Types of boundaries, what this all means.

Geography Lesson 3

What is the reason for the larger plates that make up the crust of the earth move?

What are the layers of the earth? What could you compare our earth to? What

about what causes plate movement?

Review of Previous Learning

Some of you may be wondering, what happens when two of these HUGE and MASSIVE plates meet?

They create different types of boundaries between them based on the direction and force of the plate contact.

List 3 Key points that you have learned from the video. And list them in your notebook.

Where would you expect the most earth quakes and volcanoes to happen?

Make your predictions now!

Key Question

This figure shows the “baseball-stitching” pattern of earthquakes around the globe. This represents only a small percentage of the earthquakes that would typically occur in a year. Over a million earthquakes of Magnitude 2 and lower occur every year. And 1,500 Magnitude 5 occur every year.

There are thousands of small earthquakes every day “Strong” earthquakes (~M7) occur once a month. >M8 occur about once/year.

Notice that the earthquakes coincide with plate boundaries, and the deepest quakes (blue) are in subduction zones.

Where would you

expect to see

Volcanoes then?

This image shows a smattering of the most prominent and active volcanoes that occur above sea level. There are thousands of submarine volcanoes not shown here.

If you are petrified of Earthquakes and Volcanoes where on earth should you live to never experience one? Why?

Key Question to Consider

You will be assigned one of the following Boundaries. It will be your job to design a drawing with labels to demonstrate what it would look like. A4 Sheet please.

You will need to save room for a small write up about what is happening in your diagram. Example the boundary plate create a trench causing volcanic activity. This can happen under water and lead to the formation of Islands.
