Nehemiah Skandara and Val Sell win the short race
Eighty-six hardy runners completed either the 5 Mile or 2 Mile course on a blustery day at
Salmon Creek Beach August 4th.
There was a Skandara sweep of the first 3 places in the 2 Mile with Nehemiah leading older brothers Job and Abraham to win. Val Sell broke up a potential female Skandara sweep in the 2 mile leading Sarah, Danneca and Rebekah for the win. Tyler Harwood was only seconds ahead of Elijah Stephanson for a hard fought win in the 5 Mile. Kate Papadopoulos dominated all women in the 5 Mile.
The Empire Open hosted teams from
across the USATF PA on August 24th.

Occasionally when I gather with friends for a running workout or race, one or more of them will issue a complaint, sometimes mild, sometimes dramatically desperate, about the conditions they are forced to endure in order to maintain their fitness here in Northern California.
“It’s sooooo cold,” is a common refrain on a 44-‐degree morning that will soon turn into a 65-‐degree afternoon. “God, it’s hot,” I hear when we are starting a summer workout late in the day at 91 degrees with no detectable humidity.
“That trail is too rocky.”
“This park is overrun with bikes. There were, like, 10 of them up there today.”
“Didn’t we just run this same route last month? I get so tired of running the same trails.”
“I don’t want to get muddy. I’m staying on pavement today.”
“Too hilly for me!”
By now my companions must know that I rarely let these protestations slip by without notice. I spent the first 24 years of my life in rural northeastern Indiana. The latter half of that period I called myself a distance runner.
On that 44-‐degree, January morning: “Where I’m from, people are running in cotton sweats over thermal tights, wearing two pairs of socks and underwear, mittens and a neoprene face
mask, worrying about their eyeballs freezing solid.”
I awoke one Sunday in February to a crystal clear morning and a 15-‐mile run on my training calendar. Before dressing, I called the automated service to get the temperature outside. Minus five. And as the weathermen (they were all men in those days) liked to say, “But the wind makes it feel like it’s 30 below!”
I started out against that wind, as all runners from cold climes learn to do. The alternative, running with the wind at the start on such a day, can sometimes end badly, where the brave explorer experiences anything from extreme discomfort to death by deep-‐freeze. You see, you can still sweat at minus five degrees, and when running with a tailwind you will soon feel way overdressed.
Until you turn around. Oh, if wind-‐chill only worked that well on a sweltering summer day! I finished my 15-‐miler in comfort. The temperature had risen to zero.
And if you say “dry heat” in Indiana, locals will think that you’re talking about dog breeding. Or
President’s Message
I Feel Your Pain (and man, is it pathetic!)
The Empire Runners Club | www.empirerunners.org | [email protected]
assume that you mean “dry heaves,” which is quite common in summer the day after gallons of beer are consumed in a futile effort to achieve some degree of relief from the oppressive sauna that settles like a heavy, hot, wet blanket over much of the Eastern U.S.
There’s nothing like racing in those conditions. In my case, it was always the quadriceps muscles that started tingling, a warning of imminent doom that could only be avoided by quitting the race and rushing for an air-‐conditioned structure. I never quit, but maybe that’s not something to brag about.
Too rocky: “Oh yeah, I’d rather be running on sidewalks or maybe 10 miles on a canted road edge.”
Bikes? In Indiana, the only reason that dog stopped chasing you is because the dog at the next farm is bigger and meaner.
I was on a winter run there, in mild weather – about 20 degrees –wearing socks on my hands because they kept my fingers warmer than gloves do. My habit then was to offer my hand to any charging dog while in full stride, convinced that they just wanted to get a sniff of me before they retreated back to the porch, full of pride that they chased off another infidel.
On my left I saw a Saint Bernard, weighing considerably more than I, charging with teeth
bared menacingly and a spine-‐tingling growl rumbling up from the depths of his evil soul. “They can smell fear,” it is said, “so don’t be afraid.” So it is said. Unfortunately fear travels even faster than the speed of smell and although outwardly I remained calm, reaching out a hand in peace, adrenaline was already seeping through my pores.
Cujo, as I now affectionately refer to him, did not hesitate. For him the offering was not there to quench his curiosity. It was there for immediate consumption. I realized my mistake in an instant but it was too late. Cujo already had a sockfull of hand and it was the sock that saved the rest of me that day.
I snapped my hand back and the sock slid off into Cujo’s mouth. He stopped chasing and took his anger out on the helpless tube of cotton, ripping it to shreds in an ecstasy of vicious rage. I got away with a couple of fang streaks running across the back of my hand.
When I return to Indiana I still get the canine welcome on the run. But now, in return, I offer my foot, and not in a peaceful way.
The Empire Runners Club | www.empirerunners.org | [email protected]
“This trail, again??” During my Hoosier years, once every couple of months I would drive 30 miles to a state park that featured about 4 miles of trails that were not really made for running. What a treat! And while farm country is not unpleasant to look at, I have seen enough soybean fields to satisfy that category of scenery for a lifetime. So now I happily plod around Lake Ilsanjo almost every Sunday and never tire of its soul-‐stirring reflections.
Hills: Looking at the Indiana map in an Atlas, some might consider me lucky to have lived a short distance from the highest elevation in the state. Until they find out that it is a mesa of buried garbage rising out of a huge sanitary landfill. In less than a thousand years, that mountain will be tall enough to support year-‐round snows.
I can only surmise that the local Native Americans were just as disgusted with the area’s monotonous flatness. About 2000 years ago they started a campaign of building mounds, perhaps to attract other tribes for a little cross country competition. There are other theories, of course, but none seem to make as much sense.
Indiana is a runners’ paradise, however, when compared to the conditions I faced on a recent business trip to Bangkok, Thailand. Except for frigid temperatures, they’ve got it all. Year-‐round heat and humidity that would make a
Mississippi native get right back on the plane. Flatness that threatens flooding over half the country with every high tide. Traffic jams so gridlocked that you can taste the air pollution on your tongue. Sidewalks are filthy and far too narrow and cluttered for the pedestrian traffic, which seems to flow heavily and non-‐stop, both day and night.
Instead of bikes there are tuk-‐tuks (motorcycle taxis) and street vendors galore and homeless beggars lying in the middle of the sidewalk. The multitude of mangy dogs are quite docile but, when running on the 2500-‐meter paved loop in the only public park in a city of 12 million, you will without a doubt get a shock to your nervous system when you have to suddenly veer out of the way of a giant monitor lizard, some at least 8 feet in length.
So the next time you have a problem with the running conditions of Sonoma County, don’t be surprised if I fail to sympathize.

First, the needs . . .
The Empire Runners Club is an all-volunteer association and we are lucky to have had many dedicated members providing great service to the club over the years. We will soon be setting our 2014 race calendar and would like to maintain our entire list of events. In order for that to happen, there are two races that will need new race directors.
Ilsanjo Classic 10-Mile, Neo-Classic 4-Mile and 1K Newt Scoot, March, Howarth Park: This past spring I filled the gap as an interim director, although our Events Coordinator, Jerry Lyman, did most of the actual work. I will not be able to do that in 2014.
Phil Widener Empire Open PA Cross Country, August, Spring Lake Park: It was Jerry Lyman who stepped in late to save this event last month. Jerry has about a thousand other club duties so we need someone else to handle this one next summer.
Newsletter Editor: For the past few years this assignment has been shared by Dale Peterson and Nate Koch, each publishing an edition every other month. We need a third person (even a fourth!) that has basic skills in putting together the monthly submissions into the template you see here. Three editors means the duties for each are reduced to four issues per year. Four editors cuts that to three issues for each. Editors are often those who have creative writing skills and enjoy contributing running-related articles.
Board Members: The club is administered by a board of seven members who meet monthly to

consider proposals involving club finances and operations. Four of these positions are up for election by the end of this year. Elected members serve two-year terms and, if willing, can be re-elected an unlimited number of times.
Join us in helping to keep this club strong! If you have an interest in filling any of the needs described here, please send an e-mail to me at [email protected].

Now, the notes . . .
This summer we had new event directors take over the Riverfront Relay and the Summer Track Series. Both events continue to be well managed and very popular among our membership.
Heather Rosales and her volunteer crew from the El Molino High School cross country program made her race director debut at the Riverfront Relay in June. The event was a sellout, the post-race breakfast was exceptional and generous club members donated a good sum of money to the El Molino team.
The Summer Track Series benefitted from a quartet of track and field lovers when Paul Berg and Brad Zanetti each took on the title of co-meet director and local high school coaches Paul Troppy and Brian Bradley convinced the club to add field events to the agenda. Although the five-meet series was shortened to four by a freak June weather system, participation appeared to be at an all-time high.
Paul Berg helped keep the Summer Track Series on our schedule for its 28th year
Paul Berg also administers our club’s Student Grant Fund that awards college-expense money to local high school seniors who plan to continue competing in track and field and/or cross country. I recently received this note from Healdsburg High School 800-meter star (2:14.17) Maria Barragan:

And finally, the news . . .
Remember this face from the 2003 Kenwood Footrace?
17-year-old Kim Conley was about to win her 3rd-straight 3K title in her usual patriotic form. She ran and won the event for another 5 straight years.
Here we are 10 years later and Kim recently represented that flag on the world’s biggest track & field stage – the World Championships in Moscow, Russia. Proving that her 2012 London Olympics appearance was no flash-in-the-pan, Kim has since competed for the U.S. in the World Cross Country Championships in Poland in March and was a finalist in the 5000 meters at Moscow last month.
Her thoughts now turn to another big stage as (rumor has it) she is contemplating a plan to debut at the 2014 New York City Marathon.

Spotlight on Brendan Hutchinson (1985)
By Chris Gray
[Editors Note: In Honor of “The Hutch” turning 70, this article from 1985 when he was but 42 years old is being reprinted here for your enjoyment]
Just try to imagine Brendan Hutchinson growing up in the concrete jungles of New Jersey. It’s a decidedly incongruous image. He is far more appropriately framed against the backdrop of Annadel State Park, a naturalists’ jungle. He seems to belong there just as much as the other wildlife which roam along those 5,000 protected acres.

Spotlight on the Hutch - Continued
Interviewing Brendan proved be an unexpected growth experience. There, so secure in my 20th century, gadget-filled kitchen, I found myself reacting in wonderment to a man who has elected to work only enough to enable himself to buy film for his camera and to have enough money to cover the entry fees of the races he wishes to enter. And when he isn’t working, you will almost certainly find him, often as much as 50 or 60 hours a week, hiking about Annadel. He trails the herds of deer and other animals that live there. He knows anywhere from 30 to 50 deer, has chosen special names for them, and they all recognize and tolerate his presence much as they would a shepherd who has won their trust. Armed only with his camera, he has captured still-life images of Annadel that most of us have never had the chance to see. A litter of newborn wild piglets suckling next to their mother’s outstretched body. A deer, caught in the sunlight as he leaps to feast from the top branches of a tree. As he explained to me, once I know about his running, and his photography, I knew all there was to know of importance in his life. But Brendan’s laid-back ways might cause you to miss a dedicated kind of passion which simmers just out of view.
When you happen to mention Annadel,
his emotions seem to come up to you in full boil, and he is able to make tales of life in the hills come alive and they become so vivid that it becomes easy to picture the scenes he so skillfully uses verbal images to paint.
So it became necessary for me to begin dealing with the dichotomy of Brendan in Annadel, and young Brendan on the sidewalks in New Jersey. It is hard to picture him playing ball with his older brother or even good-naturedly teasing his younger sister. Frankly, it was easier to imagine him doing the one activity as a youngster which seems much more “Brendan-like”; turning rocks over to see what lurked underneath. When he was about four years old, a salamander scurried out when Brendan lifted up his rocky home, and it proved
to be one of those hands-on experiences that remained etched in Brendan’s memory.
During his childhood a love of sports, for a time, may have surpassed his curiosity about the natural world. He was into Little League, basketball and football. Later, he did pursue his studies in college, earning his B.S. degree in biology, and then his M.A. in Fish and Wildlife Management. At first Brendan had toyed with the idea of becoming a pre-med student, but after years of lab-bound biology, Brendan realized his real interest was in wildlife and “outdoor” biology. In effect, he noticed that he far preferred fresh air to formaldehyde!
After earning his master’s degree, Brendan completed all the courses he needed for his doctorate, also collecting a large amount of data needed for his dissertation. But he was side-tracked when he agreed to join a citizen’ group formed to protest the building of a nuclear power-plant. Brendan joined the movement as a consultant, and was paid until their funding ran out. But he decided to stay for two more years on a volunteer basis.
Brendan came to Sonoma County in
1981, after his job was finished, to visit his parents. Santa Rosa proved to be a magnet, drawing Brendan to its beauty. It was a momentous day indeed, when one day shortly after he arrived in town, he set out from his parents’ home and hiked toward Bennett Peak. He wound his way to the mountain and coincidentally the 5,000 acres which surround its base. As he headed uphill he saw something appear ahead. It was a huge buck, coming down the trail into a clearing. Through the cold April mist, Brendan saw a second buck. And then third, a fourth, until finally there were fourteen which stood together almost like a welcoming party. The impression they made on Brendan, as they stood there still and majestic in the distance was lasting and permanent.

Spotlight on the Hutch - Continued In the years since 1981, Brendan has
become a bit of a legend on the steep Annadel slopes. He has spent literally hours studying the deer. He has watched them through his mind’s eye and his camera lens, as they herded, fought, foaled and died. His photography is indicative of the patience, training, experimentation, anticipation and confidence he brings to his craft. He does remember his novice days, when he literally tried to arrange the deer against what seemed to be suitable backdrops. This only resulted in many pictures of some very nervous-looking deer!
Brendan had run in a few charity-oriented running races back east. In fact, his very first race was a marathon. Yes, 26.2 miles, for which he went out and trained for two full days! Needless to say, at eighteen miles, he developed severe cramps in his jaw, which caused him to lope along with a very peculiar angle to his form. And as he was unfamiliar with running rules, he thought that walking during the race would cause him to be disqualified! So he kept running until the 22nd aid station which, unfortunately, had run out of Gatorade, which Brendan felt was energizing him over the miles. Soon after, he finally slowed down to a walk, while looking over his shoulder to make sure no race official saw him. Finally at mile 23, he hitched a ride in an official’s car back to the finish line.
After his move to Santa Rosa, Brendan started entering local, shorter races, and running developed into an important part of his life. He began racing so often, that his race miles often outnumbered his training miles. He has scored a fleet-of-foot 35:10 10K personal best and a speedy 2:44 at the marathon distance. Brendan often only averages 20 miles a week, as his forays into Annadel come first before all other activities. He helps out frequently at races, and has generously given many of his photographs away as awards.
Not only does Brendan maintain a pictorial accounting of his years in Annadel, he also keeps an on-going written diary. Even though he enjoys an unusual fellowship with the animals in the park, he respects the territorial needs of each individual animal. Never the less, he has stories recounting amazing moments of closeness – deer bedding down at his feet, newly born fawns running up to him as if he was their mother. One of Brendan’s favorite pals is a buck named Harry. Harry’s best friend was a deer named Big Ears. The two bucks usually hung out together, almost always within a few yards. Brendan later was to witness the almost human-like form of mourning Harry exhibited after Big Ears died. He went into a prolonged depression, his personality changed, and he spent most of his time with his head hanging, morosely disturbed. Eventually Harry hooked up with another younger buck, who Brendan felt wasn’t Harry’s “type”, but who looked almost exactly like Big Ears. (Heavens, I’ve known human relationships that have ended up the same way!)
Brendan studies the female deer as well and knows particularly well a group he calls “the Flower Girls,” Violet, Lily, Iris and Tulip. Lily is the mother, the others her daughters, and together with several young fawns, they herd together.
Brendan explained that young deer
usually live with the mother deer for at least a year or until the mother bears another fawn. Very rarely do deer stray far from their home territory, though they may wander for miles during mating season.
See Spotlight on the Hutch – Next Page
The Empire Runners Club | www.empirerunners.org | [email protected]
Spotlight on the Hutch - Continued Surprisingly enough, for all his wildlife
attachments, Brendan still enjoys hunting, and in Humboldt County he tracks deer, wild turkeys and wild boars. But he does acknowledge each year it is becoming harder and harder to squeeze the trigger when he has a deer in his sights. Brendan kills for the meat, and has decided that it is somehow more honest than buying meat in a store that someone else has killed. He still remembers raising three pigs on a farm once, and the day he drove them to town to be butchered. Brendan couldn’t sleep for several days afterward, because he felt so guilty after leading those trusting swine to their demise.
There still are many areas he would like to explore in California, and one day would like to spend some time in Montana, Wyoming and Alaska. “Hmmm,” I commented, “not very many ‘human’ animals in those parts!” Brendan answered that he does have a healthy respect for people, but just not in large quantities. He added that his single lifestyle, though for sure it has its drawbacks, does enable him to maintain his free-wheeling existence. His future may include an ultra one day, and even possibly publishing a wildlife photography book.
Brendan and I made a date for next spring, when he will take me to Annadel to meet Harry. Brendan is a special, gentle soul, one that could teach us all a great deal about the beauty and wonders existing just outside our door. I reflected on the differences in our two worlds, and realized how much I appreciated his. So I wish Harry and his cohorts a safe winter. Next spring may prove to be my chance, if only for a few hours, to glimpse the simple world and the sense of peace that is waiting to be discovered among the hills and trails of Annadel State Park.

SOB & Other Mountain Runs
(or how I spent my summer vacation)
By Bill Browne
Just a short bit on three out of area mountain runs I did this summer: In June I ran the Burton Creek trail run at Tahoe city. These races are part of the Big Blue trail race series at Tahoe. You should check it out. There are a series of trails, and cross country ski trails, just off Hwy 89 in Tahoe City. I ran the 7 miler but there was also a 3.5, half, full and 30 miler. This trail system is mostly rolling hills, single track and dirt roads, very scenic and runnable, pick your distance and enjoy the great scenery. These are well run races with great prizes.
Later in July my wife, Jeanne, and I did our annual trek up to Mt Ashland for the SOB (Siskiyou Out Back) 15k race on the Pacific Crest Trail. It was awesome as usual, but hard to fully enjoy the best scenery of any race I have done, due to the single track trail and waist high brush, in places along the trail on the side of the mountain. (6000 ft elev). There are some dirt roads as well. It has been hot last the last three years; hilly but not too bad, and very runnable. These are extremely well managed races (15k, 50k) and everyone just seems to be in a great mood, friendly and happy to be out running the trails. This has been my favorite race for a few years now and I highly recommend it to all you dirt and hill hounds out there. I got a cow bell for 2nd place this year, never thought it would happen, but had one of my best races and now I can die happy!
Last summer I was at a mountain race, back again at Tahoe - the North Star ski
resort, to be exact. There was just one hill! Not as well organized as SOB but still fun, sort of. This was supposed to be 6.4 miles on single track and road from the base of the ski lifts at 6200 ft to the top of the mountain (8400 ft). After the race everyone was looking at their watches and comparing notes and GPSs. It turned out to be 7.4 miles and the extra mile at that elevation nearly did me, and others, in. Enjoyed the lower first half, that had a lot of side-hill single track, but the second half was mostly steep ski-access dirt road, which I walked the last 1 1/2 or 2 miles! By the time I got to the top, I was done, and didn't care who passed me, I just wanted to be done, but knew I needed to conserve any energy that was left and keep on keepin’ on. Finally I jogged the last 1/2 mile downhill to the finish, got my free beer and rehydrated. As I said, they need another aid station (only two) and the elevation and heat and extra mileage, made it a little dicey. I decided not to do many more races above 6500’ or so elevation, as for me it was a little dangerous I think and I will always carry my own water on these races and try to pace better. (I still placed first in my division, so I did manage to salvage something a little positive out of a tough, tough day). This was another of the Big Blue adventure runs.

Time to bring back an Empire Runners Club tradition - the Christmas Relays.
The Christmas Relays is one of the oldest running events in the Bay Area. This year celebrates the 40th annual running.
As a member of the San Francisco Fire Department running club my participation in this event (1974) pre-dates by many years my becoming a member of the Empire Runners in 1996. The SFFD has had at least 1 team participated in every Relay.
I remember when the Relays were held on the Great Highway in San Francisco. As the popularity of this race grew its location was
moved to Lake Merced in San Francisco where it continues to thrive today. I have run event numerous times over my 50+ years of running and have had a blast every time. A must is getting into the spirit of the season by adding a Christmas theme to your running outfit. (See photos of our previous participation on our club photo page: 2010 & 2011)
Teams: 4 runners per team. Each team member completes a 4.464-mile lap around the lake.
It would be great to see the Empire Runners field a number of teams in the various divisions. Two years ago we chartered a bus and 40 of us (10 teams) took part and had a great time. It would be outstanding if we could put together 14 teams and fill the bus.
The Sunset Circle parking lot at the south end of Sunset Boulevard will serve as the rallying point for our bus and members. After a fun race we will gather, celebrate and enjoy the day with a little Christmas cheer with great food and drink. Potluck: bring something for yourself, your favorite beverage and something to share.
The 2013 race will be held on Sunday, December 15th. A great way to loosen up after running the Last 10K/Final 2-mile the day before. For more information about the race you can go to the registration website: http://www.allsportcentral.com/EventInfo.cfm?EventID=40491
Christmas Relays 2013 Get on the bus!
The Empire Runners Club | www.empirerunners.org | [email protected]
We will be chartering a 56-passenger bus for the trip to SF. This way we can all relax and just enjoy the company while having a great time.
If this is something you would be interested in I need to know ASAP. Putting the teams together, collecting payment and meeting the registration deadline needs to start right away. E-mail me at: [email protected] to reserve a seat.
TEAM CAPTAINS: Must register entire team during registration. Initial registration will be done using our club event registration system. Must be 4 person teams men or women. LIMIT TEAM NAME TO 20 CHARACTERS. We will take care of the actual race registration with the West Valley Track Club once we receive your team and payment.
Early entry fee for each team will be approximately: $120 with shirt and $72 without shirt if postmarked by December 5. Bus charter fee is estimated $20 each if we can put together 14 teams. The club may offer to offset some of the cost.. This is an Empire Runners Club members-only event. I will be giving more information with a complete cost break down after the next club meeting.
