such as fashion photography
Medium shots • Medium shots tend to
contain the majority of the subject for example in a person waist up
• Shots like these are also great for fashion photography but especially use in things like glamour magazines as it contains the whole upper body of the subject.
Medium close ups • Medium close ups tend to
contain the chest up of a person and about a 1/3 of the subject.
• In use they are very similar to the medium shot.
Close up• This tends to include the
shoulders and head of a subject or about 20% of an object.
• This is useful in showing detail within the subject and focusing on expression to set the theme of an image oppose to mis en scen which is much easier in wider shots.
Extreme close up• Extreme close ups usually
contain about 15% of a subject in a person their face and often eyes.
• These types of images are great at picking up mass detail and conveying emotion in a subject.
