WATERHULPPROJEK: GOODWOOD SPRING MET MENING IN
Harte enkrane oopvir boere
p
“As ons vanaand dié water op ’n trok laai, sal daar môre weer soveel in hierdie stoor staan.
BRENDEN RUITER EN MAGRIET THERON@ruitervaniewind
Emosioneel“Goodwood se mense het so mooi byme-
kaar gekom om te help. Daar was so baiemense wat Saterdag emosioneel was toe aldie water afgelaai is.
moet.
Goodwood reeds 7 000 liter water ingesamel.
BrandweerDie Milnerton-brandweer was Saterdag

kennis opgeslurp wat ek kon kry.“My tannie, wat my skoolgeld betaal, is
Kenneth Africa, Kaylinn se pa, sê hullehet vroeg reeds geweet hy is ’n begaafdekind.

“My vroukook nie, so ek en Albert vat voor.

The Edgemead ChristmasMarket raisedmore than R20 000 in December for theanimal organisation called the Lucky
Lucy Foundation.Themoneywas handed over to the owners
of the farm where sick animals are rehabili-tated and housed. It was raised with a raffle, which is held each year as part of theEdgemead Christmas Market. The aim is tohelp raise money for a needy organisationand to create exposure for them. This year’s raffle prize included two tick-
ets to the JoshGroban concert at GrandWeston 13 April and a special gift hamper, allworth R3 200. Lesley West from Milnertonwon the raffle.AlexandraWaltman from Lucky Lucy has
confirmed that the money will be used tohelp complete their “cat garden” project.According toWaltmanLuckyLucyhas ap-
proximately 180 cats about 30 of whom arefree roaming feral cats to keep the rodentpopulation down and protect the food stores. They are all tested, sterilised, vaccinatedand microchipped.“We are busy with a cat garden and will
be fencing off the existing catteryies and re-leasing about 40 additional semi-feral and fe-
ral cats who currently reside within the cat-teries.The garden will be 160m in diameter and
the fence will have a 90 degree angle at thetop to keep the cats in.“The garden will have lawn, trees, shrubs
and herbs as well as tables and chairs withplenty of hiding spaces for shy cats. We arefortunate to have a landscaper volunteer forus and she is designing the garden and willbring her team to do the layout, preparationand planting,” says Waltman. The garden will have a remembrance sec-
tion to honour each of the Lucky Lucy catswho passed away.“This garden will be a little paradise for
the ones who will never be lucky enough tofind their own families – we will thereforebe their forever family.“We also have a special Kitty Throne do-
nated for our cats which was placed so thatour cats can have their own lookout pointover the entire farm. We will release thesecats once our fence and entrance gates arecomplete andwe are very excited at how ourCat Garden is currently progressing andcannot wait to see how happy our cats willbe,” Altman.

The additional interventions to helphomeless people over the festive sea-son will run until the end of January.
The City of Cape Town’s street people re-integration unit will work closely with cen-tral improvement districts and other orga-nisations to reduce the number of peoplemoving to the streets, as well as antisocialbehaviour such as aggres-sive begging. The project will focus on
the city centre, Bellville,Parow, Green Point andMuizenberg, with the aimof reducing the number ofpeople living on the streetthrough targeted interven-tions like screening people, distributing informationabout City programmesand resources, referrals tosocial and health servicesand reintegration withtheir families.
More street peopleIt follows a pilot project
in the city centre in Decem-ber 2014, which also sig-nalled the launch of theCity’s reintegration unit. The initial deployment focused on a num-ber of areas such as Greenmarket Square,StGeorge’sMall, Long Street and theGrandParade. The team identified a number ofchallenges, including many street peopleand beggars caught in the grip of substanceabuse, street people selling donated food tolocal vendors for cash, an unwillingness toaccept help and members of the public whoare unaware of the City’s “give responsi-bly” campaign, says Suzette Little, mayoral
committee member for social developmentand early childhood development.“Wehave daily interventions aimed at as-
sisting street people, but the festive seasondoes see an increase in people migrating tothe streets –whether for potential economicgain or because of family and other socialreasons. As with any other city, we’re
caught in the unenviableposition of managing therights of street people andthose of the rest of the popu-lation. Street people can-not, and should not, bemar-ginalised, butnor canwe ig-nore the daily complaintsfrom across the city aboutthe impact street peoplehave on the lives of others,”she says.
Handouts a huge problemThe reintegrationunit fa-
cilitated a return home for85 people in its first threemonths of operation.“We also have a number
of preventative pro-grammes that are beingrun in communities to pre-vent more people from end-
ing up on the streets. It is hard work, be-cause all our interventions are voluntary. We cannot force anyone to accept our assist-ance. Some prefer the lure of the streets be-cause they don’t have to account to anyone, but also because it is profitable thanks todaily hand-outs.“I reallywish the public could begin to ap-
preciate how damaging the street cornerhand-outs are to our efforts and also thelives of the recipients,” Little says.

I’m so glad we now have a“grand plan” for traffic, whatever it might be, but itwould be much simpler, quicker and cheaper to se-quence traffic lights properly.
Well functioning, sequencedtraffic lights are found over theworld, set so that drivers don’tneed to stop and start all thetime.
Other good traffic flow toolsare applied to avoid clogging ofroads as much as possible. It’snot only very frustratinggetting every robot on red, irrespective of what speed youdrive; it wastes fuel and coststhe motorist and the countryexcessive amounts of money.
The latest harassment thatmotorists experience in theCity centre at intersections arethose ‘green men’ appearingafter every second lightchange. Not only do pedestri-ans not care what colour thelight is; they cross when itsuits them, but after hourscars have to wait at the redtraffic light like idiots waitingfor non-existing pedestrians toturn up. It’s a hindrance to thetraffic flow, but then propertraffic flow has never been inour traffic management’svocabulary.
Traffic management will ofcourse say it’s not possible or‘not so easy’ to sequence trafficlights, yet it seems to me thatthey are often sequenced onred just to frustrate themotorist, as no other explana-tion comes to mind. To se-quence traffic lights along anyroad with current computerisa-tion should be no problem atall – not when we are sendingpeople into space and satellitesto Mars. It’s more a case ofeducating our traffic manage-ment in up-to-date technologyand implementing such, notletting the motorist suffer, what often seems to be onpurpose, to make our lives onthe road as difficult as possi-ble.

On Sunday 27 December at18:20, a grey Hyundai with aCY plate parked in the disabledparking bay at the entrance tothe Tyger Valley Virgin Active.
A perfectly able-bodiedwoman wearing smart officeattire emerged, walked into thegym, swiped her card, left andgot into her car, and drove off.
This is exactly the attitudethat our reprobate “president”has – “if I can get away with it,I will!”
Firstly, you are perfectlyable-bodied! You have no rightto park even momentarily in aparking bay dedicated to thosewho are disabled. In addition, itis fraudulent to swipe yourcard to obtain the trainingpoints if you do not actually getyour butt into the gym andtrain! The gym is an accessoryto this fraud by allowing peoplewho are clearly not dressed totrain to simply swipe and leave.
We as honest citizens (thefew of us that exist) must standup against this. It is because ofthis attitude that our countryand our society are in such ashocking state!

LEWENSKIEKIE
Social racism:time to startreconsideringThe last few weeks of comments sharedon social media have shown us thatracism is still alive and well in SouthAfrica.
While some may claim that racialtensions are a complex problem made upof skewed history books, cultural differ-ence, class systems and generations ofindoctrination, none of these pointsprovide any reason to treat anotherhuman being with disrespect.
Science has shown us that on average, humans share 90% of their DNA withother humans with only 10% distinguish-ing one population or race from theother. Archaeologists have shown us thatbroadly speaking, we all share the sameancestors. At our very core, we are allmade up the same. In fact, pigmentationis merely the result of humanity’sadaptability and the body’s response toultraviolet radiation.
Further investigation shows that darkercomplexions were developed in thetropics, closer to the equator, where thereis more need for protection from harmfulsun rays. Why then, would this be anyreason to treat anyone any differently?Others say that racial belief structureshave been passed on through generationsand would be impossible to change.
Cognitive psychology however hasshown us that with a little work, it isindeed possible to change thoughtpatterns. Perhaps it is time to startreconsidering the way we see the world, and to start changing our thoughtpatterns accordingly?

“Through our research over the years, one message that has been consistentfrom our customers is that their chil-dren’s education takes priority,” ex-plains Nobesuthu Tom, Pep’s marketingdirector. “They will often compromise onother things to pay for school fees, trans-port to school as well as school-wear andstationery.”

PROMOTION
The employment outlook for most of themore than 800 000 learnerswho finishedmat-ric last year is grim. Labour analysts predictthat more than 500 000 matriculants will notbe able to find employment in the formal la-bour sector. But it is not all doom and gloom.
The CEO of the National Tooling InitiativeProgramme (NTIP), Dirk van Dyk, has an-nounced that the NTIP is now offering studyopportunities for students interested in a ca-reer in manufacturing. Studies are free forqualifying students who study tool, die andmould making as part of the NTIP’s TDMPowered Skills Development Foundation Pro-gramme. The programmes are presented atthe Wingfield campus of Northlink TVET inGoodwood and the Western Cape ToolingCentre of Excellence in Parow.
Van Dyk says the training of sufficientskilled people for the tooling industry is ofcritical importance as manufacturing is oneof the cornerstones of a South African econo-my that faces serious growth challenges.
“SouthAfrica needs to build its toolingman-ufacturing capacity to become globally morecompetitive if the country wants to createmore jobs. The TDM Powered Skills Develop-ment Programme plays a pivotal role in pro-viding sufficient skilled people to the aero-space, automotive, chemical, electronics, lei-sure, marine, medical, mining and packagingindustries,” says Van Dyk.
The learning content of the programme isstructured to include fundamental and ap-plied theory, trade theory, workshop practicaltraining and on-the-job training, providingstudents with extensive industry exposureand experience.
The 2016 intake is sponsored by the depart-ment of trade and industry.
