The Lions Club of Caroline Springs &District is a small group of local residents
that volunteer their time and effort to enhance theCommunity of Caroline Springs and the surroundingDistricts. They selflessly strive to make a difference, locally through their own projects, Nationally throughLions Australia and globally contributing to LionsInternational projects.
We raise awareness and contribute funds to numerousCharities, Medical Research and Humanitarian causes.Closer to home we have completed a number of outdoorchild activity playgrounds in our Parks. March 2013 weheld our inaugural Truck show and family day raisingover $6500 for the Royal Childrenʼs Hospital GoodFriday Appeal. April 20th we participated in LionsInternationals “Worldʼs Biggest Barbeque” to raise fundsfor “The Childhood Cancer Research Foundation” theirvision is 100% survival for kids with cancer. To date 4.5million dollarsraised. There areBushfire, Flood,Natural Disasterrelief funds,Hearing Dogs,Assistance Dogs,Vision Restorationand the list goeson.
Believe it or not, a great deal of the funding for many ofthese projects comes from Lions running the humbleSausage Sizzle. Our BBQ trailer has cooked countlessthousands of sausages, onions &, pancakes. It hasserved other community groups in their own fundraisingefforts. Today we discover our beloved communityasset – The BBQ trailer has been stolen. Our membersare heavy hearted as we wonder how someone cansteal this wonderful community asset that means somuch more than its simple function would imply. Weponder the difference between those that steal andthose that give giving freelyof time and energy. LionsClub Will Continue doingwhat we do, undeterred bythe heartless, selfish act.Albeit without a BBQ for thetime being.

Living the good lifeMore and more, the reality of ʻretirementʼ in modernAustralia is changing.
Once again Baby Boomers – who introduced rock and roll andlanded on the moon – are playing by their own rules andredefining what it means to be retired.Traditionally, retirement was seen as a time to do less and less. These days, itʼs seen as a time to do more of the things youalways wanted to do but never had time for.
While the retirement age used to be around 65, today morepeople in their fifties are choosing to enjoy their life, their moneyand their freedom while they still can.
With an increasingly discerning demographic seeking the freedomto choose a lifestyle that fits their needs and preferences, retirement living choices have changed considerably in recentyears.
Facilities like indoor heated pools, spas, fully equipped gyms andbusiness centres are now a standard requirement for lots of
retirees, with many seeking retirement communities which enablethem to be as active and involved as they choose. And, you mightbe surprised, they are affordable.
Situated close to shops and amenities, Caesia Gardens hasretirement villas available with prices starting from $315,000.
The village features a range of first-class recreational facilitiesincluding an indoor swimming pool, bowling green, bocce court, business centre, games room and barbeque area.
Whatʼs more, thereʼs a great range of activities and events forresidents every week.
On Wednesday, May 22 Caesia Gardens is hosting a Taste ofCaroline Springs event – so why not attend and see firsthand whatvillage life is all about.
Caesia Gardens is one of Lend Leaseʼs vibrant retirementcommunities located in the heart of Caroline Springs. For moreinformation please call (03) 9092 3860.
The project aims to address problemgraffiti in the local community, increase community awareness aboutgraffiti prevention, reduce graffitivandalism, and improve visualamenity in the municipality.
As part of the initial stages of theproject, Council is holding acommunity forum on graffitimanagement. The forum will be held at:Hillside Community CentreRecreation ReserveRoyal Crescent, Hillside
Tuesday 7 May from 6pm.A light supper will be provided.
For further information and to RSVP,contact Council on 9747 7200 or [email protected] was successful in receivingfunding from the Department ofJustice to implement the project.
Tackling graffiti hot spotsMelton City Council is taking a community-based approach to tacklinggraffiti in the municipality through an innovative new project.
The Graffiti Hot Spots Project will initially be delivered at HillsideShopping Precinct and Recreation Reserve, with a second site to beidentified in Melton, and will encourage a place-based preventativeresponse to problem graffiti.

Arthritis in Autumn By Dr Bronwen Slack
Autumn is here and the days are gettingcolder, which can be a difficult time of yearfor our older pets, especially those sufferingfrom arthritis. Arthritis is caused by thedegeneration of the cartilage protecting thebones where they meet at the joints. Whenthe cartilage is worn away the exposedbones rub together causing pain. In winterthe joint fluid that helps protect the jointstends to become thick and the fats solidify, just like cooking fat solidifies in the pan whenit cools. So our older dogs and cats may findit especially difficult in winter to get up afterthey have been sleeping.
So how do you know if your dog hasarthritis? The signs of arthritis can be slow indeveloping and are often attributed to"slowing down with age". Many pets becomequiet and withdrawn with the chronic lowgrade pain associated with arthritis. You maynotice that your pet has difficulty getting upafter rest, is limping, is reluctant to move orplay, has a reduced appetite, hasbehavioural changes or is licking aroundjoints.
What can you do if your pet has arthritis?Well, there are many things that you can doat home to help make your pet more
comfortable. Make sure your petʼs sleepingarea is warm and draught free, preferablyinside the house. Provide thick padded, non-slip bedding and place the bedding on a flatsurface instead of a hammock bed. A nicewarm dog coat can provide extra warmth inwinter. Take your dog for a short gentle walkevery day, at their own pace, rather than along walk on the weekend that leaves themexhausted and painful.
You can also give your pet a gentle massageevery day. This is relaxing and calming andimproves the circulation to the painful areas.Heat packs are often well tolerated and canbe placed over sore muscles and joints torelieve tension and improve circulation.Weight loss is a very important part ofmanaging arthritis. Keep your pet at ahealthy weight to reduce the weight load onthe joints.
Here at Caroline Springs Veterinary Hospitalwe offer many options for treating pets witharthritis. We offer a course of injections ofPentosan Polysulphate. This drug inhibitscartilage breakdown, stimulates cartilageregrowth, improves the quality of joint fluid
and improves circulation to the joint. We alsooffer nutritional supplements that provide thebody with the ingredients needed to helprebuild cartilage in the joints. Glucosamineand chondroitin are the main ingredientsneeded to create new cartilage.
For especially painful cases we can providepain relief medication, after conducting a fullphysical examination and sometimes bloodtests to check that the animal will benefitfrom pain medication. We can provideacupuncture therapy, which can improvecirculation, relieve muscle tension andimprove mobility in arthritic pets.
Finally, we also offer a fantastic weightmanagement program that uses a computerprogram to calculate your petʼs ideal weightand their recommended daily food intake.
So please be especially vigilant this winterand watch out for any signs that your petmay be suffering from arthritis. CarolineSprings Veterinary Hospital is happy to helpyou with any questions that you may have, please call us on (03) 8390 2266. Ouropening hours are 8am – 8pm weekdaysand 9am-4pm on Saturdays.

Skin Cancer OverviewSkin cancer is the most common of all humancancers. Some form of skin cancer is diagnosed inmore than 1 million people in the United States eachyear. Cancer occurs when normal cells undergo atransformation during which they grow and multiplywithout normal controls.
Tumors overwhelm surrounding tissues by invadingtheir space and taking the oxygen and nutrients theyneed to survive and function.Skin cancers are of three major types: basal cellcarcinoma (BCC), squamous cell carcinoma (SCC),and melanoma.
The vast majority of skin cancers are BCCs or SCCs.While malignant, these are unlikely to spread to otherparts of the body. They may be locally disfiguring ifnot treated early. A small but significant number of skin cancers aremalignant melanomas. Malignant melanoma is ahighly aggressive cancer that tends to spread to otherparts of the body. These cancers may be fatal if nottreated early.
Like many cancers, skin cancers start asprecancerous lesions. These include sun damagedskin, certain kinds of moles (dysplastic moles).Skin Cancer Causes: The most important factor is UVSun Exposure , using the tanning booths, high doseof X ray radiation and some chemicals like arsenicand tar.
When to Seek Medical Care: Many people, especiallythose who have fair colouring or have had extensivesun exposure, should periodicallycheck their entire body for suggestivemoles and lesions. Have yourprimary health-care provider checkany moles or spots that concern you.See your health-care provider tocheck your skin if you notice anychanges in the size, shape, colour, ortexture of pigmented areas (such asdarker areas of skin or moles).

Jayka Academy of Music – Taking the Community by Storm
Hollywood glamourtouched down inCaroline Springswhen star of thestage and screenJessica Mauboyshared the mainstage with rising localtalents for theSummersault MusicFestival. CarolineSprings was abuzz, so much so that thestarlet took to Twitter to express herexcitement.
The Australian Idol startweeted, “Massive shoutout to Jayka Academyand all the students mayyou always follow yourheart and dream big."This message reachedher 100,000 Twitter fans.
Jayka Academy is a local music schooldedicated to nurturing talent in the Westernsuburbs. They were invited by Melton Councilto organise and run music workshopsthroughout the day. In addition to this, JaykaAcademy were asked to perform a main-stageextravaganza.
According to Jayka's founder, KarishmaSadhai, the Academy was established to bridgethe gap between the Melbourne musiccommunity and the young musicians ofCaroline Springs. The Summersault Festivalprovided a perfect platform to achieve that.
“Melbourne has one of the most diverse andexciting musical communities in the world. Thetalent in the Western Suburbs is a vital part ofthat. We started the Academy three years agoto help build bridges between the establishedscene of the inner city and the emerging artistsin our area. Our involvement in this festivalshows that this dream is starting to come truefor us” states Karishma.
“When a new talent gets to share a stage withsomeone like Jessica Mauboy, it gives them ataste of the excitement of performance, andhelps them realise what they are capable of.”
The students from Jayka were backed by a fulllive band to give them a taste of theprofessional musicianʼs life. Following this, localrising star Omar Dean, conducted a JaykaWorkshop. Omar is in the process of making hisway from YouTube sensation to real-life soulstar. “Omar Dean is just one example of theincredible talent that the Western Suburbs haveto offer” said Karishma.
The Students at Jayka are no strangers to thestage, having performed on the Main Stage atDjerriwarrh Festival 2011. They have alsoheadlined the local Carols by Candlelight,Summersault Festival and various charity andCommunity events such as Relay for Life andAusKick.
Kristy and Greg O'Toole have two girlsattending the Academy and have this tosay,"Our family has been a part of the JaykaAcademy of Music since the beginning. We'vewatched our girls not only grow in their vocalability but more importantly in their performancepresentation. They have had many 'gigs' thatwere certainly highlighted with the opportunityto sing on the same stage as Jessica Mauboyat Summersault this year!! Karishma and Joshare always welcoming and have really taken aninterest in our girls' individual needs, we are sohappy to be a part of the Jayka family and havemade some wonderful friends."
Jayka Academy will be hosting a series ofWorkshops featuring Omar Dean during Maywhere he will discuss and share hisexperiences of live Performance and Auditions. For information on the Workshops contact Joshon 0401974488 or Karishma on 0433999755.Jayka Academy will also be providing music forthe Tyler Fishlock Fundraiser. RICER stands for Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation, and Referral. It is the basictreatment applied to all musculoskeletal injuries such as ligament sprains, muscle strains, etc. Applying this basic principle immediately acts to relieve pain, limit swelling, and protect the injured tissue from further damage, and will mostdefinitely prevent complications such as scar tissue, deformity, disability, andrecurrence. So, how do you apply RICER?
RESTRest is a key component of repairing the body. Without rest, continual strain isplaced on the affected area, leading to increased inflammation, pain, and furtherinjury. The key point here is to rest the affected part; for example, if you injure ashoulder, it doesnʼt mean you cant get on a treadmill or exercise bike to maintainfitness! Too much rest may in fact cause further complications!
ICENEVER apply heat for a newly acquired injury…i.e, in the first 72 hours, youshould be using ice treatment. Same things goes if you have visible swelling thatfeels warm to touch. Ice works by minimising the spread of inflammation fromcells leaking fluid, reduces bleeding from broken capillaries, and reduces nerveactivity to minimise pain sensation. Place a cold pack wrapped in a chuxsuperwipe or thin towel for 10-15 minutes 3-4 times daily. Never apply ice directlyon your skin as this will cause ice burns!
COMPRESSIONCompression helps with the swelling. Although some swelling is inevitable, toomuch swelling results in significant loss of function, excessive pain and eventualslowing of blood flow through vessel restriction. Apply an elastic bandage, covering the injured area as well as the areas above and below to reduce thespread of bleeding and swelling. You know youʼve applied it too tight if the areabecomes numb.
ELEVATIONElevation uses gravity to help drain away all that excess fluid and waste product(even if you cant see it), and sends it back towards your heart to be “cleaned”.
REFERRALAlways see your GP or physio for advice on musculoskeletal injuries – big orsmall. In the first 72 hours, it may be important to be on medication to helpreduce swelling (e.g, anti-inflammatories) and pain, as well as making sure youhavenʼt injured it worse than you think (eg fracture). After that, itʼs important toreturn the affected area to 100%. If you donʼt get it treated properly, sure, it mayget better on its own, but usually, scar tissue forms in the affected area, whichleads to restriction in movement, muscle function loss, and the area becomesprone to injury again. Ever had that sprained ankle, which got better, but youseem to always roll the ankle again again?

Community UpdateHello Readers,
Welcome to all our new and regularreaders for another edition of theCaroline Springs Community Update.
Last month I spoke of a number ofroad safety campaigns that would runduring the Easter break. Even withwarning and advertising of thesecampaigns there was still an alarmingnumber of motoristʼs detectedbreaking the law. The use of mobilephones, failure to wear seat belts andspeed were all offences thatcontributed to the success of thecampaign. In respect to the NationalOperation “Crossroads”, speed andfatigue on our roads is still contributingto our nationʼs road toll and the lastingeffect of serious injury.
This month I would like to discuss theLOOK LOCK LEAVE campaign. Aftera lengthy meeting with the membersfrom our local intelligence unit I havebeen asked to again raise the issue ofmotor vehicle security. Ourintelligence is showing a substantialspike in theft from vehicles. This isanything from loose change, sunglasses, mobile phones, handbags, GPS and power tools toname just a few.
It appears that the message ofsecuring items when parked at a trainstation or shopping centre is starting tobe adhered to but drivers are notfollowing these same securityguidelines when parking their car intheir own driveway, picking children upfrom school or visiting a friend. A large percentage of thefts areoccurring on unlocked vehicles where
handbags are simply left on the frontseat whilst the owner goes inside forjust a short time.
If you need to leave your car for anyperiod of time it should be locked, windows wound up and all items ofinterest removed from visibility. Thismay seem time consuming but if theseitems are stolen, far greater time will bespent on contacting Police, InsuranceCompanies and replacing any of theseitems.
Even if your vehicle is housed in agarage overnight please do not leavethe keys in the ignition, vehicle unlockedor valuables lying around. Whilst thismay sound like common sense ourintelligence indicates that these crimesare on the increase.
Further to this number plates are stillbeing stolen at an alarming rate. Aneasy step of replacing number platescrews with security or one way screwscan be a very simple and quick measurethat can result in fewer plates beingstolen or removed. These screws canbe obtained from your local PoliceStation or look out for regular “SafePlate” operations in the local area.
LOOK - around and in your carLOCK - everything away
LEAVE - car secure
If you see someone acting suspicious orloitering around please consider calling“000” or making a report to CrimeStoppers on 1800 333 000.Crimestoppers will also take all reportsof hoon drivers.
A reminder to all readers that ifanybody needs to report a matterurgently to the Police then they shouldbe calling “000”. Contacting the stationdirectly or sending an e-mail is notappropriate. Phone/e-mail messagesshould NOT be left for the reporting ofcrime.
If for any reason you may need toattend the Caroline Springs PoliceStation, please be aware that the frontcounter will open for some additionalhours as staff permits. When possiblethe counter will be open from 8.00amto 6.00pm. This will NOT be every daybut as staffing allows. If you need tovisit outside 9.00am – 5.00pm, pleasecall first.
Before I go I am happy to hear fromanyone in the community about asafety or policing issue they haveexperienced.
If there is an issue you would like todiscuss with me or explain in futureupdates please email me direct [email protected] alternatively feel free to call me on9361-4700.
Remember to take care of each otherand donʼt forget that community safetyis everyoneʼs responsibility.
Thanks for reading.
